Tucked In: Weighted Blankets To Improve Sleep In Intensive Care Unit Patients, Jaime Conway Apr 2021

Tucked In: Weighted Blankets To Improve Sleep In Intensive Care Unit Patients, Jaime Conway

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Sleep deprivation is ubiquitous in hospital settings and deleterious to patients’ health. Specifically, sleep deprivation has been reported to play a role in multiorgan dysfunction, leads to poor critical illness outcomes, and can be considered a risk factor for delirium, a highly prevalent disease in intensive care units with even greater implications. To date, there are no evidence-based pharmacological interventions for sleep deprivation, and have even resulted in more adverse effects. However, non-pharmacological solutions have had limited efficacy, displaying a need for novel therapeutic options. In this randomized control trial, we will investigate and compare mean lengths of total sleep …

Culturally-Adapted Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Bilingual Latinx With Depressive Symptoms, Leanne Gonzalez Apr 2021

Culturally-Adapted Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Bilingual Latinx With Depressive Symptoms, Leanne Gonzalez

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

The prevalence of depression is particularly high in the Latinx population, and this population is associated with lower rates of depression diagnosis and treatment. One intervention that has shown to be effective in treating mild to moderate depression is cognitive behavioral therapy. Though the effects of culturally adapted therapy, language being the most common adaptation, have been studied, the difference in outcomes for bilingual, bicultural speakers has not been examined. In this randomized control trial, we will compare the effectiveness of Spanish language cognitive behavioral therapy to that of English language therapy in bilingual, foreign-born, Latinx patients with depressive symptoms. …

Training Pediatricians To Support Families Of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, And Queer Youth, Siena Tice Apr 2021

Training Pediatricians To Support Families Of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, And Queer Youth, Siena Tice

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer youth have an increased risk of mental health disorders. Family support of the child’s sexual orientation or gender identity can mitigate this increased risk when families are provided the proper tools. Pediatricians have the potential to strengthen the parent/child relationship, but few pediatricians receive training in how to guide parents appropriately and accurately. In this randomized controlled trial, we test whether receiving the Family Acceptance Project training increases pediatricians’ self-efficacy in engaging parents to support their lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer child. We will utilize a waitlist control arm to examine the change …

Entangled Revolutions: Cuba, Nicaragua, And The United States In The Cold War Caribbean, 1979-1990, Emily Snyder Apr 2021

Entangled Revolutions: Cuba, Nicaragua, And The United States In The Cold War Caribbean, 1979-1990, Emily Snyder

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

“Entangled Revolutions” examines Cuba and Nicaragua’s revolutionary relationship with a sustained lens on institutions, ideology, gender, and local and international frames. My analysis first demonstrates how each revolution’s relationship with the other demanded, and produced, profound domestic and international effects. Nicaragua relied on Cuba for material support and technical expertise; Cuba looked to Nicaragua as a source of revolutionary radicalization. The United States crafted public diplomacy campaigns alongside the Contra insurgency in Nicaragua as it attempted to prevent “another Cuba.” Second, Cuban and Nicaraguan experiences of collaboration were heavily gendered. Though both revolutionary states sought to impose gendered logics on …

Fraternité, Liberté, Égalité: Sophie De Grouchy, Moral Republicanism, And The History Of Liberalism, 1785-1815, Kathleen Theodora Mccrudden Apr 2021

Fraternité, Liberté, Égalité: Sophie De Grouchy, Moral Republicanism, And The History Of Liberalism, 1785-1815, Kathleen Theodora Mccrudden

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This thesis explores the political thought and activities of Sophie de Grouchy (1763-1822), author of Letters on Sympathy (1798) and wife of the philosophe and French Revolutionary the marquis de Condorcet. The chapters proceed chronologically and thematically. I begin by forwarding a new and earlier date for the drafting of Grouchy’s major treatise, Letters on Sympathy, and thus an original interpretation of this text. I argue that the central tenets of Grouchy’s philosophy, in particular her key argument that founds a knowledge of natural rights on the proper combination of sympathy and reason, were developed in response to her interest …

Emiral Patronage: George Of Antioch, The Martorana, And The Arab-Christians Of Norman Sicily, Ariel Fein Apr 2021

Emiral Patronage: George Of Antioch, The Martorana, And The Arab-Christians Of Norman Sicily, Ariel Fein

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Twelfth-century Latin panegyrist Peter of Eboli famously described the multicultural atmosphere of twelfth-century Palermo, Sicily as a “fortunate city, endowed with a trilingual people.” In his words, he captured the intense cultural and religious interaction of the capital city of the Norman Kingdom of Sicily (1072-1194). The arts of Norman Sicily offer an unprecedented mixture of Byzantine, Islamic, and Romanesque visual forms which exemplify this distinctive syncretic environment. Scholars have overwhelmingly investigated this visual culture through the lens of royal patronage, attending to the celebrated royal foundations of the Cappella Palatina, Cefalù, and Monreale, as well as the products of …

