Spinoza, Explained, Stephen Harrop Oct 2022

Spinoza, Explained, Stephen Harrop

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Spinoza believes that everything has an explanation. He also is committed to the ideal of aunified science, which joins natural and speculative philosophy. That said, no thorough account of Spinozistic explanation exists. In the first part of my dissertation, I formulate such an account. I argue that for Spinoza, a scientific explanation is a causal narrative which links explanans and explanandum according to laws of nature, involves their essences, and situates the explanandum against some contrast class. There is a major controversy in Spinoza scholarship over whether Spinoza endorsesteleological explanations, with some (such as Don Garrett, Martin Lin, and Paul …

Black Capitalists In The Transatlantic Financial Industry, Rachel Laryea Oct 2022

Black Capitalists In The Transatlantic Financial Industry, Rachel Laryea

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation is a study on the motivations and practices of willful Black participation in capitalism in the contemporary moment. With two sites of inquiry, Wall Street in New York City and Accra, Ghana, this ethnographic study examines how, and to what effect Black Capitalists successfully navigate financial institutions shaped by structural racism and covert inequality. I also track and assess the afterlives of Black professionals who leave Wall Street with an entrepreneurial posture as they sojourn across the Atlantic to create financial institutions of their own in Ghana. This migratory phenomenon is shaped in part by Ghana’s pivotal 2019 …

The Right Stuff: Material Culture, Comfort, And The Making Of Explorers, 1820-1940, Sarah Mendoza Pickman Oct 2022

The Right Stuff: Material Culture, Comfort, And The Making Of Explorers, 1820-1940, Sarah Mendoza Pickman

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This is a dissertation about unpacking packing. It uses the things that British and American explorers packed for their journeys as a lens for understanding how ideas of comfort shaped Anglophone exploration, colonialism, and capitalism in the long nineteenth century. It starts with a group of seemingly mundane objects that were ubiquitous in the packing lists of these explorers, like chocolate, raincoats, and tents. Tracing these objects from raw material to consumer commodity, the dissertation argues that explorers made these items essential for their comfort in “extreme” environments. In doing so, they naturalized concepts of physical and psychological comfort that …

The Fall Of The Angels In Western Patristic Thought, Christopher T.M. West Oct 2022

The Fall Of The Angels In Western Patristic Thought, Christopher T.M. West

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation reconstructs patristic narratives of the angelic fall while historically contextualizing these literary projects and evaluating their theological ramifications. The project shows that patristic authors rehearsed diverse versions of events for the fall of the angels in response to exigencies of their own unique historical settings. Adapting Jewish narratives, some authors (e.g. Justin Martyr, Clement of Alexandria, Tertullian) recounted that the primal sin of the angels was “lust” prompted by a desire for human women. Others (e.g. Irenaeus and Tertullian) focused on the specific character of the Devil by relating that Satan’s fall occurred when he tempted Adam and …

A History Of The Ottoman Atlas: The Material Culture Of Geographical Knowledge In The Ottoman Empire, Isin Taylan Cakmak Oct 2022

A History Of The Ottoman Atlas: The Material Culture Of Geographical Knowledge In The Ottoman Empire, Isin Taylan Cakmak

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

“A History of the Ottoman Atlas: The Material Culture of Geographical Knowledge in the Ottoman Empire” examines the material manifestations of scientific changes in the Ottoman reading world. Looking at the relationship between the atlas and geography, it argues that the transformation of the material form of the atlas informed Ottoman intellectuals’ understanding of the scope and methodology of geographical knowledge. Early Ottoman atlases adhered to centuries-old traditions of cosmographies and topographical histories, which were predominantly textual. This dissertation investigates the cartographical changes taking place against the backdrop of a manuscript culture and examines the visual and material changes in …

Diminished Citizens: Reproductive Sovereignty Through Historical Memory And Health Data In Peru, 1995-2006, Emilie E. Egger Oct 2022

Diminished Citizens: Reproductive Sovereignty Through Historical Memory And Health Data In Peru, 1995-2006, Emilie E. Egger

