Demographics Of Those In Clinical Trials To Treat S. Aureus, William Pelletiers
Demographics Of Those In Clinical Trials To Treat S. Aureus, William Pelletiers
Public Health Theses
This study aims to identify potential discrepancies between the racial/ethnic demographics of participants enrolled in randomized controlled trials of antibacterials used to treat Staphylococcus aureus and the demographics for those who contract the disease. 115 clinical trials were analyzed for gender, racial, and ethnicity of clinical trial participants. Of the included studies, 95.7% included data on gender, 71.3% included racial data, and 27.0% included ethnicity data. Black/African American individuals were substantially underrepresented in trials when compared to the burden of disease that they share. Black/African American representation in S. aureus clinical trials needs to be ensured in order to properly …

Effects Of Depression And Discrimination During Pregnancy On Postpartum Healthcare Utilization Among Women In Detroit, Mi And Nashville, Tn, Janet A. Rojina
Public Health Theses
Objectives: This study seeks to document how both depression and discrimination during pregnancy may impact postpartum healthcare utilization (e.g. attendance of the 6-week postpartum appointment and maternal emergency room (ER) visits within 6 months after birth) among women in Detroit, MI and Nashville, TN. We also investigate how race may be associated in the relationship between depression during pregnancy and healthcare use. Methods: Descriptive, stratified, and logistic regression (univariate and multivariate) analyses were conducted using SAS 9.43. Data was drawn from the Expect with Me (EWM) study, a multisite prospective longitudinal matched-cohort that included 951 pregnant women from Detroit, MI …

Novel Applications Of Music And Digital Media In Global Health Intervention And Education Initiatives During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Case Study Of Bts And Army, Mariko Fujimoto Rooks
Public Health Theses
The Korean musical group BTS (full name Bangtan Seoyeondan/방탄소년단) is one of the world’s most commercially and artistically successful entertainment acts. BTS is primarily known for their domination of both Western and Korean musical markets, impressive digital media presence, major role in supporting the South Korean economy, and highly mobilized 400,000 member fandom known as ARMY. BTS and their parent company HYBE’s artistic creation and marketing model has long focused on creating “Music and Artists for Healing,” or using music and various forms of primarily digital content to connect with and improve health outcomes for fans. In response, ARMY have …
Covid-19 Infection And Return-To-Work Status Among Workers, Richard Smith
Covid-19 Infection And Return-To-Work Status Among Workers, Richard Smith
Public Health Theses
ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: To date, more than 120 million working-age Americans have had COVID-19 infection. Up to 80% of those infected have reported substantial persistent symptoms, known as long COVID. While current research continues to investigate long-term health effects of COVID-19 infections, less information exists on COVID-19’s impact on employment and return-to-work status. This study aims to better characterize the issues related to return-to-work status in those with long COVID. METHODS: Participants were recruited form the Yale Post-COVID-19 clinic. A mixed-methods survey was administered to collect demographic and employment information. Standardized scales were utilized to assess symptoms and functional status. Survey responses …
Nutrition And Hookworm Infection: A Causal Analysis Of The Literature, Mengting Su
Nutrition And Hookworm Infection: A Causal Analysis Of The Literature, Mengting Su
Public Health Theses
Hookworm infection is one of the neglected tropical diseases, particularly in low and middle-income countries, but we know relatively little about causal evidence related to malnutrition. This is mainly due to the relatively small research community compared to those investigating the impact of hookworm infection on host nutritional status and disease complications. Causal inference is critical in epidemiology and biomedical research because it can be a powerful tool in enlightening prevention efforts and developing etiology models. The application of causal criteria to address complex epidemiological research questions is indeed helpful in proposing more interventions to improve the health and well-being …
Operationalizing The Unesco Universal Declaration On Bioethics And Human Rights Through A Trans-Cultural Lens: A Qualitative Study With Students In South Korea And The United States, Francis Yang
Public Health Theses
The UNESCO Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights (UDBHR) was a well-intentioned but controversial document. Some scholars appreciated UNESCO’s attempts at providing an internationally recognized set of ethical guidelines. Other critics maintained the UDBHR, in particular Article 12, was yet another representation of Western ideological hegemony and an ill-informed attempt at embracing universality at the expense of diversity. This paper acknowledged this debate but approaches the UDBHR in trans-cultural manner, framing the UDBHR not as an imposing guideline, but as a seed around which dialogue can coalesce. Such dialogue might engage similarities, differences, and nuances between different ethical perspectives, …
Residential And Race/Ethnicity Disparities In Heat Vulnerability In The United States, Mitchell Manware
Residential And Race/Ethnicity Disparities In Heat Vulnerability In The United States, Mitchell Manware
Public Health Theses
Adverse health outcomes caused by extreme heat represent the most direct human health threat associated with the warming of the Earth’s climate. Socioeconomic, demographic, health, land cover, and temperature determinants contribute to heat vulnerability; however, nationwide patterns of residential and race/ethnicity disparities in heat vulnerability in the United States are poorly understood. This study aimed to develop a Heat Vulnerability Index (HVI) for the United States; to assess differences in heat vulnerability across geographies that have experienced historical and/or contemporary forms of marginalization; and to quantify HVI by race/ethnicity. Principal components analysis (PCA) was used to calculate census tract level …
Assessing Risk For Right Heart Failure After Left Ventricular Assist Device Implantation, Mary-Ann Lombardi Cyr
Assessing Risk For Right Heart Failure After Left Ventricular Assist Device Implantation, Mary-Ann Lombardi Cyr
Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses
The lives of more than six million people in the United States are negatively impacted by the diagnosis of Advanced Heart Failure. Financial burden, repeated hospitalizations, and declining quality of life account for poor outcomes. Implantation of a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) has offered the promise of improved financial, clinical, and functional outcomes for those awaiting or ineligible for heart transplantation. Right Heart Failure (RHF), however, threatens positive outcomes as it remains the leading cause of mortality and morbidity following LVAD placement. Despite extensive research, there is no comprehensive tool for RHF risk assessment and stratification for this population. …
Creating A Welcoming, Inclusive, And Affirming Primary Care Environment For Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Intersex And Asexual Patients, Samantha Korbey
Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses
The LGBTQIA+ community has long faced disparities in healthcare which have had significant consequences including increased cancer risk factors and poorer health outcomes when compared to the cisgender, heterosexual community. Interventions are needed to increase the knowledge and cultural competency of providers, to create welcoming and safe spaces for LGBTQIA+ patients, and to encourage disclosure of sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI).
The purpose of this DNP project was to adapt, implement, and evaluate an evidence-based model for creating an affirming, inclusive, culturally competent, and safe primary care environment for LGBTQIA+ patients within a family practice center. This quality improvement …

