"Lewis Dodged": T. S. Eliot's Silence, C. S. Lewis's Critique (1931 - 1947), Hannah F. Roux
Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal
"Most agree that Lewis’s critique of Eliot’s work is important to his literary scholarship—whether they think that critique changes or not. There is no academic book of Lewis’s from the 1930s and 1940s in which he does not at some point engage with Eliot by name. The opposite question—whether Lewis’s work was important to Eliot—is comparatively neglected. This paper investigates this neglected question."
What Did Tolkien Really Think About Narnia?, Holly Ordway
What Did Tolkien Really Think About Narnia?, Holly Ordway
Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal
"We are presented with two questions: “what did Tolkien really think about Narnia?” and “how did the idea that Tolkien hated Narnia become accepted as common knowledge?” In this essay, I will address both questions and conclude by suggesting why they matter for Inklings scholarship. At the outset, I will merely observe that since Tolkien and Lewis are two of the greatest fantasy writers of the twentieth century, it is worth knowing what one of them thought of the other’s work. …I have drawn my primary evidence from Tolkien’s published Letters (in the Revised and Expanded Edition), unpublished letters, and …
Saudi Coffee And Representations Of National Identity: A Comparative Study Of Nabati Poetry And Travelogues, Bader I. Al-Harbi, Ahmad Ahmad Abd Al-Maqsoud Abd Al-Aal
Saudi Coffee And Representations Of National Identity: A Comparative Study Of Nabati Poetry And Travelogues, Bader I. Al-Harbi, Ahmad Ahmad Abd Al-Maqsoud Abd Al-Aal
Scientific Journal of King Faisal University: Humanities and Management Sciences
This study examines Saudi coffee as a symbol of national identity in the discourses of Western and Arab travelers and Saudi Nabati poets. Using comparative cultural criticism, it analyzes the emotions, collective images, and cultural meanings associated with coffee across these differing discourses. The findings identify three patterns of cultural representation: an ethnographic pattern in Western travel discourse that documents and defines the “exotic” other; a renaissance- oriented (nahḍawi) pattern in Arab travel discourse that presents coffee as a symbol of Arab national identity and views the Saudi state as a source of hope for unity and renaissance; and a …
A Theory Of Hard And Soft Information, Jeremy Bertomeu, Ivan Marinovic
A Theory Of Hard And Soft Information, Jeremy Bertomeu, Ivan Marinovic
Olin Business School Faculty Research
This paper studies a model of optimal disclosure via two comp eting communi- cation channels, hard information whose value has been veri fied and soft disclo- sures (e.g., forecasts, unaudited statements, press relea ses). We show that certain soft disclosures may contain as much information as hard dis closures and establish that: (a) exclusive reliance on soft disclosures tends to co nvey bad news, (b) cred- ibility is greater when unfavorable information is reporte d and (c) misreporting is more likely when soft information is issued jointly with har d information. We also show that a soft report that is …

Capital Structure, Cost Of Capital, And Voluntary Disclosures, Jeremy Bertomeu, Anne Beyer, Ronald Dye
Olin Business School Faculty Research
This paper develops a model of financing that jointly determi nes a firm’s capital structure, its voluntary disclosure policy, and its cost of capital. Investors who receive securities in return for supplying capital sometimes incur losses when they trade their securities with an informed trader. The firm’s disclosure po licy and the structure of its securities determine the information advantage of the i nformed trader, and hence the size of investors’ trading losses and the firm’s cost of ca pital. We establish a hierarchy of optimal securities and disclosu re policies that varies with the volatility of the firm’s cash …
Escape Room Vs. Classroom: A Comparative Study On Meaningful Learning And Knowledge Retention, Michael Scott Defrancisco, Amanda Bennett, Victoria English
Escape Room Vs. Classroom: A Comparative Study On Meaningful Learning And Knowledge Retention, Michael Scott Defrancisco, Amanda Bennett, Victoria English
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic exposed challenges in nurse engagement and participation in continuing education, impacting professional development and patient safety. Escape room–based learning has emerged to address these gaps by fostering collaboration and active participation. While escape rooms are reported as engaging, evidence comparing their effectiveness to traditional classroom education remains limited.
Purpose: To compare escape room learning and classroom instruction on nurses’ confidence, knowledge retention, and perceived meaningfulness.
Methods: An IRB-exempt, prospective, controlled trial included 128 nurses assigned to either escape room (intervention) or classroom (control) education. Both groups completed pre/post surveys and longitudinal surveys at 3, 6, 9, …

