Upwelling In The Humboldt Coastal Current Near Valparaiso, Chile, Donald R. Johnson, Thomas Fonseca, Helmuth Sievers

In December, 1975, an upwelling study was conducted at Punta Curaumilla near Valparaiso, Chile. Previous work (Silva, 1973) had indicated a zone of relatively intense upwelling around this point of land. In the present study , a bathythermograph survey confirmed the presence of the intensification, identified as a tongue of cool water extending seaward and equatorward of the point. Following Arthur's (1965) scale analysis it is suggested that the acceleration of relative vorticity past the point of land is responsible for intensification....

Bioerosion can be important to the configuration and destruction of coral reefs. Echinoids as grazers and burrowers can contribute significantly to coral reef erosion. The effects of critical level absorption of oceanic internal waves by a mean flow are estimated using the Garrett and Munk (1975) model spectrum. The horizontal currents of the wave field are found to be more intense perpendicular to the mean flow than parallel to it. The cause of this anisotropy is preferential absorption of waves travelling with the mean flow. However, the current anisotropy is only half as large as would be necessary to explain Frankignoul's (1974) observations....

A sensitive electrode system has been built for measuring in situ sea-surface potenti als from a mobile platform. The areal and vertical distribution of iodine, bromine and organic carbon has been examined in a suite of sediment cores from the Panama Basin. Both halogens are approximately correlative with organic carbon in surface sediments. The results of five field seasons of work on the Siwalik sediments of Northern Pakistan have greatly expanded our knowledge of these Miocene sediments and their vertebrate faunas. We have measured six long stratigraphic sections on the north limb of the Soan synclinorium near the town of Khaur. These columns, the longest of which is over 3,000 meters, provide the stratigraphic framework for our paleontological studies and give a detailed description of the lithological sequences in the Khaur region. We have concluded that the formational units of previous workers are poorly defined and of little practical value for biostratigraphy or …

Recovery of three new partial skulls of Palatobaena bairdi from the latest Cretaceous (Lancian) and middle Paleocene (Torrejonian) of Montana and from the early Paleocene of Colorado adds greatly to the knowledge of this peculiar baenid turtle. Although there is some variation in the temporal emargination, Palatobaena primitively appears to have had a deep emargination as seen in eubaenines. The wide triturating surfaces align Palatobaena with the Eubaeninae. A skull of a new species found in the Wasatch Formation (Wasatchian), Wyoming, belongs to this genus and extends the record of Palatobaena into the early Eocene. The new species has a …

A New Aquatic Eosuchian From The Newark Supergroup (Late Triassic) Of North Carolina And Virginia, Paul Eric Olsen

Tanytrachelos ahynis (n.gen., n. sp.) is a lepidosaur from the Late Triassic Dan River Group (Newark Supergroup) of North Carolina and Virginia. The new reptile has gracile proportions similar to Tanystropheus (Middle Triassic) and is referred to the family Tanystropheidae of the suborder Prolacertiformes. Unlike Tanystropheus, Tanytrachelos has relatively short cervical vertebrae bearing splintlike ribs anteriorly and plowshare-shaped ribs posteriorly. The species is much smaller than Tanystropheus and has long straight ribs fused to the most distal dorsal vertebrae and proximal caudal vertebrae. The associated fish and nonmarine invertebrate fauna and flora suggest that the age of the Tanytrachelos-beanng horizon …

Identification of specific environments of deposition represented by black shales has been a traditional puzzle for geologists. The present study was undertaken to see whether sedimentary structures, especially biogenic structures, could be used to subdivide the inclusive term "black shale facies." Because of the prevalence of infauna, modern marine muds are typically bioturbate; only where animal life has been excluded, usually by oxygen deficiency, is the depositional lamination preserved. Fine laminae are characteristic of anoxic water in all modern seas and oceans. Two ancient black shale sequences were investigated; one, in the Upper Devonian Sonyea Group of New York, provided …
