Exposure to environmental pollutants can have serious consequences for mental health and well-being, leading to widespread societal impacts. With climate change leading to more frequent and severe wildfires, it is increasingly important to understand the impacts of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) from wildfire smoke, a harmful air pollutant that has been shown to impact cognitive health. Burgeoning research has focused on the impact of ambient PM2.5 on mental and neurological health, but little has focused specifically on wildfire smoke PM2.5. The social vulnerability index (SVI) measure was developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to characterize a community’s vulnerability level. Recently, SVI has been used to predict risk of COVID-19, in order to understand which communities may be most vulnerable. This analysis aims to understand what factors are driving the relationship between census tract-level vulnerability and risk of hospitalization with a viral respiratory pathogen. A statistical analysis and modeling study of surveillance data was conducted, analyzing the incidence of hospitalization with influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and COVID-19, by census tract, in two counties in Connecticut between 2018–2021. …

Gonorrhea infection is caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae and it is the second most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection around the globe. Although gonorrhea infection is treatable with antibiotics, the level of antimicrobial resistance continues to increase and has become a major public health concern. Improving residential building efficiency and transitioning from fossil fuels for climate alignment has been a primary focus in climate change mitigation efforts. Energy efficiency is usually achieved through tightening buildings by sealing gaps that allow conditioned air to pass through. However, early research highlighted the potential for more efficient buildings to also limit the supply of outdoor air, leading to increased indoor concentrations of various air pollutants. Tightening buildings for efficiency must therefore be accompanied by supplemental ventilation to preserve indoor air quality. We aimed to study the effects of cannabidiol (CBD) in out-patients with early psychosis on clinical metrics of psychosis and cognition and on psychophysiological electroencephalogram (EEG) metrics of psychosis. Adult outpatient subjects with a primary psychotic disorder within approximately five years of psychosis onset were enrolled in a four-week, two-period, randomized, placebo-controlled crossover trial (clinicaltrials.gov NCT02504151). Subjects were randomized in a one-to-one ratio to receive either CBD (oral 800 mg/day) or placebo in the first of two treatment periods in a randomized, double-blind manner. Introduction: In the United States, Asian American/Pacific Islander (AAPI) people, and in particular AAPI immigrants, utilize mental health services at consistently lower rates than other ethnic populations, even when adjusting for perceived need or actual diagnoses. Methods: This study used data from the restricted version of the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions Wave III (NESARC-III) to compare Immigrant AAPIs, U.S. born AAPIs and U.S. born non-Hispanic Whites on mental health service utilization rates as well as examine differences in sociodemographic, behavioral, and psychiatric/substance use disorder (SUD) diagnostic characteristics that may account for these differences. Almajirai are male children who leave the care of their parents to learn the Qur’an and study Islam under the tutelage of a Mallam or Imam at a Tsangaya. Almajiranci refers to the system of education based on this relationship between almajiri and mallam, and which was the dominant mode of education in precolonial Hausaland – Northern Nigeria and Southern Niger. This system remains widespread and popular in both countries. Individuals living with mental illness have significantly reduced physical health compared to the general population, leading to a significantly decreased life expectancy. Physical activity has been shown to be an effective strategy to address many of the conditions contributing to this disparity. However, many people with mental illness do not meet the recommended levels of daily physical activity. Peer support has been shown to be effective in some aspects of recovery for individuals living with mental illness, but its effectiveness in increasing engagement with physical activity in that population is not well established. The estimated prevalence of learning disabilities (LDs) is nearly 8% of all children. Yet fewer than 5% of all children are diagnosed in public schools — jeopardizing remediation. The specific aims of this study were as follows: 1) To perform a qualitative study involving individual interviews with front-line child-facing professionals to identify barriers to detecting school-aged children with LDs and 2) To utilize results to suggest improvements to pediatric clinical care, as pediatricians are often initial responders for families when children experience academic difficulties.