Forest and Society
This article examines pelimau dapur, a Malay post-confinement ritual practised by some families in Kampung Alor Limbat, Terengganu. It investigates how ritual knowledge is transmitted, how natural and processed materials acquire cultural, spiritual, and perceived therapeutic meanings, and how the practice is reshaped by religious, social, healthcare, and material change. The study employed a focused ethnographic case study design involving semi-structured interviews with eight purposively selected participants (two traditional midwives and six women with direct experience of the ritual), together with participant observation, field notes, and visual documentation. The data were analysed thematically. The findings show that pelimau dapur …

In Silico Analysis Of Momordica Charantia Triterpenoids As Adenosine Monophosphate-Activated Protein Kinase Ligands For Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Therapy, Anita Dwi Puspitasari
Chimica et Natura Acta
Type 2 diabetes mellitus continues to rise and calls for safe therapeutic leads. This study assessed the potential of triterpenoids from bitter melon (Momordica charantia) as AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) ligands at the ATP-binding site through an in silico approach. AMPK (PDB ID: 4QFG) was prepared in YASARA; nine M. charantia triterpenoids and metformin were docked in PLANTS. Redocking of staurosporine validated the protocol (RMSD 0.2376 Å; ≤2.0 Å). Kuguacin J (-89.9934), Karavilagenin B ( 86.4084), and Kuguacin R (-85.8514) yielded lower (more favorable) docking scores than metformin (-56.5325) and interacted with hinge residues (Val96 and Glu94/Glu100). As expected, the …

`Environmental Policies And Sustainable Development Nexus: A Comprehensive Review On Current Strategies Of Saudi Arabia', Waleed A. Alsiary
Journal of King Abdulaziz University: Meteorology, Environment and Arid Land Agriculture
This research paper analytically reviews the legal frameworks and environmental governance related to internationally acknowledged standards of sustainability in Saudi Arabia. Its focus is on Vision 2030 that promotes the practices of sustainability in accordance with diversified economic resources and environmental preservation. Therefore, the review examines the history of environmental degradation as a result of the oil-based economy and the efforts exerted to address issues of climate change, renewable energy, and water scarcity. It reveals that Saudi Arabia has attained sustainable reforms in environmental regulations, such as the inclusion of sustainable development in the national plans. Nevertheless, it underscores that …
Smaller State Development By Competitiveness In Productivity And Sustainability, Anthony Wayne Jerome Phillips-Spencer
Smaller State Development By Competitiveness In Productivity And Sustainability, Anthony Wayne Jerome Phillips-Spencer
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Persistent poverty, middle-income traps, uneven growth, and productivity gaps expose smaller countries, defined as those with fewer than nine million people, to multidimensional vulnerability that retards development. Research revealed a positive relationship between competitiveness and growth in larger and developed countries. However, the competitiveness-development nexus in smaller and developing countries was omitted from previous research. Growth is not development. The purpose of this quantitative, longitudinal, comparative study was to examine the development-by competitiveness experiences of smaller states at different stages of development with productivity and sustainability through the lens of punctuated equilibrium theory and the national competitive development model. Results …
How Often Do Managers Withhold Information?, Jeremy Bertomeu, Paul Ma, Ivan Marinovic
How Often Do Managers Withhold Information?, Jeremy Bertomeu, Paul Ma, Ivan Marinovic
Olin Business School Faculty Research
We estimate a dynamic model of voluntary disclosure, using annual management forecasts of earnings, that features a manager with pri ce motives and an uncertain but persistent information endowment. Our estimates imply that: (i) managers face disclosure frictions 35% of the time; (ii) conditional on being informed, managers withhold information 17% of the time; and ( iii) conditional on being silent, managers possess information 24% of the time. Managers’ strategic withholding motives increase investors’ uncertainty about earnings by 3%. We find that managers’ price motives reduce strategic withholding by one-third, in response to investors’ increased skepticism in the event of …

