Sclerosis-Associated Follicular Center Cell Lymphoma In The Retroperitoneum : The First Clinicopathologicla Study Of A Frequently Encountered Subtype Of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, Michael Ethan Katz

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Follicular center cell lymphoma with sclerosis is a significant clinicopathologic entity which has received little attention to date. Its uniqueness has been obscured by quarrels over classification of the non-Hodgkin's lymphomas; and by the reluctance of some to accept it as a bona fide pathologic subtype in the retroperitoneum, its most common site of presentation. This thesis examines the clinical and pathological findings in a series of 22 cases of retroperitoneal follicular center cell lymphoma with sclerosis obtained from the hematopathology files of Yale-New Haven Hospital. Background material on the immunobiology, classification, and staging of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas is provided; and …

The Relationships Of The Yellow-Breasted Chat (Icteria Virens) And The Alleged Slowdown In The Rate Of Macromolecular Evolution In Birds, Charles G. Sibley, Jon E. Ahlquist Feb 1982

The Relationships Of The Yellow-Breasted Chat (Icteria Virens) And The Alleged Slowdown In The Rate Of Macromolecular Evolution In Birds, Charles G. Sibley, Jon E. Ahlquist

Postilla

The taxonomic relationships of the Yellow-breasted Chat (Icteria virens) have been uncertain since its discovery more than 200 years ago. Although usually considered to be a New World wood warbler (Parulini) it possesses structural and behavioral characteristics that seem aberrant in comparison with the typical members of that group. The relationships of Icteria were investigated by comparing its single-copy DNA sequences with those of other New World nine-primaried oscines and representatives of other oscine families, using the technique of DNA-DNA hybridization. The data indicate that Icteria is a paruline warbler and it should continue to be included within that group. …

Equatorial Current Measurements, I. Moored Observations, James R. Luyten Jan 1982

Equatorial Current Measurements, I. Moored Observations, James R. Luyten

Journal of Marine Research

The low frequency fluctuations in the western Indian Ocean are dominated by energetic variability with relatively small horizontal and vertical scales. The time series of horizontal current and temperature exhibit a number of energetic events which, for the most part, are not sufficiently resolved to assign a spatial scale to the underlying process....

On The Movements Of Deep Mesoscale Eddies In The North Atlantic, Doron Nof Jan 1982

On The Movements Of Deep Mesoscale Eddies In The North Atlantic, Doron Nof

Journal of Marine Research

A simplified three layer model is considered in order to examine the movements of deep mesoscale eddies such as the isolated Mediterranean eddies observed off the Bahamas. These anticyclonic eddies are found in the permanent thermocline more than 6000 km away from their parent water mass and are characterized by a lens-like cross section....

Temporal And Spatial Patterns Of Monsoonal Upwelling Along Arabia: A Modem Analogue For The Interpretation Of Quaternary Sst Anomalies, Warren L. Prell Jan 1982

Temporal And Spatial Patterns Of Monsoonal Upwelling Along Arabia: A Modem Analogue For The Interpretation Of Quaternary Sst Anomalies, Warren L. Prell

Journal of Marine Research

Several lines of evidence suggest that monsoonal circulation and its associated upwelling in the Arabian Sea have experienced significant fluctuations during the past 105 years. To construct an analogue model to interpret such changes, we have used the monthly average sea-surface temperature (SST) data from Hastenrath and Lamb (1979) to define the temporal and spatial pattern of upwelling along Arabia....

Perspectives Of Research On Detritus: Do Factors Controlling The Availability Of Detritus To Macroconsumers Depend On Its Source?, K. R. Tenore, L. Cammen, S. E.G. Findlay, N. Phillips Jan 1982

Perspectives Of Research On Detritus: Do Factors Controlling The Availability Of Detritus To Macroconsumers Depend On Its Source?, K. R. Tenore, L. Cammen, S. E.G. Findlay, N. Phillips

Journal of Marine Research

Various factors have been suggested as regulating the availability of detritus to detritivores, e.g., particle-size and microbial dynamics, nutritional composition of detritus per se, and chemical inhibitors/ enhancers. These factors might vary in importance depending on detritus source: fecal pellets, vascular plants, or seaweed-derived detritus. We review the literature to evaluate the above factors and suggest that future research on detritus should consider regulatory mechanisms which depend on detritus type.

Daily Patterns Of Fluorescence In Vivo In The Central Equatorial Pacific, Patrick J. Setser, Norman L. Guinasso Jr., David R. Schink Jan 1982

Daily Patterns Of Fluorescence In Vivo In The Central Equatorial Pacific, Patrick J. Setser, Norman L. Guinasso Jr., David R. Schink

Journal of Marine Research

A daily cycle of fluorescence in vivo was strikingly apparent in surface waters of the central equatorial Pacific between latitudes 4N and 10S, but not in waters to the north or south of this zone. These changes in fluorescence did not represent changes in chlorophyll-a concentration, but rather a photoinhibition of fluorescence by ambient light. Higher nutrient and chlorophyll-a concentrations were found in the region where cycling occurred....

On The Interaction Between Surface Waves And Undulations On The Seabed, A. G. Davies Jan 1982

On The Interaction Between Surface Waves And Undulations On The Seabed, A. G. Davies

Journal of Marine Research

When surface water waves propagate over undulating seabed topography, the resulting interaction creates a near-bed velocity field which has important implications for sediment transport. Linear perturbation theory is used here to examine this interaction for the case of two-dimensional oscillatory uniplanar nonseparating flow, in which the surface wave crests are parallel to the crests of the bottom undulations....

Three-Dimensional Modeling Of Tracers In The Deep Pacific Ocean Ii. Radiocarbon And The Circulation, Manuel E. Fiadeiro Jan 1982

Three-Dimensional Modeling Of Tracers In The Deep Pacific Ocean Ii. Radiocarbon And The Circulation, Manuel E. Fiadeiro

Journal of Marine Research

The radiocarbon data from the GEOSECS Pacific expedition was used to test the abyssal circulation model presented in part I of this series. The results show that a uniform increase of the upwelling rate from the bottom to the top of the model cannot explain the qualitative features of the radiocarbon distribution....

A Theory Of The Wind-Driven Circulation Ii. Gyres With Western Boundary Layers, William R. Young, Peter B. Rhines Jan 1982

A Theory Of The Wind-Driven Circulation Ii. Gyres With Western Boundary Layers, William R. Young, Peter B. Rhines

Journal of Marine Research

The quasigeostrophic, wind-driven circulation theory given by Rhines and Young (1982b) is extended in two directions. First, we consider forcing patterns which are not contrived so as to close without a western boundary layer. The resulting barotropic circulation pattern (see Fig. 1) has the well known east-west asymmetry produced by the β-effect....

A Topographically Controlled Upwelling Center Off Southern Vancouver Island, Howard J. Freeland, Kenneth L. Denman Jan 1982

A Topographically Controlled Upwelling Center Off Southern Vancouver Island, Howard J. Freeland, Kenneth L. Denman

Journal of Marine Research

From January 1979 to June 1981 an oceanographic experiment off the west coast of Canada provided a unique view of a large annual upwelling event. The upwelling is driven by an interaction between the large scale coastal current systems and a narrow canyon that cuts the continental shelf. This interaction allows water to be raised from depths much greater than those normally expected from the classical wind-driven upwelling mechanisms....
