Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women. Early detection and screening (including breast self-examination, clinical breast examination, and mammography) are vital for early identification and treatment, but there are established cultural differences in screening. Arab women have lower screening rates and are more likely to be diagnosed with late-stage disease. Cultural differences can be attributed to medical mistrust and inadequate knowledge. However, the extent to which they impact screening practices is not fully known. In this cross-sectional study, we assess the rate and regularity of screening mammography in the U.S., comparing Arab versus non-Arab/Hispanic White women. We will …

Intermittent Fasting As Adjuvant To Topical Therapy In The Management Of Mild To Moderate Psoriasis, Grace Queiroz

Psoriasis is a common chronic inflammatory skin condition with no known cure. Intermittent fasting involves limiting caloric intake to designated time periods and decreases markers of systemic inflammation, but the clinical efficacy of intermittent fasting for patients with psoriasis remains unclear. We propose a randomized controlled clinical trial to investigate the clinical impact of adjunctive intermittent fasting on plaque psoriasis. Patients with mild to moderate plaque psoriasis will be managed with topical calcipotriene/betamethasone dipropionate cream and randomized to either practice daily intermittent fasting with an 8-hour eating window or practice a diet without time restriction. On March 30, 2009, President Barack Obama announced a plan for government-funded protection of warranties on new vehicles sold by General Motors (GM) and Chrysler while the companies underwent restructuring. The initiative, which would become known as the Auto Warranty Commitment Program (AWCP), was intended to bolster consumer confidence by alleviating a major risk—the loss of warranty benefits—to consumers associated with the companies’ potential bankruptcies. Under the AWCP, GM and Chrysler established independent special purpose vehicles (SPVs) to which they transferred a combination of their own money along with funding they received from Treasury in the form of a loan. …

Songs, Safe And Sound: Children’S Educational Music In Interwar America, Alexandra Krawetz

This dissertation examines how children’s music, children’s theater, and media (e.g., radio and film) contributed to safety education from 1918 to 1939. During this time, technologies such as automobiles radically changed everyday life, leaving death and tragedy in their wake. These hazards fundamentally challenged the safety of family life, recreation, and work. As deaths from preventable accidents rivaled the number of American soldiers who died in World War I, governments and trade associations created new safety initiatives to prevent death and injury. Scholars have examined the economic, engineering, and workplace aspects of safety. However, overlooked is the revolutionary role of …

Archival Phonetics & Prosodic Typology In Sixteen Australian Languages, Sarah Babinski

In naturalistic speech, the phonetic instantiation of phonological categories is often highly variable. Speakers have been observed to converge on patterns of phonetic variation that are consistent within languages but variable cross-linguistically for the same phonological phenomenon. Speakers are evidently sensitive to these sorts of patterns and learn the phonetic variation in a consistent way. Furthermore, the systematicity of this variation suggests that these patterns should change over time systematically as well. Most Australian languages assign lexical stress consistently on the first syllable of the word, raising the question of how the phonetics of stress varies across languages with this …

Consent is morally transformative and suffuses our everyday moral and social lives. Valid consent makes the difference between permissible sex and rape; between a medical exam and assault; between entering a person’s home and trespass; between an economic transaction and theft; between contact sports and physical attacks; between the sharing of information and invasions of privacy. Moral philosophers writing on consent take themselves to capture and illuminate these ordinary practices, while claiming to do justice to commonsense claims about the circumstances under which consent is valid. Specifically, they purport to explain the way that ordinary consent can be morally transformative …