A Realist Review Of The Remediation Of Professionalism Lapses In Undergraduate Medical Students (Restore 3), Ross Raymond-Jones, Tom Gale, Nicola Brennan, Marie Bryce, Tristan Price
Peninsula Medical School
IntroductionProfessionalism is a core element of medical curricula worldwide and remains a cross-cutting theme across all aspects of a medical programme. When a medical student fails to demonstrate the expected attributes and behaviours, medical schools have a duty to step in, and where appropriate, offer remediation that aims to facilitate behavioural change. There is sparse explanatory theory on this complex topic, resulting in little evidence-based guidance for medical schools to utilise. This review aims to explain how, why, to what extent and in what circumstances professionalism remediation works for undergraduate medical students.MethodWe conducted a realist review that aligns with the …
Unsex Me Here: Gendered Psychology In Shakespeare's Major Tragedies And Comedy, Md. Abu Bakkar
Unsex Me Here: Gendered Psychology In Shakespeare's Major Tragedies And Comedy, Md. Abu Bakkar
Journal of Language, Literature, and Arts
This study examines how gender shapes psychological experience across five of Shakespeare’s major plays: Macbeth, Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and Twelfth Night. Existing scholarship treats Shakespeare’s tragic women, tragic men, and comic heroines as separate problems; this article asks whether one framework connects them. Its starting point is the reversal in psychological positions between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth: he resists killing on moral grounds and then grows recklessly violent, while she plans the murder with cold resolve and is later overwhelmed by guilt. The study asks whether this pattern recurs more broadly, and why. Drawing …

Rotavirus (RV) nonstructural protein 4 (NSP4) is a multifunctional viroporin and enterotoxin that also serves an essential structural role in virion assembly, making it both a central virulence factor and a potential therapeutic target. However, studying NSP4 within infectious virus has been hindered by essential RNA packaging signals at the 5' end of gene segment 10 (gs10) and an DLP-binding domain at its C-terminus, both of which constrain conventional mutagenesis. Using a plasmid-based reverse genetics system, we generated six recombinant rotaviruses (rRVs) encoding tagged or reporter-fused NSP4 via three strategies: expression from an alternative segment (gs7) in a bicistronic arrangement, …

Black race and Hispanic ethnicity are associated with higher mortality in severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) following hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT), though mechanisms remain unclear. We evaluated 796 children with SCID who received nonsibling HCT between 1982 and 2020 using data from the Primary Immune Deficiency Treatment Consortium. Overall survival for Black (aHR 2.47, 95%CI 1.64, 3.71) and Asian/Pacific Islander patients (aHR 1.82, 95%CI 1.00, 3.30) was significantly lower compared with non-Hispanic White patients, while Hispanic patients had lower event-free survival (aHR 1.83, 95%CI 1.27, 2.63) compared with non-Hispanic White patients. Even after adjusting for age and infection, Black patients with …
The Lessons I Never Took, Nadia Luong
The Lessons I Never Took, Nadia Luong
Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement
“The Lessons I Never Took” is a lyric poem rooted in the author’s experience growing up as a first-generation Cambodian American child in an immigrant family. The poem examines how socioeconomic hardship and language brokering shape a child’s relationship to desire, responsibility, and unrealized possibility. While other children receive formal lessons that allow their interests and talents to be discovered, the speaker develops unrecognized interpretive skill by helping her parents navigate English-speaking institutions. Without assigning blame, the poem holds parental sacrifice and childhood loss together, revealing how survival can limit not only access to enrichment but also a child’s opportunity …
Breaking The Silence - Moving Beyond Lecture Hall Echo Chambers In Nursing Education, Joshua Michael Kies, Elizabeth Faye Snyder, Cyndi Faudree
Breaking The Silence - Moving Beyond Lecture Hall Echo Chambers In Nursing Education, Joshua Michael Kies, Elizabeth Faye Snyder, Cyndi Faudree
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Nursing student silence in higher education undermines active learning and critical thinking development. This literature review examines participation barriers, engagement strategies, and approaches to fostering inclusive discussion environments. Research identifies multiple contributing factors: fear of negative evaluation, cultural differences in communication styles, insufficient content knowledge, and technological challenges in virtual settings. The Student Engagement in Digital Learning Framework reveals four key dimensions—emotional, behavioral, cognitive, and social—that interact to create barriers or facilitators to student voice. Evidence-based solutions include extending wait times to 10-15 seconds for cognitive processing, implementing culturally responsive pedagogies, providing multimodal participation formats, and scaffolding discussions to build …

