Towards Modeling Pilot-Cockpit Interactions To Identify Interface Design Deficiencies Early In System Development, Sanidhya Jain, Karen Marais Jan 2025

Towards Modeling Pilot-Cockpit Interactions To Identify Interface Design Deficiencies Early In System Development, Sanidhya Jain, Karen Marais

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2025

This paper introduces the Pilot-Cockpit Interaction Model (PCIM), a human-taskinterfaceframework built on flight tasks and micro-interactions (perception, comprehension, and projection). PCIM links cockpit design components (aspects, requirements, settings) with pilot behavior to systematically evaluate interfaceeffectiveness for different flight tasks. We demonstrate PCIM’s application through acase study of helmet-mounted display symbology, showing how interface deficiencyidentification and design changes can enhance pilot comprehension and projection. ThePCIM enables early-stage identification of design deficiencies, offering a structured,human-centered approach to improving interface design and pilot performance. Futurework will expand the model’s scope and integrate quantifiable metrics to evaluate pilotresponses across broader system and interaction levels.

A course was developed in a collegiate aviation program to teach transport categoryaircraft systems using virtual reality (VR) as a supplemental teaching tool. To betterexplore the experiences and viability of using VR in this course, students from theinaugural class were interviewed at the conclusion of the course. Feedback from thestudents were used to improve the course, as well as to understand the benefits, drawbacks, and limitations of using VR to teach aircraft systems. Students found that VRenhanced their learning experience and reinforced the concepts learned in class; however, they also noted that overcoming software limitations is an area for improvement.

Creating Scenarios For The Evaluation Of Situational Awareness, Niklas P. Schulmeyer, Nicoletta Fala Jan 2025

Creating Scenarios For The Evaluation Of Situational Awareness, Niklas P. Schulmeyer, Nicoletta Fala

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2025

Situational Awareness (SA) is critical for safe task performance in aviation, yettraining and evaluating situational awareness remain challenging, often relying ontheoretical and subjective methods. Most current situational awarenessassessments are either intrusive or lack objectivity. Typically, situationalawareness training is lecture-based and focused on single pilot resourcemanagement. To change the training paradigm and address the lack of objectivity,we propose a structured framework for scenario-based situational awarenesstraining and evaluation. Using a toolbox of scenario elements—such as systemfailures or environmental factors—generates scenarios with specific difficultylevels aligned with cognitive engineering assessment dimensions. These scenariosare then tested in simulators to assess SA. Our toolbox is informed …

Enhancing Pilot Decision-Making In Mountainous Terrain Using Ui System For Cfit Prevention, Aayush Bhattarai, Luis Jose Alarcon-Aneiva, Nicoletta Fala

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2025

The glass cockpit system's evolution offers enhanced situational awareness andintegrated real-time data, but also introduces significant challenges. Differences inthe cognitive processing abilities of various pilots, especially when critical alertsare delivered at the last moment, often lead to inconsistent interpretation of theinformation. This issue is acute in complex multitasking environments such asoperations in mountainous terrain, where rapid weather changes, deceptive visuals, and intensified cognitive load compromise the pilots' ability to detect and respondto threats. This paper proposes a “reduced information processing strategy”originally applied in ship navigation displays to simplify the user interface andimprove decision-making in aviation. The user interface is rooted in …

Mental Visualization In Aviation Training: Propensity, Measurement, & Implications For Narrative In Extended Reality, Nelly Dragu, Juliana Reis, Nathan A. Sonnenfeld, Blake Nguyen, Florian G. Jentsch

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2025

We are currently investigating the role of mental imagery and narrative structureto leverage episodic memory for training, particularly in extended reality (XR).We hypothesize that (a) learners’ propensity for visualization and (b) the use ofinstructional storytelling contributes to more meaningful and effective trainingexperiences. Episodic memory may be particularly helpful for encoding andretrieving the place and timing of actions in a procedure sequence. Furthermore,we believe that learners’ propensity for mental visualization may underpin part ofthis relationship. Here, we describe results from an exploratory factor analysisthat focused on factor loadings across a battery of measures of learners’immersive tendencies, visuospatial abilities, imagination, and mental …

Effects Of Performance Pressure On Learning During Recurrent Pilot Training, Andrea Sepulcri, M. M. Van Paassen, Annemarie Landman, Olaf Stroosma, Max Mulder

