Identification And Inference In First-Price Auctions With Risk Averse Bidders And Selective Entry, Xiaohong Chen, Matthew Gentry, Tong Li, Jingfeng Lu Aug 2020

Identification And Inference In First-Price Auctions With Risk Averse Bidders And Selective Entry, Xiaohong Chen, Matthew Gentry, Tong Li, Jingfeng Lu

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We study identification and inference in first-price auctions with risk averse bidders and selective entry, building on a flexible entry and bidding framework we call the Affiliated Signal with Risk Aversion (AS-RA) model. Assuming that the econometrician observes either exogenous variation in the number of potential bidders (N) or a continuous instrument (z) shifting opportunity costs of entry, we provide a sharp characterization of the nonparametric restrictions implied by equilibrium bidding. Given variation in either competition or costs, this characterization implies that risk neutrality is nonparametrically testable in the sense that if bidders are strictly risk averse, then no risk …

Using Color Doppler Ultrasound To Promote Exercise In Adults With Peripheral Artery Disease, Sarah Fittro Aug 2020

Using Color Doppler Ultrasound To Promote Exercise In Adults With Peripheral Artery Disease, Sarah Fittro

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Peripheral artery disease impacts greater than 200 million people worldwide and is the third leading cause of atherosclerotic vascular morbidity. The early stages of the disease are ideally treated behaviorally with exercise. However, there is poor exercise adherence due to fear of pain, poor perceived control over the disease, low motivation, and lack of education surrounding the diagnosis. Imaging has been used to change exercise behaviors among patients with other diseases, such as coronary artery disease. This study will test whether allowing participants to see ultrasound images of their vasculature in response to exercise-associated claudication pain will increase adherence to …

Videogame Intervention For Improved Control Of Type 1 Diabetes In Adolescents, Zachary Gibson Aug 2020

Videogame Intervention For Improved Control Of Type 1 Diabetes In Adolescents, Zachary Gibson

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Type 1 diabetes is a metabolic disease characterized by an inability to produce insulin, leading to hyperglycemia and other serious complications. Type 1 diabetes can be managed with exogenous insulin and careful dietary monitoring. However, adolescents with type 1 diabetes often have difficulty adhering to optimal treatment regimens, resulting in poorer diabetic control than patients in any other age group. In this study, we will test the efficacy of a serious videogame for increasing adherence to effective treatment regimens. We hypothesize that this intervention will lead to a significant reduction in glycosylated hemoglobin A1c, the standard assessment of diabetic control. …

Aerobic Exercise: An Adjunctive Therapy For Buprenorphine/Naloxone Retention In Opioid Use Disorder, Timothy Fong Aug 2020

Aerobic Exercise: An Adjunctive Therapy For Buprenorphine/Naloxone Retention In Opioid Use Disorder, Timothy Fong

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Opioid agonist treatment has been shown to reduce mortality, comorbid infections, and opioid cravings in patients with opioid use disorder. However, patient long-term retention on opioid agonist treatment is low and hindered by neurobiological and physiological changes caused by chronic opioid use, such as increased baseline noradrenaline and hyperalgesia. Some of these changes have been shown to be reversible or preventable with aerobic exercise. In this randomized clinical trial, we will determine whether an outpatient, adjunctive, aerobic exercise program designed around personal preferences can improve the retention on opioid agonist treatment. We will randomize 270 study subjects initiated on buprenorphine …

Botulinum Injection In The Tensor Fasciae Latae As An Adjunct Treatment For Iliotibial Band Syndrome, J. Morgan Jones Aug 2020

Botulinum Injection In The Tensor Fasciae Latae As An Adjunct Treatment For Iliotibial Band Syndrome, J. Morgan Jones

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Iliotibial band syndrome is a highly prevalent and painful condition characterized by anterolateral knee pain from an inflamed iliotibial band, with the current standard of care being physical therapy. However, we lack sufficient adjunct treatment options for patients with refractory iliotibial band syndrome who fail physical therapy. This study will evaluate the efficacy and safety of using botulinum toxin type A injections into the tensor fasciae latae as an adjunct therapy for patients with refractory iliotibial band syndrome. With all patients receiving the same physical therapy treatment, we randomized patients to the control group of saline injection and to the …

Consistent Misspecification Testing In Spatial Autoregressive Models, Jungyoon Lee, Peter C. B. Phillips, Francesca Rossi Aug 2020

Consistent Misspecification Testing In Spatial Autoregressive Models, Jungyoon Lee, Peter C. B. Phillips, Francesca Rossi

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Spatial autoregressive (SAR) and related models offer flexible yet parsimonious ways to model spatial or network interaction. SAR specifications typically rely on a particular parametric functional form and an exogenous choice of the so-called spatial weight matrix with only limited guidance from theory in making these specifications. The choice of a SAR model over other alternatives, such as spatial Durbin (SD) or spatial lagged X (SLX) models, is often arbitrary, raising issues of potential specification error. To address such issues, this paper develops an omnibus specification test within the SAR framework that can detect general forms of misspecification including that …

Diagnosing Housing Fever With An Econometric Thermometer, Shuping Shi, Peter C. B. Phillips Aug 2020

Diagnosing Housing Fever With An Econometric Thermometer, Shuping Shi, Peter C. B. Phillips

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Housing fever is a popular term to describe an overheated housing market or housing price bubble. Like other financial asset bubbles, housing fever can inflict harm on the real economy, as indeed the US housing bubble did in the period following 2006 leading up to the general financial crisis and great recession. One contribution that econometricians can make to minimize the harm created by a housing bubble is to provide a quantitative `thermometer’ for diagnosing ongoing housing fever. Early diagnosis can enable prompt and effective policy action that reduces long term damage to the real economy. This paper provides a …