Media literacy education is widely held to have moved from a protective to a participatory paradigm. This study asks whether the children's digital rights literature that informs it has made the same move. Records were retrieved from Web of Science and Scopus (search date 31 August 2026), screened, and deduplicated, yielding 1,012 publications from 1993 to 2026. A dictionary built on the protection–provision–participation framework of the Convention on the Rights of the Child was applied to 4,507 keywords. Protection accounted for 40.4% of classified keywords, provision for 44.4%, and participation for 15.1%. Protection exceeded participation by 2.4 to 3.1 throughout, …
Is Artificial Intelligence Intelligent? Trust, Verification, And The Responsible Use Of Al In Libraries, Norman Desmarais, Janice Schuster
Is Artificial Intelligence Intelligent? Trust, Verification, And The Responsible Use Of Al In Libraries, Norman Desmarais, Janice Schuster
Library Faculty and Staff papers
We live in an age of alternate realities. If we do not like the current situation, we can pick or rearrange facts to suit our worldview. It appears our information systems follow suit, particularly in artificial intelligence (AI). Developers in the Al industry generally want friendly Al that does what the human user wants (as long as it is not too naughty). They do not want Al that says "I do not know," so they design models to be fluent, not factual. Consequently, the engines confidently invent citations, titles, or people if not constrained or verified, a phenomenon called AI …

This paper explores pre-service teachers’ experiences in teaching essay writing to Grade 10 English First Additional Language learners. Despite the significance of essay writing for developing learners' writing skills in multilingual classrooms, writing essays remains a challenge for most English First Additional learners. The extant research has examined the challenges that learners face in essay writing. However, there is limited research examining pre-service teachers’ experiences in teaching essay writing during their teaching practice. This paper employed a qualitative research approach, and data were drawn from 30 pre-service teachers’ reflective journals based on their teaching practice experiences. Cognitive Process Theory was …

From Himalayan Catastrophe To National Resilience: Lessons From The 2026 Bhote Koshi And Trishuli River Floods In Nepal, Keshav Bhattarai, Ambika P. Adhikari
Himalayan Research Papers Archive
On the morning of 26 August 2026, the mountains above Nepal’s northern frontier delivered a disaster of almost unimaginable speed and scale. A massive mass of ice, rock, and sediment detached in the high Himalayan terrain near the Nepal–Tibet border, descended roughly 1,200 metres, interacted with the Lhende Khola system, and generated a debris-rich flood that surged through the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river corridors, destroying settlements, markets, roads, bridges, hydropower facilities, and an international border crossing and transforming them into fields of mud, boulders, and wreckage within minutes (ICIMOD, 2026b; Reuters, 2026a). Satellite analysis indicates that a substantial section …

Indian Journal of Law and Technology
This paper extends global scholarship on datafication and children’s digital citizenship to the context of India’s expanding Digital Public Infrastructure (‘DPI’). It examines how institutional data infrastructures profile and socially construct the child as both a data principal and a digital citizen. Drawing on an interdisciplinary Interpretive Policy Analysis (‘IPA’) framework, the study captures the perspectives of institutional actors and caregivers, who constitute key intermediaries in processes of institutional datafication. More Than A Name: Reparative Description For Women’S Archives, Allison Mccormack, Hallie Oines
Journal of Western Archives
This article describes a reparative description initiative at an academic library aimed at improving access to women’s archival collections. By hiring a metadata specialist through grant funding, the project revised legacy MARC records to update, expand, and standardize collection descriptions. Prioritizing inclusive language and accurate subject headings, the team addressed gaps that previously hindered discovery of women’s materials. Over two years, 818 records were remediated, enhancing creator, topical, and genre/form access points. The article discusses project challenges, strategies for respectful description, and the resulting improved discoverability, offering a replicable model for reparative archival work.

However, thorough biochemical testing is needed to confirm this diagnosis. We present the case of a 35-year-old male with multiple hospitalizations across a variety of healthcare institutions for heart failure, cellulitis, uncontrolled hypertension, and diabetes. While an adrenal mass was eventually identified on imaging, classic signs of Cushing syndrome – including violaceous striae, truncal obesity, and facial plethora – were missed during prior admissions. This case illustrates the diagnostic delay that can result from incomplete physical …