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2025

Recurrent training helps pilots maintain or upgrade their flying skills, however, performance pressure during training may reduce the effectiveness of recurrent training. To study the effects of performance pressure on pilot behaviour and learning, pilots (n = 17) holding an airline transport pilot licence and type rating for large multiengine aircraft were invited to a simulator experiment where they would learn a new autopilot system. The low-pressure group flew a series of training scenarios under no performance pressure whereas the high-pressure group flew the same training scenarios with prompts designed to induce performance pressure and raise their anxiety. The high-pressure …

Oscillation And Amplitude Based Unsupervised Flight Maneuver Scoring: A Data-Driven Pilot Expertise Measure, Luis Jose Alarcon-Aneiva, Nicoletta Fala

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2025

Objective and scalable pilot assessment is crucial due to rising training demandsand subjective evaluation limitations. Existing data-driven methods often requireextensive data labelling and focus on maneuver classification over executionquality. Addressing the need for interpretable, label-independent proficiencymetrics, this paper introduces an unsupervised pipeline to quantify roll controlsmoothness during turns from X-Plane logs. The methodology features adaptivetrend slicing for segmentation, zero-phase Butterworth filtering (0.6-4.5 Hz) toisolate roll oscillation during turns, and extraction of time domain descriptors(RMS, Peak to Peak, and crest factor). After aggregation and outlier removal, viaisolation forest, K-means clustering identified distinct “smooth” vs “oscillatory”performance groups with high statistical validity. Principal …

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2025

Understanding resilient performance in routine operations has emerged as a key conceptin enhancing aviation safety and creating a culture of continuous learning. To enablepilots to learn from all operations, positive behaviors during routine operations must beobserved, measured, trained, and evaluated. However, no systematic analysis has beenperformed to assess the current state of support for learning from all operations in Part121 carriers. In this project, a framework for gap analysis was developed, semistructuredinterviews with subject matter experts in safety and training were conducted, the current state was determined, the ideal state was determined, and a matrix to closethe gaps was developed. Results …

Flight Safety Data Storytelling: Continuous Learning From What Went Right, Barth Baron Jr., Melissa Peterson Jan 2025

Flight Safety Data Storytelling: Continuous Learning From What Went Right, Barth Baron Jr., Melissa Peterson

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2025

The anticipated increase in air traffic, airspace complexity, and safety datavolume inspired the development of an In-time Aviation Safety ManagementSystem (IASMS). Evolving from the legacy Safety Management System (SMS),IASMS will use machine learning (ML) to improve current risk management andsafety assurance methodologies, predict future threats, and reduce analysis andresponse times. We propose applying the IASMS concept to directly supportskilled performance in real-time with an interactive safety visualization tool forpilots. This tool would analyze disparate data sets to reveal latent operationalthreats and provide examples of skilled performance adaptations. Pilots wouldaccess tailored ML-enabled predictive data narratives through a user-centeredinterface. Challenges with using …

Exploring Mechanisms Underlying Time-On-Task Effects In Decision-Making Tasks, Jarean Carson, Preston Menke, Joshua Wong, Afra Moharrami Nasirabadi, Scott Watamaniuk, Ion Juvina, Tehran Davis, William Aue, Emma Macneil

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2025

Sustained vigilance and complex decision-making are necessary skills for operatorsof both manned and unmanned aerial vehicles. Cognitive fatigue due to time ontask may reduce cognitive resources, producing performance decrements. Weperformed a secondary analysis of a data set from 68 participants who performedthree tasks related to target verification (TV), complex decisions, and imagerecognition (IR) in three consecutive days. Both TV and IR tasks were vigilancetasks, separated by the complex decision task, and both showed an expectedperformance decrement (decreasing hit rate) consistent with fatigue. Surprisingly, both also showed performance improvements (decreasing response time andincreasing correct rejections) inconsistent with fatigue. We propose that anincreasing …

Toward A Relational Theory For Hr Function Research, Jinhwan Jo, Clint Chadwick

Human Resource Management Faculty Publications

In this conceptual review, we suggest that investigations of the HR function’s strategic value should encompass the relational activities between the HR function and its multiple stakeholders and go beyond the existence or the effectiveness of the HR function in implementing HR practices. Specifically, we aim to answer the questions of (1) who are the critical stakeholders of the HR function? (2) what relational activities should occur between the HR function and each stakeholder for the effective management of human capital? and (3) how can these relational activities contribute to the effectiveness and performance of the organization? Building from HRM …