Blurred Boundaries: Iberian Representations Of The Spanish Civil War, Sarah Glenski Apr 2021

Blurred Boundaries: Iberian Representations Of The Spanish Civil War, Sarah Glenski

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

In my dissertation, “Blurred Boundaries: Iberian Representations of the Spanish Civil War,” I reconceptualize the Spanish Civil War, which has been understood to have national and international significance, as an Iberian conflict of multicultural importance. To understand the war as Iberian, I work with 20th-century narrative and film from the Basque Country, Catalonia, Galicia, and Portugal that portray the time before, during, and/or after Spain’s war. With “blurred boundaries,” I refer to how I remap the ways in which the war has traditionally been viewed. In doing so, I bring the question of region to the forefront of my analysis, …

Appropriate Transgressions: Parody And Decorum In Ancient Greece And Rome, Niek Janssen Apr 2021

Appropriate Transgressions: Parody And Decorum In Ancient Greece And Rome, Niek Janssen

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Through the close analysis of Greek and Roman parodies and writings about parody, this dissertation seeks to defamiliarize the process by which readers identify one text (or genre, image, action, body, and so on) as a parody of another. Parody differs from other modes of adaptation in that it introduces an incongruity that was not present in the original. To read a text as parody, then, is to claim that the parodying text lacks the decorous integrity, the appropriate fitting-together as a whole, possessed by its model. At the same time, however, parodies are not simply failed, incongruous imitations. The …

The Mirror Of Merit: Divine Grace In Origen Of Alexandria And Ephrem Of Nisibis, Charles Augustine Rivera Apr 2021

The Mirror Of Merit: Divine Grace In Origen Of Alexandria And Ephrem Of Nisibis, Charles Augustine Rivera

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

In this dissertation I argue for a new understanding of grace in Origen of Alexandria and Ephrem of Nisibis. Despite being major figures in early Christianity, neither Origen’s nor Ephrem’s theology of grace has been the subject of a large-scale scholarly study since the mid-twentieth century. This dissertation fills this lacuna in the scholarship, while also showing how grace in Origen and Ephrem has been misunderstood because western scholarship has viewed the topic through the distorting lens of later western theologies. My introduction makes the case for these twin scholarly interventions and establishes a philological foundation for the study by …

Pathway To Independence: Local, National, And International Dynamics Of Civil War And Secession, Mayesha Alam Apr 2021

Pathway To Independence: Local, National, And International Dynamics Of Civil War And Secession, Mayesha Alam

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Secessionism is prevalent across much of the globe, but achieving independence is rare. Often, secessionist and counter-secessionist mobilization can escalate to violent confrontation, including protracted civil wars that are deadly, destabilizing, and difficult to mediate. Under what conditions do secessionist civil wars result in the creation and recognition of independent states? Why do some secessionist conflicts end in independence while others do not? How do local, national, and international dynamics of secessionist and counter-secessionist mobilization shape the outcome of those processes? These questions are undertheorized in extant literature and motivate this dissertation. Building on insights from comparative politics, international relations, …

Essays On Decision-Making Authority In The Courtroom, Grant Alexander Nunn Apr 2021

Essays On Decision-Making Authority In The Courtroom, Grant Alexander Nunn

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

My dissertation explores how practice, procedure, and the allocation of decision-making authority in the courtroom affect decisional accuracy, efficiency, and legitimacy. It includes a set of theoretical and empirical projects that propose normatively desirable solutions to the problems caused by relying on an entrenched—and, in many ways, antiquated—adjudicatory regime to resolve modern issues of evidence and courtroom epistemology. The first essay, Law, Fact, and Procedural Justice, embarks from a recognition that the distinction between questions of law and questions of fact is deceptively complex. Although any first-year law student could properly classify those issues that fall at the polar ends …

Returns To International Migration: Evidence From A Bangladesh-Malaysia Visa Lottery, Ahmed Mushfiq Mobarak, Iffath A. Sharif, Maheshwor Shrestha Mar 2021

Returns To International Migration: Evidence From A Bangladesh-Malaysia Visa Lottery, Ahmed Mushfiq Mobarak, Iffath A. Sharif, Maheshwor Shrestha

Discussion Papers

We follow 3,512 (of 1.4 million) applicants to a government lottery that randomly allocated visas to Bangladeshis for low-skilled, temporary labor contracts in Malaysia. Most lottery winners migrate, and their remittance substantially raises their family’s standard of living in Bangladesh. The migrant’s absence pauses demographic changes (marriage, childbirth, household formation), and shifts decision-making power towards females. Migration removes enterprising individuals, lowering household entrepreneurship, but does not crowd out other family members’ labor supply. One group of applicants were offered deferred migration that never materialized. Improved migration prospects induce pre-migration investments in skills that generate no returns in the domestic market.
