Beyond Silence: A Review- Exploring Sensory Intelligence, Perception And Adaptive Behaviour In Plants, Taranisen Panda, Nirlipta Mishra, Shaik Rahimuddin, Bikram Pradhan, Rajballav Mohanty
Journal of Bioresource Management
Plants, traditionally viewed as passive organisms, exhibit sensory and adaptive abilities that challenge conventional notions of plant biology. All organisms evolve ways to sense and interact with their surroundings, and plants, although lacking eyes, ears, or brains, perceive the world in sophisticated ways. Despite lacking a nervous system and other features typically associated with animals, plants can see, smell, hear, feel, learn, remember, and act similarly to animals. This review examines how plants perceive and respond to their environment using mechanisms analogous to vision, hearing, smell, taste, and touch, adjusting their morphology, physiology, and phenotype accordingly. Drawing from plant physiology, …

Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) aliphatic polymers however efficiently biodegradable, still pose a contradiction with the principles of green chemistry. Use of bacterial strains capable of degrading synthetic plastics for the production of biopolymers i.e., PHAs may aid in reduction of plastic pollution. Bacterial strains PWA; Bacillus subtilis (MH142143), PWF; Bacillus tequilensis (MH142145), and PWG; Bacillus safensis (MH142146) were grown on waste shredded PET and PET flakes. Highest bioconversion of PET to PHA was observed using PET flakes. Strain PWF produced 40.47 % (0.815 g/L) and 31.80 % (0.626 g/L) PHA using PET flakes and shredded PET at 48 h, respectively. Whereas highest …

Best Integrated Writing
This paper is a comprehensive approach based on research, to a problem whose implications are the function of society itself. The trends, statistics, and problems are linked with an essay’s style that considers the situations of different types of people, from different social classes, professions and roles. The result is a scientific and human text –at the same time– full of evidence and suggested solutions for a better coexistence in a city that was a world leader in air transport. By comparing public transportation with that of other cities, through solid successive arguments, Nathan achieves an objective, convincing text, which …

Best Integrated Writing
In this short story, Sam Fletcher gives a glimpse into the world of Army Engineers. Through the lens of an outsider’s perspective, this story showcases the sometimes-tenuous relationship that accompanies working with ally forces during the global war on terror. While this story is a work of fiction, it mirrors the very real connections formed by exposure to danger and shared hardship. It is dedicated to the brave Engineers Fletcher served with who risked their lives to ensure the safety of others.

Do Systems Exist?: A Conversation, Adam Walls, John M. Flach
Do Systems Exist?: A Conversation, Adam Walls, John M. Flach
Books Authored by Wright State Faculty/Staff
“Do Systems Exist? A conversation” is a refreshing and ambitious exploration of systems thinking, framed as a cross-disciplinary dialogue between Adam Walls, a business consultant, and John Flach, a cognitive systems theorist. The book resists the conventions of both academic textbooks and business manuals, opting instead for a conversational format that invites readers to think alongside the authors, rather than simply absorb pre-packaged conclusions.
This strength, however, may also be a limitation for some readers. Those expecting a structured framework or a step-by-step methodology for applying systems thinking in organizations may find themselves adrift in what feels more like a …

Review On Biological Management Of Bactrocera Zonata Through Pathogenic Activity Of Beauveria Bassiana, Sana Ullah, Hafiz Muhammad Sajid Ali, Syed Husnain Kumail Naqvi, Muhammad Ziaullah, Farhan Ali, Sana Sarfaraz, Mamoona Kanwal
Journal of Bioresource Management
Bactrocera zonata is the destructive pest of peach, mango, and banana by causing significant economic losses. It reduces fruit quality which directly causes decline in export of these economical fruits. Many management strategies were carried to suppress the population of this invasive pest. The use of chemical insecticides in the orchard for control of B. zonata is restricted because insecticides cause several complications in fruit health and makes fruits unfit for human consumption. Due these drawbacks of chemical control, Biological control strategies are preferred for better management of B. zonata. Entomopathogenic fungi are potential bio-control agent against many insect …

Methods for interpreting complex feature interactions in educational assessment data remain a critical challenge, with traditional statistical approaches often creating barriers to accessibility and interpretability. We introduce the Feature Manifold Transformer (FMT), a novel machine learning approach that leverages dimensionality reduction, representation learning, and transformer architectures to visualize and interpret feature relationships in categorical data. Using the Concept Inventory of Natural Selection (CINS) and Concept Assessment of Natural Selection (CANS) datasets as testbeds, we demonstrate the FMT’s ability to capture subtle relationships between student demographics and response patterns. Our methodology enables both global and local pattern analysis, providing interpretable visualizations …

Designing Safe Highly Automated Human-Machine Systems Using An Stpa-Based Approach: A Case Study, Justin Poh, Nancy G. Leveson, Robert R. Copeland
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2025
Because modern aircraft are increasingly reliant on automation, it is essential thatthese aircraft include appropriate human-automation interactions to ensure safeflight. However, it can be challenging to design these interactions using currentmethods. This paper demonstrates how a design approach based on Systems-Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA) enables more in-depth consideration ofhuman factors engineering and system safety when designing the pilot-automationarchitecture for an advanced rotorcraft concept. First, STPA is used to derive thecontrol responsibilities needed to safely operate the aircraft. Then, alternativeways to allocate those control responsibilities to the human pilot or automationare compared to identify safety and human factors-related benefits and tradeoffsto …