Mapping User-Centered Design Evaluation Methods To System Development Stages Applied To Air Traffic Management Technology Development, Amy L. Alexander, Tom G. Reynolds, Catherine Dulude

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2025

User involvement in software prototype evaluation is often constrained by availableresources. To optimize user engagement in design development, we compiled aframework mapping user-centered design evaluation methods to system developmentphases as a function of fidelity; namely, utilizing lower-fidelity/lower resourceburden methods (e.g., cognitive walkthroughs) at early prototype developmentphases, and higher-fidelity/higher resource burden methods (e.g., field testing) duringlater phases. The benefits of this approach lie in the efficient utilization of time andresources during iterative product development, focusing on incorporating the “right”evaluation methods at the “right” times. We utilized this framework to guideprototype development and evaluation efforts in a program sponsored by NAVCANADA in …

Facilitating Passenger Acceptance Of Evtol: Management Of Expectation And Experience, Adam Schachner, Jocelyn Keillor, Gregory Craig

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2025

For passengers accustomed to commercial fixed-wing flight, electric vertical takeoffand landing aircraft (eVTOLs) will represent a novel form of air travel. Thepassenger experience of urban air mobility (UAM) eVTOLs will encompass newsounds, vibrations, motions, and a visual field flooded with close-up views of theurban canyon. Research on passenger acceptance has largely relied on text-basedquestionnaires. However, acceptance will be influenced by how experiencecompares to expectations and the extent to which discomfort or, in the worst case, distress, is experienced. The existing passenger discomfort literature focuseslargely on the impact of noise and vibration. Compared with traditionalcommercial flight, passengers may experience greater range, intensity, …

The long-standing goal of creating a comprehensive, multi-purpose knowledge resource, reminiscent of the 1984 Cyc project, still persists in AI. Despite the success of knowledge resources like WordNet, ConceptNet, Wolfram|Alpha and other commercial knowledge graphs, verifiable, general-purpose, widely available sources of knowledge remain a critical deficiency in AI infrastructure. Large language models struggle due to knowledge gaps; robotic planning lacks necessary world knowledge; and the detection of factually false information relies heavily on human expertise. What kind of knowledge resource is most needed in AI today? How can modern technology shape its development and evaluation? A recent AAAI workshop gathered …

Extraction Of Patient Subtypes Using Llm Generated Knowledge Graphs Integrated With A Transformer Architecture, Benjamin Holmes, Cogan Shimizu

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Extracting patient subpopulations (clinically relevant cohorts of individuals who share overlapping symptoms, risk factors, or diagnostic criteria) from unstructured medical notes is an ongoing challenge due to the variability of clinical language and the complex nature of patient conditions. We demonstrate a pipeline that combines named entity recognition (NER), transformer embeddings, guided dimensionality reduction, and LLM-mediated knowledge graph integration to enhance patient extraction. The approach begins with NER using the UMLS metathesaurus [1] to extract clinical terms, followed by transformation into vector embeddings using a biomedical transformer. These embeddings are augmented with structured knowledge graph representations generated through an LLM-driven …

The men, women, and children forced into slavery in the Atlantic world came from diverse African societies with long histories of political, economic, and cultural development. They were taken from the trading centers of the Hausa city-states, the farming and artisanal communities of Senegambia, the Kongo and Mbundu polities of West Central Africa, and many other regions. They carried with them agricultural expertise, metallurgical skills, medical knowledge, religious traditions, and oral histories that helped sustain communities in the face of displacement and enslavement.Enslavement did not erase this intellectual and cultural inheritance, nor did it render its victims passive numbers in …

A Single Pilot Operation (SPO) environment was constructed using a flightsimulator, and comparisons were made primarily from the perspective ofworkload between SPO and SPO where support by ground-based PilotMonitoring (GPM) was available. The experiment was conducted using aMitsubishi SpaceJet M90 flight simulator, with two pilots participating. Asexpected, it was found that SPO generally results in higher workload compared to2PO, and that GPM support can alleviate some of the workload during SPO.Factors such as the invisibility of GPM and the anxiety caused by GPM notreceiving sufficient information, as well as the increase in procedures, were foundto impact workload.