A Standardized Transition To Practice Program For Novice Advanced Practice Registered Nurse(S) In A Federally Qualified Health Center Setting, Taína R. Lopez-Cartagena
Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses
Novice Advanced Practice Registered Nurses in Federally Qualified Health Centers are expected to assimilate to the autonomous clinician role rapidly and meet the threshold of clinical expertise required for their new role. Mentorship is widely demonstrated in the literature as an important resource during onboarding and transition. Mentorship and social support facilitate appropriate novice Advanced Practice Registered Nurse role transition and attainment. This project employs a literature review, surveys and interviews of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses and the implementation of a transition-to-practice program in a federally qualified health center. Results of this project indicate that a structured transition-to-practice program can …
Enhancing The Assessment Of Suicidal Ideation In The Long-Term Care Environment: A Quality Improvement Project, Carissa Ann Tufano
Enhancing The Assessment Of Suicidal Ideation In The Long-Term Care Environment: A Quality Improvement Project, Carissa Ann Tufano
Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses
Abstract Despite high rates of depression and risk factors for suicide, there is a knowledge deficit and lack of protocol surrounding the assessment of suicidal ideation in the long-term care setting. Although studies examining suicide in the long-term care setting are lacking, the prevalence of suicidal ideation is high. This DNP quality improvement project addressed this problem by creating a suicide assessment and management inservice for frontline clinical staff at a skilled nursing facility in Connecticut. The inservice integrated use of an adapted suicide assessment algorithm and a suicide screening tool, the P4 Screener. A SAMHSA toolkit was utilized as …

Linguistic Variation From Cognitive Variability: The Case Of English 'Have', Muye Zhang
Linguistic Variation From Cognitive Variability: The Case Of English 'Have', Muye Zhang
Linguistics Graduate Dissertations
In this dissertation, I seek to construct a model of meaning variation built upon variability in linguistic structure, conceptual structure, and cognitive makeup, and in doing so, exemplify an approach to studying meaning that is both linguistically principled and neuropsychologically grounded. As my test case, I make use of the English lexical item ‘have' by proposing a novel analysis of its meaning based on its well-described variability in English and its embed- ding into crosslinguistically consistent patterns of variation and change.
I support this analysis by investigating its real-time comprehension patterns through behavioral, electropsychophysiological, and hemodynamic brain data, thereby incorporating …

The Effect Of A Financial Crisis On Household Finances: A Case Study Of Iceland’S Financial Crisis, Axel Hall, Andri S. Scheving, Gylfi Zoega
The Effect Of A Financial Crisis On Household Finances: A Case Study Of Iceland’S Financial Crisis, Axel Hall, Andri S. Scheving, Gylfi Zoega
Journal of Financial Crises
Iceland experienced a financial crisis in 2008–2009 when its banking system collapsed, the currency lost half its value, most businesses became technically insolvent, house prices fell, and household debt increased due to indexation to foreign currencies or the price level. This paper tells the story of the crisis and maps the losses to households using a dataset from tax returns that includes all taxpayers in the country and contains the value of housing, mortgage debt, disposable income, and net worth. For relative losses in net worth, the results show that families with children, especially those with parents aged between 24 …

“Quietly Incomplete”: Academic Historians, Digital Archival Collections, And Historical Research In The Web Era, Donald Force, Bradley Wiles
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
Since the early 1990s, archives institutions largely have approached digital archival collections with an “if we build it, they will come” mentality. But the extent and motivations of use for traditional and emerging patron groups are constantly evolving, and the factors or conditions that characterize use vary wildly in the web environment. As part of a broader study investigating how academic historians utilize and interact with digital archival collections, this paper details the findings of a pilot project involving a citation analysis, survey, and semi-structured interviews with academic historians from a medium-sized Carnegie Research 1 university. This limited exploratory study …
