Tuba, A Novel Protein Containing Bin/Amphiphysin/Rvs And Dbl Homology Domains, Links Dynamin To Regulation Of The Actin Cytoskeleton, Marco Antonio Del Valle Salazar
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Tuba is a novel scaffold protein that functions to bring together dynamin with components of the actin cytoskeleton. It is concentrated at synapses in brain and binds dynamin selectively through four N-terminal Src homology-3 (SH3) domains. Tuba binds a variety of actin regulatory proteins, including N-WASP, CR16, WAVE1, WIRE, PIR121, NAP1, and Ena/VASP proteins, via a C-terminal SH3 domain. Direct binding partners include N-WASP and Ena/VASP proteins. Forced targeting of the C-terminal SH3 domain to the mitochondrial surface can promote accumulation of F-actin around mitochondria. A Dbl homology domain present in the middle of Tuba upstream of a Bin/amphiphysin/Rvs (BAR) …

Household Reaction To Changes In Housing Wealth, Robert J. Shiller
Household Reaction To Changes In Housing Wealth, Robert J. Shiller
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
It is widely claimed that housing wealth, as well as stock prices, have an impact on consumption and hence on aggregate economic activity. This paper presents a broad overview of the issues that arise in evaluating this claim in the context of recent research in behavioral economics. Particular attention is paid to a model of the response of consumption to wealth components produced by Christopher Carroll [2004].

Schumpeterian Profits In The American Economy: Theory And Measurement, William D. Nordhaus
Schumpeterian Profits In The American Economy: Theory And Measurement, William D. Nordhaus
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
The present study examines the importance of Schumpeterian profits in the United States economy. Schumpeterian profits are defined as those profits that arise when firms are able to appropriate the returns from innovative activity. We first show the underlying equations for Schumpeterian profits. We then estimate the value of these profits for the non-farm business economy. We conclude that only a miniscule fraction of the social returns from technological advances over the 1948-2001 period was captured by producers, indicating that most of the benefits of technological change are passed on to consumers rather than captured by producers.

A Quantilogram Approach To Evaluating Directional Predictability, Oliver B. Linton, Yoon-Jae Whang
A Quantilogram Approach To Evaluating Directional Predictability, Oliver B. Linton, Yoon-Jae Whang
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
In this note we propose a simple method of measuring directional predictability and testing for the hypothesis that a given time series has no directional predictability. The test is based on the correlogram of quantile hits. We provide the distribution theory needed to conduct inference, propose some model free upper bound critical values, and apply our methods to stock index return data. The empirical results suggests some directional predictability in returns especially in mid range quantiles like 5%-10%.

Three Strikes And You’Re Out: Reply To Cooper And Willis, Ricardo J. Caballero, Eduardo Engel
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Cooper and Willis (2003) is the latest in a sequence of criticisms of our methodology for estimating aggregate nonlinearities when microeconomic adjustment is lumpy. Their case is based on “reproducing” our main findings using artificial data generated by a model where microeconomic agents face quadratic adjustment costs. That is, they supposedly find our results where they should not be found. The three claims on which they base their case are incorrect. Their mistakes range from misinterpreting their own simulation results to failing to understand the context in which our procedures should be applied. They also claim that our approach assumes …

Smoothed Empirical Likelihood Methods For Quantile Regression Models, Yoon-Jae Whang
Smoothed Empirical Likelihood Methods For Quantile Regression Models, Yoon-Jae Whang
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
This paper considers an empirical likelihood method to estimate the parameters of the quantile regression (QR) models and to construct confidence regions that are accurate in finite samples. To achieve the higher-order refinements, we smooth the estimating equations for the empirical likelihood. We show that the smoothed empirical likelihood (SEL) estimator is first-order asymptotically equivalent to the standard QR estimator and establish that confidence regions based on the smoothed empirical likelihood ratio have coverage errors of order n –1 and may be Bartlett-corrected to produce regions with an error of order n –2 , where n denotes the sample size. …

Using Subspace Methods For Estimating Arma Models For Multivariate Time Series With Conditionally Heteroskedastic Innovations, Dietmar Bauer
Using Subspace Methods For Estimating Arma Models For Multivariate Time Series With Conditionally Heteroskedastic Innovations, Dietmar Bauer
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
This paper deals with the estimation of linear dynamic models of the ARMA type for the conditional mean for time series with conditionally heteroskedastic innovation process widely used in modelling financial time series. Estimation is performed using subspace methods which are known to have computational advantages as compared to prediction error methods based on criterion minimization. These advantages are especially strong for high dimensional time series. The subspace methods are shown to provide consistent estimators. Moreover asymptotic equivalence to prediction error estimators in terms of the asymptotic variance is proved. Also order estimation techniques are proposed and analyzed. The estimators …