Air Traffic Control (ATC) trainees at the FAA Academy and developmentalcontrollers in the field often face dynamic and unexpected events in training, which may impact safe and effective human performance if certain vulnerabilitiesare not properly managed or mitigated. We integrate theory on self-regulatedworkplace training with a cognitive neuroscience perspective on attention touniquely examine the effects of surprise and stress on performance. Our near-termgoal is to demonstrate the viability of using physiological measures to predictperformance changes in a laboratory study of young adults learning a complexvideogame. We use a novel, event-marked and person-centric longitudinalapproach to the analysis of physiological variables to distinguish …
Leveraging System Definition For Human Factors Integration In The Uam Ecosystem; Cockpit Display For Autonomous Flight, Chang-Geun Oh
Leveraging System Definition For Human Factors Integration In The Uam Ecosystem; Cockpit Display For Autonomous Flight, Chang-Geun Oh
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2025
As UAM moves toward autonomy, human operators will remain essential—especially ininterpreting complex variables or managing system limitations. Cockpit displays act as a bridgebetween the pilot and multiple UAM ecosystem components, including navigation, traffic, weather, and diagnostics systems. This paper argues that defining each component’s inputs, outputs, services, and requests is a prerequisite for effective human-machine interface (HMI)design, particularly as information is often pre-processed before reaching the pilot. The initialgeneration of UAM systems is likely to adopt manual flight controls due to regulatoryconservatism, certification readiness, and the need for public trust. However, as full autonomybecomes viable, cockpit interfaces must evolve to support remote …

Investigating The Influence Of Factors On The Flight Training Performance Of Ab-Initio Pilots, Ismail Gevrek, Mebrure Itir Gevrek
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2025
Fatigue is a critical issue in aviation, particularly for ab-initio pilots undergoingmilitary flight training. This study investigates the impact of mental fatigue, training scheduling, environmental stressors, and biological needs on theperformance of 104 military ab-initio pilots. Using a comprehensive survey andadvanced statistical analyses, significant negative correlations were identifiedbetween performance and mental fatigue (r=−0.65, p<0.01) training scheduling(r=−0.60, p<0.01), environmental stressors (r=−0.52, p<0.01), and biologicalneeds (r=−0.48, p<0.05). The findings highlight the detrimental effects ofcumulative fatigue and stress on ab-initio pilot performance. Practicalimplications include the need for optimized training schedules, improved cockpitenvironments, and interventions targeting mental and physical resilience. Thisstudy underscores the importance of proactive fatigue management strategies toenhance safety and efficiency in military flight training.

Review Of Fatigue Micro-Mitigations For Application In Air Traffic Control: Benefits, Challenges, And Feasibility, John Kang, Ruth E. Propper, Michael Sawyer
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2025
Air traffic controllers (ATCs) are one of the primary drivers of safe and resilient operations in the National Airspace System. The FAA has implemented manylarge-scale fatigue mitigation strategies (e.g., scheduling policies, break time requirements, and time-on-position limits) to combat fatigue. Given the performance benefits related to managing fatigue, ATCs may also benefit from simple, practical fatigue interventions and that could improve job performance. This review targets ‘micro-mitigations,’ which we define as mitigations that maybe unobtrusive, can be quickly implemented, have a rapid impact, and are easy to engage. We explore the possible utility of five micro-mitigations to help minimize fatigue/improve alertness: …

Real-Time Synchronization Of Flight Simulation And Physiological Data Using Lab Streaming Layer: A Custom X-Plane Approach, Luis Jose Alarcon-Aneiva, Nicoletta Fala
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2025
Poor synchronization of physiological and flight data hinders human factors research by obscuring cause-effect relationships and requiring laborious manual alignment. We developed a custom X-Plane plugin which uses Lab Streaming Layer (LSL) for real-time synchronization to integrate flight data with simultaneously streamed ECG and eye-tracking signals. Our setup simplifies datacollection and ensures precise synchronization without manual intervention, reducing error and preprocessing time. This paper describes the system configuration, plugin, and advantages over conventional methods. Our approachenables accurate correlation between physiological responses and in-flight events, offering deeper insights into pilot performance and workload, resulting in apractical, reproducible method of simplifying multimodal data collection …

Two Tools For Analyzing Coordination Problems To Design For Distributed Work: A Case Study In Urban Air Mobility, Abhinay Paladugu, Abigail Post, Martijn Ijtsma
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2025
The design of a distributed work system can be framed as a set of dynamic coordination problems, where functions need to be developed for actors to synchronize their activities over time. For example, in envisioned Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) operations, coordination problems arise when operators need to synchronize responses with thebehavior of an autonomous aircraft that has lost its communication link. We present ananalysis of the dynamics of this specific coordination problem, showing how uncertaintyin the behavior of autonomous capabilities and the dynamic nature of UAS operationscan create challenges in synchronization. We combine the modeling and simulation framework Work Models that …
