The Associations Between Circadian Genetic Factors And Cancer Survival, Bingqing Li Jan 2021

The Associations Between Circadian Genetic Factors And Cancer Survival, Bingqing Li

Public Health Theses

The circadian rhythm controls a range of important biological behaviors with a 24-hour cycle. The mammalian biological clock is a layered network of vibrators with a master clock locating in the neurons of suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) in the hypothalamus and a set of core and related circadian genes. Several lines of evidence from previous studies suggested the relationships between tumorigenesis and circadian rhythm disruption. However, the effects of circadian genetic factors in cancer survival remains uncertain. Therefore, it is important to review and explore the circadian genetic factors which might be linked to cancer survival. This paper aimed to evaluate …

Gene-Gene Interactions Contributing To Asthma Susceptibility, An Exploration Using Uk Biobank Dataset, Yuyuan Lin Jan 2021

Gene-Gene Interactions Contributing To Asthma Susceptibility, An Exploration Using Uk Biobank Dataset, Yuyuan Lin

Public Health Theses

Background: Previous studies have attempted to identify gene-gene interactions for asthma. However, most of these studies suffered from lack of replication or insufficient statistical power. In this study, we aimed to explore the gene-gene interactions affecting asthma susceptibility and tried to replicate the results. Both the discovery and replication datasets were nested in UK Biobank data.

Methods: Nested case-control design was used. In the discovery analysis (N= 306,859, cases = 35,483, controls = 271,376), Univariate genome-wide association analysis was performed to prioritize loci for the interaction analysis. Pairwise search for epistasis was conducted among 5,389 SNPs. Replication of the top …

(De)Constructing The Grocery Store: An Ethnographic Examination Of Spatial Characteristics And Their Implications For Social Inclusion, Madeline Hoai Chau Nguyen Jan 2021

(De)Constructing The Grocery Store: An Ethnographic Examination Of Spatial Characteristics And Their Implications For Social Inclusion, Madeline Hoai Chau Nguyen

Public Health Theses

I acknowledge that this research was conducted on land stolen from the Mattabesic, Paugusett, and Schaghticoke tribes which is currently occupied by a Western colonial power.

This study examines the physical characteristics of the interior of New Haven grocery stores and how these are designed to socially include or exclude racial minorities. Drawing upon critical race theory and using ethnographic research methods, I analyze similarities and differences amongst selected independent American and Asian grocery stores and how they communicate their cultural values to various social groups. Even if it is not explicit, white supremacist values are embedded in these spaces. …

The Role Of Histone Demethylase Kdm6a In Mouse Coronavirus Infection, Sonam Patel Jan 2021

The Role Of Histone Demethylase Kdm6a In Mouse Coronavirus Infection, Sonam Patel

Public Health Theses

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the causative agent of acute respiratory coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a disease that erupted into a global pandemic in March of 2020.2 Recently, a genome wide CRISPR screen was performed on SARS-lineage coronaviruses and two additional recombinant viruses; the screen revealed host genes essential to coronavirus pathogenesis and entry.7 The screen identified KDM6A, a histone demethylase, as an important pro-viral gene.7 Building upon this observation, in this thesis, I explore the role of Kdm6a in murine hepatitis virus (MHV), a type of mouse coronavirus. MHV is the prototypical model for studying SARS-CoV-2 …

An Agenda-Setting Report: Biome Monitoring For Human Health, Peter Roumeliotis Jan 2021

An Agenda-Setting Report: Biome Monitoring For Human Health, Peter Roumeliotis

Public Health Theses

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic and the increasing frequency with which zoonotic diseases of pandemic potential have emerged in recent decades, it is vital to seek new methods of preventing disease outbreaks before they occur. Novel information age technologies have the potential to change the game for infectious disease outbreak monitoring. This paper addresses the overall opportunity that exists for biome surveillance as a means for health monitoring, particularly the way that the domains of technological and biological sciences can unite to prevent the next pandemic before it gets a chance to take hold. This report outlines the numerous …

Sex Difference In Identification Of Predictive Tumor Tissue Metabolites Associated With Colorectal Cancer Prognosis, Xinyi Shen Jan 2021

Sex Difference In Identification Of Predictive Tumor Tissue Metabolites Associated With Colorectal Cancer Prognosis, Xinyi Shen

Public Health Theses

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third major cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States in 2020. Sex-related differences in CRC stage, prognosis, and metabolism have become increasingly popular in cancer research. Males have poorer survival for CRC, but females with right-sided colon cancer (RCC) have aberrant metabolism correlated with poor survival. Delay in knowing the condition of CRC in female patients would result in poor prognosis, which could be avoided by predicting prognostic outcomes. Random Survival Forest (RSF) is ideal for exploration and making predictions using metabolomics data with high dimension, strong collinearity, and heterogeneity, which CPH models could …

Identification Of Genetic Factors For Metabolically Healthy Obese And Metabolically Obese Normal-Weight, Junli Zhu Jan 2021

Identification Of Genetic Factors For Metabolically Healthy Obese And Metabolically Obese Normal-Weight, Junli Zhu

Public Health Theses

Though obesity is typically associated with metabolic dysfunction and cardiometabolic diseases, there are both obese individuals who have favorable metabolic profiles (metabolically healthy obese; MHO) and individuals who present obesity alterations despite their normal weight (metabolically obese normal weight; MONW). Genetic studies suggest that there is a genetic component underlying these phenotypes. However, previous research has been restricted by the use of the candidate gene approach, limited choice of metabolic indicators, and low statistical power. A genome-wide association (GWA) study that examines both MHO and MONW in a single large-scale population cohort is necessary to uncover the genetic determinants of …