Anchisaurus Polyzelus (Hitchcock): The Smallest Known Sauropod Dinosaur And The Evolution Of Gigantism Among Sauropodomorph Dinosaurs, Adam M. Yates
Postilla
A review of the type and referred specimens of Anchisaurus polyzelus (Hitchcock) and Ammosaurus major Marsh, from the Early Jurassic Portland Formation (Hartford Basin, Newark Supergroup), indicates that the latter is a junior synonym of the former. The material displays derived similarities with sauropod dinosaurs that are not present in their sister group, the prosauropods. Cladistic analysis strongly supports the hypothesis that Anchisaurus polyzelus is the most basal known member of Sauropoda. Thus A. polyzelus becomes the smallest known sauropod. Optimization of femur length using square change parsimony indicates that the lineage leading to Neosauropoda underwent gradual and sustained size …

Respiration And Vertical Carbon Flux In The Gulf Of Maine Water Column, T. T. Packard, J. P. Christensen
Respiration And Vertical Carbon Flux In The Gulf Of Maine Water Column, T. T. Packard, J. P. Christensen
Journal of Marine Research
The transport of carbon from ocean surface waters to the deep sea is a critical factor in calculations of planetary carbon cycling and climate change. This vertical carbon flux can be calculated by integrating the vertical profile of the seawater respiration rate but is rarely done because measuring seawater respiration is so difficult. However, seawater respiratory oxygen consumption is the product of the combined activity of all the respiratory electron transfer systems in a seawater community of bacterioplankton, phytoplankton, and zooplankton. This respiratory electron transfer system (ETS) is the membrane bound enzymatic system that controls oxygen consumption and ATP production …

Influence Of Short-Term Variations In Food On Survival Of Crassostrea Gigas Larvae: A Modeling Study, Eric N. Powell, Eleanor A. Bochenek, John M. Klinck, Eileen E. Hofmann
Journal of Marine Research
A biochemically-based model was developed to simulate the growth, development, and metamorphosis of larvae of the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas. The model defines larvae in terms of their protein, lipid, carbohydrate, and ash content and includes variation in growth efficiency and egg quality to better simulate cohort population dynamics. Changes in tissue composition occur as the larva grows and in response to the biochemical composition of the food. The premise behind this modeling study was that certain periods of larval life are more critical than others with respect to the availability of food and that food quality is as …

Adhesive-Based Selection By A Tentacle-Feeding Polychaete For Particle Size, Shape And Bacterial Coating In Silt And Sand, Ruben A. Guieb, Peter A. Jumars, Robert F. L. Self
Journal of Marine Research
We tested particle selection by a surface deposit-feeding, tentaculate spionid polychaete, Pseudopolydora kempi japonica Imajima and Hartman. In experiments with peroxide-cleaned, sizegraded but otherwise natural silts and sands, individual worms showed peak preference for particles 80-99 μm in diameter, compared with previous (Self and Jumars, 1988) documentation of peak preference for particles of 7 μm in experiments conducted with plastic and glass beads. These results imply that microtektites will not in general be good tracers of mixing of mineral grains of comparable size. Animals exhibited statistically significant but not marked differences in size selectivity for subrounded versus subangular grain shapes; …
Representativeness Of Meridional Hydrographic Sections In The Western South Atlantic, A. M. Thurnherr, K. G. Speer
Representativeness Of Meridional Hydrographic Sections In The Western South Atlantic, A. M. Thurnherr, K. G. Speer
Journal of Marine Research
Many studies of the oceanic circulation are based on data collected during quasi-synoptic hydrographic surveys. After spatial averaging, to filter out the effects of mesoscale variability, it is often explicitly or implicitly assumed that the synoptic hydrographic gradients are representative of a quasi-steady "mean" state. Climatological tracer fields and float data at the depth of the North Atlantic Deep Water in the western South Atlantic (Brazil Basin) support the notion of a quasi-steady mean circulation characterized by alternating bands of primarily zonal flow with meridional scales of several hundreds of km. Visually, the mean circulation appears to dominate three samples …
