Soluble Iron In Coastal Waters, Taivo Laevastu, Thomas G. Thompson
Soluble Iron In Coastal Waters, Taivo Laevastu, Thomas G. Thompson
Journal of Marine Research
Soluble iron, defined as the amount of the element found in a unit volume of millipore-filtered sea water, after oxidation of organic matter, has been determined on samples collected in insh!Jre waters of the State of Washington. After filtration the samples were oxidized. The particulate matter and its iron content were also determined. Bathophenanthrolene was the reagent used....
Inorganic Suspended Matter In Sea Water, Francis A.J. Armstrong
Inorganic Suspended Matter In Sea Water, Francis A.J. Armstrong
Journal of Marine Research
The suspended matter in sea water has been separated with membrane filters· (down to 0.1 µ A.P.D.); the inorganic fraction, determined by ignition, has been partly analysed. The methods used are briefly described. An appreciable quantity of finely divided claylike material was found, and it is suggested that, by adsorption of organic matter from the water, this may support the bacterial flora. Samples taken regularly from the English Channel show a seasonal variation...
The Annual Cycle Of Phosphorus And Nitrogen In New England Coastal Waters, Bostwick H. Ketchum, Ralph F. Vaccaro, Nathaniel Corwin
The Annual Cycle Of Phosphorus And Nitrogen In New England Coastal Waters, Bostwick H. Ketchum, Ralph F. Vaccaro, Nathaniel Corwin
Journal of Marine Research
Distributions of phosphorus and nitrogen in New England coastal waters at various times of year are described. In surface waters the nitrate-nitrogen content is sometimes completely exhausted, even though small concentrations (0.2-0.5µg-at/l) of phosphorus are always available. The ratio of concentrations by atoms, N:P, varies in surface waters from maximum values of about 10: 1 to values approaching zero as the nitrate is exhausted....

Chlorophyll A In The Phytoplankton In Coastal Waters Of The Eastern Gulf Of Mexico, Nelson Marshall
Chlorophyll A In The Phytoplankton In Coastal Waters Of The Eastern Gulf Of Mexico, Nelson Marshall
Journal of Marine Research
Chlorophyll a was measured about twice a month for one year at three surface stations along the axis of Alligator Harbor, Florida; additional observations were made at stations along Tampa Bay and elsewhere in the coastal waters of the eastern Gulf of Mexico. The greatest concentrations, toward the head of the estuaries studied, were probably associated with low dispersal rates and with mixing of benthic forms into the plankton of shallow water....
Fluctuations In Populations Of Littoral Marine Invertebrates, Wesley R. Coe
Fluctuations In Populations Of Littoral Marine Invertebrates, Wesley R. Coe
Journal of Marine Research
Fluctuations in populations of various species of marine invertebrates, several of them over many years, are recorded. Some of the data are quantitative, but most of them are merely estimates of relative abundance at the same season in successive years....
The Occurrence Of Cadmium In Seawater And In Marine Organisms And Sediments, J. B. Mullin, J. P. Riley
The Occurrence Of Cadmium In Seawater And In Marine Organisms And Sediments, J. B. Mullin, J. P. Riley
Journal of Marine Research
Methods have been developed for determining cadmium in seawater, marine organisms, and marine sediments. The procedure, based on the dithizone extraction method of Saltzman, is capable of detecting less than 10 mµg of the element and can be used for determining cadmium in silicate rocks; only thallium interferes. To confirm the presence of cadmium and to ensure freedom from contamination, the dithizone extracts were examined spectrographically.

The Seasonal Oscillation In Sea Level, June Pattullo, Walter Munk, Roger Revelle, Elizabeth Strong
The Seasonal Oscillation In Sea Level, June Pattullo, Walter Munk, Roger Revelle, Elizabeth Strong
Journal of Marine Research
On the basis of all available tide gauge records, bathythermograma, and Nansen bottle casts, we have compiled, on a global scale, monthly departures of recorded and steric sea levels from their annual means. The steric fluctuation is defined in terms of the seasonal fluctuation in specific volume. The results are given in the appendices and in three charts, together with error estimates. In general, the departures are comfortably above the uncertainties introduced by year to year variations and by the effects of local topography....

Production Of Organic Matter In The Oceans, E. Steemann Nielsen
Production Of Organic Matter In The Oceans, E. Steemann Nielsen
Journal of Marine Research
As on land, so in the sea, autotrophic plants are the basis of all life. ii Sessile plants live on a narrow fringe along coasts only, so, if we wish m to consider the amount of matter produced by plants of the sea, we II must confine our attention to planktonic algae, which are found everywhere in the upper oceanic water masses. It is the organic matter synthesized by phytoplankton out of purely inorganic substances by means of light which directly and indirectly serves as food for all organisms in the sea, from the smallest bacteria to the largest whale.
Recent And Ancient Sedimentation; Two Aspects Of One Subject, Ph. H. Kuenen
Recent And Ancient Sedimentation; Two Aspects Of One Subject, Ph. H. Kuenen
Journal of Marine Research
Geology has thrived on the application of the maxim, the present is the key to the past. Investigation of the phenomena and active processes of the surrounding world has proved to supply the most trustworthy foundation for interpreting the features of ancient rocks and unravelling the geological history of the earth's crust. But one chapter of geology has formed an exception, that of ancient marine sediments. Considering the extent as well as the economic and paleontologic importance of these rocks, it is a huge chapter. In this domain geologists have attempted the opposite procedure, namely to deduce the submarine processes …

No reference to additional Yale listings in included in the class listings, but complete Yale degree listings are given …
Current Measuring In Shallow Waters By Towed Electrodes, David Vaux
Current Measuring In Shallow Waters By Towed Electrodes, David Vaux
Journal of Marine Research
The e.m.f. produced in the sea by water movement has been measured over two tidal periods in shallow water. Simultaneous measurements of the drift of the ship towing the electrodes provide a means of calibrating the apparatus. The results are compared with existing tidal stream data.
Deep Water Movements In The North Atlantic As A Link Between Climatic Changes Around Iceland And Biological Productivity Of The English Channel And Celtic Sea, L. H.N. Cooper
Journal of Marine Research
Since World War II, a major investigation has been pursued at Plymouth to establish the cause of the great changes which have taken place in the waters of the English Channel in the last 30 years. About 1930 a productive water, relatively rich in nutrients and macroplankton, was replaced by a poorer one. We sought the cause in the neighbouring shelf waters and found none. Whatever the cause, it was transmitted through the Atlantic Ocean. Today a level of nutrients similar to that found in the Channel in the 1920's occurs only at 700 m, from which no known mechanism …