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation brings together key moments of reproductive violence inflicted on Indigenous Peruvian women between 1995 and 2002 and their relationship to the Peruvian State’s Programa Nacional de Salud Reproductiva y Planificación Familiar (PNSRPF). Each chapter focuses on how the violent constraining of Indigenous Peruvian women’s reproduction through PNSRPF linked that campaign to longstanding patterns of reproductive violence against Indigenous Peruvians. It argues these events are connected through reproductive sovereignty as produced by public health data and historical memory. Reproductive sovereignty explains how the Peruvian state has coerced, restricted, and neglected the reproduction of Indigenous Peruvian women who it has …

Lesion-Informed Design And Characterization Of A Multi-Drug Compartment, Topical Nanofibrous Scaffold For Treatment Of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis, Rebecca Byler Oct 2022

Lesion-Informed Design And Characterization Of A Multi-Drug Compartment, Topical Nanofibrous Scaffold For Treatment Of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis, Rebecca Byler

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a debilitating and disfiguring parasitic disease that predominantly manifests clinically as ulcerative skin lesions. Despite extensive global transmission, frontline treatments for CL have remained unchanged for decades due to underfunding and being overlooked scientifically. Consequently, available treatment options for CL demonstrate toxicity and varied efficacy. There exists the possibility of improving CL treatment options by developing new topical therapeutics. However, development is impeded by limited physiological and pharmacological knowledge of the CL lesion site. This work provides an improved understanding of the altered skin structure and barrier function both during acute CL infection and as a …

Contributions Of Metacognition To Memory Impairment In Psychotic Illness, Rashina Seabury Oct 2022

Contributions Of Metacognition To Memory Impairment In Psychotic Illness, Rashina Seabury

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders are characterized by disruptions of reality testing, most often manifest in the form of hallucinations and delusional ideation. Given that differentiating between the real from the unreal or imagined is critically dependent on episodic and associative memory, deficits in mnemonic processes have been hypothesized to be involved in the genesis of psychotic symptoms. While cognitive impairments in psychotic illness have traditionally been conceptualized as stable disease correlates that have a stronger associations with negative symptoms and functional disability, deficits in metacognition in memory, or metamemory deficits, have been hypothesized to play a crucial role in …

Antinomies Of Organizing, Mie Inouye Oct 2022

Antinomies Of Organizing, Mie Inouye

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

AbstractAntinomies of Organizing This dissertation theorizes a problem that attends all attempts to form or deepen democracy, namely, the problem of democratic transitions. People are shaped as political subjects by their participation in the institutions that govern their lives; their analyses of society, their self-understandings, and their political capacities are determined in large part by their participation in the state, the family, the workplace, and the market. When these institutions are oppressive, they may undermine participants’ capacities to engage in political action, to recognize and identify the sources of their oppression, and to self-govern. They may also undermine their sense …

Imagining A Crisis: Human-Environmental Relations In North And South American Law And Literature, Joseph Hamilton Oct 2022

Imagining A Crisis: Human-Environmental Relations In North And South American Law And Literature, Joseph Hamilton

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation is about the creation of a new environmental imagination. Under the pressure of ecological crisis, dominant ways of distinguishing nature and society have faltered, and struggles for environmental justice have articulated demands for a biocentric, anti-colonial approach to environmental governance. I show how such an ideological transition might be accomplished in the areas of law and literature, two crucial sources of new environmental worldviews and norms. My focus is on novels and jurisprudence that deal with ongoing environmental struggles: in the United States West, I look to William Vollmann’s The Dying Grass (2015), Leslie Marmon Silko’s Almanac of …

Investigation Of Various Organocatalytic Modes In Asymmetric Transformations: Controlling Different Elements Of Chirality, Sooyun Choi Oct 2022

Investigation Of Various Organocatalytic Modes In Asymmetric Transformations: Controlling Different Elements Of Chirality, Sooyun Choi

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

The ubiquity of stereogenic elements both found in nature and encountered in our daily lives has necessitated the control of chirality in chemical synthesis. This dissertation describes the study of Brønsted acidic, Lewis basic and anion-binding catalysis, all moderated within organic chiral scaffolds to control different elements of chirality, including diastereoisomerism, point chirality and atropisomerism. In Chapter 2, BINOL and peptidic phosphoric acids were evaluated in the development of an atroposelective catalytic cyclodehydration to afford 1,2,4-triazoles, obtained with up to 88:12 er. The enantioenriched products obtained via chiral phosphoric acid catalysis were recrystallized and isolated as enantiopure samples, demonstrating the first …