Patient-To-Nurse Sexual Harassment, Erin Frances Micale Jan 2021

Patient-To-Nurse Sexual Harassment, Erin Frances Micale

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

Patient to nurse sexual harassment is an issue that can have significant effects on nurses physical and mental health, occupational function, and patient outcomes. It is an under-researched and often unaddressed issue, leaving many nurses unsure of what sexual harassment by a patient is and how to respond to it. This paper reviews the literature related to patient to nurse sexual harassment and the development and effectiveness of a webinar on recognizing, preventing, intervening, and coping with patient to nurse sexual harassment. The webinar is a two-hour educational program that covers topics related to what sexual harassment is, risk assessment …

Evaluation Of A Nursing-Led Telephonic Self-Management Program For Patients With Copd On Health Care Utilization, Esther Pavlovsky Jan 2021

Evaluation Of A Nursing-Led Telephonic Self-Management Program For Patients With Copd On Health Care Utilization, Esther Pavlovsky

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

In 2010, it was estimated that the U.S. spent approximately $50 billion to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Nurse-driven interventions are essential in value-based care. The purpose of this quality improvement (QI) project is to reduce the number of preventable COPD-related admissions and emergency department (ER) visits by implementing a telephonic nurse-led evidence-based COPD self-management program. A 50-patient pilot has been initiated. A pre-and-post test will be used to evaluate the effect on preventable hospitalizations and ER visits. If the outcomes of the program are unfavorable, a root cause analysis will be conducted to obtain nursing feedback on perceived …

Preventing Recurrent Falls In Elderly Home Bound Health Plan Members, Debra Sylvester Jan 2021

Preventing Recurrent Falls In Elderly Home Bound Health Plan Members, Debra Sylvester

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

Falls have become a major public health concern. As the population ages, the prevalence of falls among older adults continues to increase, as does mortality and morbidity. Evidence-based assessment and intervention tools are widely available, though in practice, providers experience challenges utilizing them. Homebound older adults are at particular risk since they have mobility and transportation barriers that prevent access to community fall screening and primary care sites. This project focused on the provision of fall assessment, interventions, and coordination of fall-prevention services for community-dwelling, homebound older adults covered by a managed health plan. A standardized fall assessment and intervention …

When The Great Equalizer Shuts Down: Schools, Peers, And Parents In Pandemic Time, Francesco Agostinelli, Matthias Doepke, Giuseppe Sorrenti, Fabrizio Zilibotti

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

What are the effects of school closures during the Covid-19 pandemic on children’s education? Online education is an imperfect substitute for in-person learning, particularly for children from low-income families. Peer effects also change: schools allow children from different socio-economic backgrounds to mix together, and this effect is lost when schools are closed. Another factor is the response of parents, some of whom compensate for the changed environment through their own efforts, while others are unable to do so. We examine the interaction of these factors with the aid of a structural model of skill formation. We find that school closures …

Review Of Advocacy And Awareness For Archivists, Elizabeth D. James Dec 2020

Review Of Advocacy And Awareness For Archivists, Elizabeth D. James

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

Advocacy and Awareness for Archivists is at once a practical guide and a call to action to consistently communicate the work and impact of archives at the local, regional, and national levels. As an expansion of the Archival Fundamentals Series, the book places the work of advocacy as being central to the archives profession. However, it neglects to incorporate contemporary archival concerns related to power dynamics and inequity when planning and conducting an advocacy effort.

Warfare And Welcome: Practicality And Qur’Ānic Hierarchy In Ibāḍī Muslims’ Jurisprudential Rulings On Music, Bradford J. Garvey Nov 2020

Warfare And Welcome: Practicality And Qur’Ānic Hierarchy In Ibāḍī Muslims’ Jurisprudential Rulings On Music, Bradford J. Garvey

Yale Journal of Music & Religion

While much ink has been spilled by musicologists on the legal standing of music in Islamic jurisprudential scholarship, few scholars have offered as comprehensive a view as Lois Ibsen Al-Faruqi. Thirty-five years after her major works on this issue, this article seeks to reassess her model of musical legitimacy within Muslim scholarship. Al-Faruqi places Qur’ānic recitation at the apex of a unidirectional continuum of sound art, with genres less similar to the recitation of the Qur’ān located progressively further away from it. Based on fieldwork in the Sultanate of Oman in 2015-17 and engaging with recent reinvigorations on the anthropological …

Open Banking: Credit Market Competition When Borrowers Own The Data, Zhiguo He, Jing Huang, Jidong Zhou Nov 2020

Open Banking: Credit Market Competition When Borrowers Own The Data, Zhiguo He, Jing Huang, Jidong Zhou

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Open banking facilitates data sharing consented by customers who generate the data, with a regulatory goal of promoting competition between traditional banks and challenger fintech entrants. We study lending market competition when sharing banks’ customer data enables better borrower screening or targeting by fintech lenders. Open banking could make the entire financial industry better off yet leave all borrowers worse off, even if borrowers could choose whether to share their data. We highlight the importance of equilibrium credit quality inference from borrowers’ endogenous sign-up decisions. When data sharing triggers privacy concerns by facilitating exploitative targeted loans, the equilibrium sign-up population …
