Penicillin Allergy And Hypersensitivity Fever, Michael Joseph Chusid Jan 1970

Penicillin Allergy And Hypersensitivity Fever, Michael Joseph Chusid

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

[From the Summary] Rabbits immunized to benzylpenicillin G were found to develop circulating anti-benzylpenicillin antibodies. After immunization, challenge of these animals with intravenous aqueous penicillin was ineffective in eliciting fever. However, intravenous challenge with a penicillin-rabbit serum protein conjugate led to typical hypersensitivity fevers which were roughly correlated in magnitude with titers of benzylpenicillin antibody. Febrile tolerance developed after one or two challenges with the conjugate. This form of hypersensitivity appeared to be transferable with plasma of immunized donors to normal rabbits. Finally, blood leukocytes of immunized rabbits incubated with penicillin-protected conjugate and hypersensitive serum released pyrogen in vitro while …

Metabolic Acidosis And Respiratory Compensation In Uremia During Hemodialysis, Robert D. Gilbert

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

[From the Introduction] In chronic renal insufficiency one of the products of metabolism which accumulates in the body is the hydrogen ion. The phosphoric, sulfuric, and organic acids usually eliminated in the urine accumulate. The respiratory system can and does decrease the hydrogen ion content of the body by decreasing the amount of carbonic acid present. The accumulating hydrogen ions also react with various bases throughout the body. The net result of metabolic production, respiratory elimination, and body buffering is reflected in the blood as chronic, partially compensated, metabolic acidosis. As expected the carbonic acid and block buffer concentrations are …

Mass Transport Induced By Wave Motion, Norden E. Huang Jan 1970

Mass Transport Induced By Wave Motion, Norden E. Huang

Journal of Marine Research

The problem of mass transport induced by waves is re-examined. Under the usual boundary-layer assumptions, the whole field is divided into three regions: surface-boundary layers, bottom-boundary layers, and the inviscid interior. Then, by considering Reynolds stress in the boundary layers, an expression of the mass-transport velocity in the viscous fluid is derived....

Sediment Budget In A Deep-Sea Core From The Central Equatorial Pacific, G. Ross Heath, Theodore C. Moore Jr., B. L.K. Somayajulu, David S. Cronan

Journal of Marine Research

Stratigraphic, mineralogic, chemical, and geochronologic measurements on a core from 8°20'N, 153°W show that sediment has been accumulating at a rate of 160 g/cm2/106 years. Of this, 125 g is "fresh" Quaternary sediment while the remainder is lower and middle Tertiary material eroded from nearby outcrops....

Fine-Sediment Dispersal In The Gulf Of San Miguel, Western Gulf Of Panama: A Reconnaissance, Donald J.P. Swift, R. Gordon Pirie

Journal of Marine Research

The Gulf of San Miguel, 30 km wide at its mouth and extending 40 km inland, is the estuary of river systems that drain eastern Panama. The Gulf consists of a central scour channel up to 36 m deep, flanked by semicircular bays. The tide has a range of up to 7 m, and maximum surface tidal currents average 200 cm/sec on the flood tide and 230 cm/sec on the ebb tide....

The Distribution Of Mesopelagic Fishes In The Equatorial And Western North Atlantic Ocean, Richard H. Backus, James E. Craddock, Richard L. Haedrich, David L. Shores

Journal of Marine Research

Examination of about 290 midwater trawl hauls made to a depth of 1000 m in the equatorial and western North Atlantic Ocean from 1961 to 1968 suggests that at least 10 physical boundaries determine the ranges of mesopelagic fishes. The boundaries delimit six pelagic regions----the Slope Water Region, the Northern Sargasso Sea, the Southern Sargasso Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea, and the Amazonian Region----and partly delimit four others----the Eastern Gyre and the Labrador, Lesser Antillean, and Guinean regions....

The Decay And Stability Of Internal Wave Modes In A Multisheeted Thermocline, Bryan Johns, Michael J. Cross Jan 1970

The Decay And Stability Of Internal Wave Modes In A Multisheeted Thermocline, Bryan Johns, Michael J. Cross

Journal of Marine Research

Internal wave motions are considered in a thermocline that consists of thin sheets across which there are abrupt changes in the density. These sheets are separated by homogeneous layers of water in which there is turbulent mixing. Investigations have been undertaken to determine the dependence of both the rate of energy dissipation and the dynamical stability upon the number of sheets in the thermocline....

A New Genus And Species Of Osmylidae (Neuroptera) From Chile And Argentina, With A Discussion Of Planipennian Genitalic Homologies, Phillip A. Adams Dec 1969

A New Genus And Species Of Osmylidae (Neuroptera) From Chile And Argentina, With A Discussion Of Planipennian Genitalic Homologies, Phillip A. Adams

Postilla

Phymatosmylus, a new genus of Stenosmylinae, is proposed for the new species Phymatosmylus caprorum. The genus is morphologically primitive in the position of the medial fork of the forewing, and in the partially free eighth abdominal tergite of the male. Osmylid female genitalia are prepared for examination by the customary clearing in KOH and staining in chlorazol black E, but removal of the internal structures from the abdomen, following cutting around the genital opening, makes details more visible than when examined in situ, as previously. The male gonarcus-mediuncus complex of Planipennia is probably derived from fused parameres, as in some …

Occlusion In Docodon (Mammalia, Docodonta), Farish A. Jenkins Jr. Nov 1969

Occlusion In Docodon (Mammalia, Docodonta), Farish A. Jenkins Jr.

Postilla

The pattern of molar occlusion in the Late Jurassic mammal genus Docodon was determined by "mapping" the wear facets on all known upper and lower dentitions. The coincidence of lower and upper molar wear is evidence that the proposed occlusal pattern is correct. The lingual halves of the upper molars occlude in the lower intermolar basins formed by the adjacent halves of lower molars. The buccal halves of upper molars pass buccally to the lower molar row. The disposition of opposing cusps and crests, and the verticality of most wear facets, rieveals that molar function was primarily shearing rather than …

Gigantopithecus (Pongidae, Hominoidea) A New Species From North India, E. L. Simons, S. R.K. Chopra

Postilla

A nearly complete mandible of Gigantopithecus representing a new species, Gigantopithecus bilaspurensis, is described. The specimen lacks incisors, left P4 and the posterior portions of both rami. Even so, it is the most complete Pre-Pleistocene hominoid mandible ever found in the Indian subcontinent. Found in the Dhok Pathan beds northwest of Haritalyangar, India, it is of middle Pliocene age. It is also the most complete higher primate mandible of its age known from any site in the world. In various ways the new specimen resembles species of Australopithecus, Ramapithecus and Dryopithecus more than does the specialized Chinese Pleistocene species Gigantopithecus …
