Temporal Variations In Diatom Abundance Off Southern California In Relation To Surface Temperature, Air Temperature And Sea Level, Sargun A. Tont

Temporal variations in diatom abundance off the southern California coast during the 1920- 1939 period can be explained by a combination of the changes in the circulation patterns of major water masses and variations associated with upwelling events. Monthly, tri-monthly, seasonal and yearly anomalies of diatom abundances have significant negative correlation with the anomalies of sea surface temperature, air temperature and sea level.

Phytoplankton distributions in Long Island and Block Island Sounds measured during a 1978 fall equinox cruise are interpreted in terms of tidal mixing variations and water column stratification. A stratification depth-scaled-by-light diagram is used to quantify the preferred physical environments of the two major morphological groups (diatoms and microflagellates). The success of the method in clearly distinguishing these physical regimes suggests its value as a useful biological growth index in estuarine systems.

Nitrifying bacteria (ammonia- and nitrite-oxidizers) were isolated from sea-surface films collected in the Gulf of California. Laboratory studies indicate substrate oxidation by these isolates is inhibited by light. Ammonia-oxidizers showed lower nitrifying activity and a longer lag time when held in an 8-hr light:16-hr dark regime compared to those held completely in the dark, and nitrite-oxidizers showed nitrifying activity only when held in the dark. Tracer studies using 15N-ammonia corroborate that little or no nitrification occurs in the surface films of subtropical seas.

A Geologic And Biostratigraphic Framework For Miocene Sediments Near Khaur Village, Northern Pakistan, John C. Barry, Anna K. Behrensmeyer, Marc Monaghan

A litho- and chronostratigraphic framework for approximately 3500 m of late Miocene sedimentary deposits with lateral exposure of 30-40 km is now well established for Siwalik deposits in the vicinity of Khaur Village, northern Pakistan. Based on paleomagnetic reversal stratigraphy and the constraints of long range faunal correlations, the time spanned is between 15-12 and 6 my BP. Boundaries of the major lithostratigraphic units are time-transgressive with respect to a paleomagnetic isochron traced laterally for 20-30 km. With reference to this datum, the zone of interfingering of the Dhok Pathan and Nagri Formations moves upward through approximately 1.5 my from …