When Bias Contributes To Variance: True Limit Theory In Functional Coefficient Cointegrating Regression, Peter C. B. Phillips, Ying Wang Aug 2020

When Bias Contributes To Variance: True Limit Theory In Functional Coefficient Cointegrating Regression, Peter C. B. Phillips, Ying Wang

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Limit distribution theory in the econometric literature for functional coefficient cointegrating (FCC) regression is shown to be incorrect in important ways, influencing rates of convergence, distributional properties, and practical work. In FCC regression the cointegrating coefficient vector \beta(.) is a function of a covariate z_t. The true limit distribution of the local level kernel estimator of \beta(.) is shown to have multiple forms, each form depending on the bandwidth rate in relation to the sample size n and with an optimal convergence rate of n^{3/4} which is achieved by letting the bandwidth have order 1/n^{1/2}.when z_t is scalar. Unlike stationary …

High-Dimensional Vars With Common Factors, Ke Miao, Peter C.B. Phillips, Liangjun Su Aug 2020

High-Dimensional Vars With Common Factors, Ke Miao, Peter C.B. Phillips, Liangjun Su

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper studies high-dimensional vector autoregressions (VARs) augmented with common factors that allow for strong cross section dependence. Models of this type provide a convenient mechanism for accommodating the interconnectedness and temporal co-variability that are often present in large dimensional systems. We propose an `1-nuclear-norm regularized estimator and derive non-asymptotic upper bounds for the estimation errors as well as large sample asymptotics for the estimates. A singular value thresholding procedure is used to determine the correct number of factors with probability approaching one. Both the LASSO estimator and the conservative LASSO estimator are employed to improve estimation precision. The conservative …

Doxastic Feel Like (That), Aarohi Srivastava Aug 2020

Doxastic Feel Like (That), Aarohi Srivastava

Yale Working Papers in Grammatical Diversity

Doxastic feel like is used to convey a belief or opinion, similar to think:

(1) I feel like your drawing is better than mine.

Doxastic feel like is an intriguing topic of study due to the potential for microsyntactic variation, along with the thick web of linguistic prejudice surrounding this construction. Doxastic feel like is primarily associated with stereotypes regarding age, gender, and intelligence. A survey was conduced to measure participants of diverse demographic backgrounds in their acceptability of feel like in different contexts. Overall, respondents were found to have high acceptability of this construction. In addition, respondents were …

Utilizing Patient-Reported Outcome Measures In The Management Of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Jennifer Elizabeth Farren Jul 2020

Utilizing Patient-Reported Outcome Measures In The Management Of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Jennifer Elizabeth Farren

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Inflammatory bowel disease, a chronic relapsing-remitting disorder, affects three million adults in the United States. One of the main therapeutic goals in patients with inflammatory bowel disease is mucosal healing, measured by endoscopy, an invasive procedure that does not always reflect patient symptomatology. To address these limitations, clinicians have developed patient-reported outcome measures, questionnaires evaluating bowel symptoms and quality of life. However, the clinical utility of these patient-reported outcome measures and their correlation to objective markers of inflammation is unclear. We will determine the efficacy of using a patient-reported outcome measure to inform treatment for inflammatory bowel disease. In a …

Exparel Compared To Standard Bupivacaine For Postoperative Analgesia Following Lumbar Spine Fusion, Eric Ka Chun Lau Jul 2020

Exparel Compared To Standard Bupivacaine For Postoperative Analgesia Following Lumbar Spine Fusion, Eric Ka Chun Lau

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Inadequate postoperative pain management following spinal surgery contributes to delayed mobilization and chronic pain. The current standard of care following spinal surgery consists of opiates and anesthetics to target multiple pain pathways. However, opiates are limited by their significant adverse effects and anesthetics are limited by their short duration of delivery. One approach that may overcome these limitations is liposomal or lipid-encapsulated drug formulations, which have been shown to extend the duration of drug delivery to target tissues. In this study, we will compare adjunctive opioid consumption in a randomized controlled trial of patients undergoing elective posterior lumbar spinal surgery …

Chemsex Screening And Intervention Training For Urban Primary Care Providers, Jona Tanguay Jul 2020

Chemsex Screening And Intervention Training For Urban Primary Care Providers, Jona Tanguay

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Chemsex, defined as the use of drugs before or during sex to enhance and facilitate the experience, is increasingly prevalent in urban populations of men who have sex with men. Chemsex is associated with higher risks of sexually transmitted infections including HIV, and it has negative effects on mental health and productivity. However, chemsex is under- or un-addressed in most primary care practices, and chemsex users rarely present to specialists in addiction medicine. We hypothesize that an integrative, multimodal training program for urban primary care providers in chemsex identification and harm reduction will increase the proportion of male patients screened …

Effect Of Prehospital Echocardiography In Cardiac Arrest To Augment Chest Compression Positioning, Alexandra Zhakov Jul 2020

Effect Of Prehospital Echocardiography In Cardiac Arrest To Augment Chest Compression Positioning, Alexandra Zhakov

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Cardiac arrest, characterized by the loss of mechanical activity of the heart, is a life-threatening medical condition that is almost always fatal if not treated immediately. The protocols for cardiopulmonary resuscitation used by emergency medical personnel during out-of-hospital cardiac arrests do not account for cardiac and thoracic anatomic variation when positioning chest compressions. This study will examine whether evaluating chest compression efficacy using transthoracic echocardiography in the prehospital setting will increase the rates of survival to hospital admission in adults suffering atraumatic out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. We will recruit paramedics from four emergency medical services agencies to participate in a prospective …