The Ambassadors: Indigenous Democracy And American Monarchy After The War Of 1812, Zachary Conn Oct 2022

The Ambassadors: Indigenous Democracy And American Monarchy After The War Of 1812, Zachary Conn

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation investigates sites of state activity in the early United States which have received far less attention from historians than executive mansions, legislative halls, courtrooms, military outposts, or overseas embassies: the numerous embassies the federal government maintained on, or adjacent to, lands belonging to North America’s sovereign Indigenous polities. At the helm of each of these embassies, known as Indian agencies, sat a presidentially appointed ambassador known as the Indian agent. I argue that Indian agents were monarchical officers within a republican system, compelled to follow diplomatic scripts originating in the centuries of contact between European monarchies and Indigenous …

Virtue Signals: Narrative, Self-Transformation, And Behavioral Exemplarity In Xv-Century Italian Renaissance Humanist Biography In Poland And Ukraine, Michael Thomas Lo Piano Oct 2022

Virtue Signals: Narrative, Self-Transformation, And Behavioral Exemplarity In Xv-Century Italian Renaissance Humanist Biography In Poland And Ukraine, Michael Thomas Lo Piano

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation approaches the question which follows: who was the first Renaissance humanist in the Polish Crown Lands? As such, it attempts to reconcile the scholarly debate across a number of linguistic traditions regarding the identity and origin of the humanist movement in East Central Europe. It principally focuses on the Tuscan humanist Filippo Buonaccorsi (Callimachus Experiens) and his biography of Archbishop Grzegorz of Sanok entitled the Vita et mores Gregorii Sanocei. It examines the literary structure and form of the biography to assess Buonaccorsi’s claims regarding the origins of humanism in the Polish Crown Lands and evaluates these claims …

Bachahs, Murats, And ShāKhs: The Culture Of Same-Sex Desire In Afghanistan, Ali Abdi Oct 2022

Bachahs, Murats, And ShāKhs: The Culture Of Same-Sex Desire In Afghanistan, Ali Abdi

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation is an introduction to the culture of same-sex desire in Afghanistan and aims at understanding how (non-normative) gender and sexuality materialize in everyday social relations in Kabul. I conducted ethnographic fieldwork in Kabul (and, for a much shorter period, in Bamyan and Mazar-i-Sharif) between 2016 and 2021. The main population with whom I worked were a group of male-born, non-masculine dancers and sex-workers who used murat for self-identification, a term they had borrowed from the argot of hijras/khwaja siras in Pakistan. By examining the formation of the queer subjectivity of murats, I suggest that the sex/gender world in …

Beyond The Inclosure Schema, Michael Burton Oct 2022

Beyond The Inclosure Schema, Michael Burton

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

The purpose of the inclosure schema is to reveal uniform structure in many paradoxes. Arguably, if it is successful, these paradoxes all require uniform solutions---a deep result. This dissertation explores the frontiers of inclosure, going beyond the schema in three ways. First, the philosophical project beyond the inclosure schema, the inclosure project, is examined. In particular, an account of the nonformal relation of correspondence between a paradox and an instance of the inclosure schema is given, with the Liar-like paradoxes chosen as test cases. Second, Curry's paradox, a paradox supposedly beyond the schema's reach, is argued to require a solution …

The Book Of Forgetting: Oblivion And Erasure In Late Medieval England, Clara Wild Oct 2022

The Book Of Forgetting: Oblivion And Erasure In Late Medieval England, Clara Wild

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Over the past few decades, the role of memory in medieval societies and texts has beendetailed by numerous scholars. Forgetting has received much less attention. This project investigates positive portrayals of forgetfulness in medieval texts from fourteenth and fifteenth century England. These texts range from devotional texts such as The Cloud of Unknowing to romances such as Ywain. Although very different in aims and audience, these texts all contain moments in which forgetting rather than remembering is desired. Through these diverse texts, I seek to demonstrate some of the different functions and forms of forgetting. Whether in the mechanics of …
