Design Of A Novel Tissue Culture System To Subject Aortic Tissue To Multidirectional Bicuspid Aortic Valve Wall Shear Stress, Janet Liu Jan 2018

Design Of A Novel Tissue Culture System To Subject Aortic Tissue To Multidirectional Bicuspid Aortic Valve Wall Shear Stress, Janet Liu

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Blood vessels experience complex hemodynamics marked by three-dimensionality and pulsatility. Arterial endothelial cells interact with the characteristics of the fluid wall shear stress (WSS) to maintain homeostasis or promote disease states. In particular, the bicuspid aortic valve (BAV), a congenital heart valve anatomy consisting of two leaflets instead of three, is associated with aortic complications presumably promoted by hemodynamic abnormalities. While devices have been used to test this hypothesis, their capabilities are limited to the generation of time-varying WSS magnitude in one direction. However, the increased flow helicity generated by BAVs in the aorta is expected to result in increased …

A large area, square-gate Metal-Oxide/Insulator-Semiconductor (MOS or MIS) structured `Spatial Light Modulator' has been proposed for the Terahertz (THz) imaging at room temperature. This theoretical study has been done entirely by using the MATLAB platform. The 1D Poisson's equation has been solved iteratively by Euler's method with the exact Fermi-Dirac integral for n-doped Si-MOS and GaAs- MIS capacitors in deep accumulation mode. Free carrier density and the potential profile have been found for the degenerate case. The results have been compared with the analytical method, which is approximated by Boltzmann statistics, and clearly, show the difference between the degenerate case …

The Influence Of A Surface On Hysteresis Loops For Single-Domain Ferromagnetic Nanoparticles, Saad Alsari

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The influence of surface effects on a hysteresis loop for single domain, ferromagnetic nanoparticles was examined. Theoretical equations were derived to describe the magnetic behavior of the domains and a MATLAB program was used to solve them. M-H curves were calculated for the case when a magnetic field is applied in the favorable magnetization direction (easy axis). In contrast, the calculations show there were no hysteresis loops when the magnetic field was applied perpendicular to the easy axis. Our studies showed how parameters of the surface such as a associated with saturation magnetization near the surface of nanoparticles and Ks …

Microelectronic circuit is ubiquitous component of modern electrical devices. The increasing complexity and professionality of phases in microelectronic supply chain bring more global cooperation to integrated circuit (IC) production. Therefore, providing a secure environment for microelectronic circuit design does not ensure the integrity of the hardware since any participator of IC fabrication has the opportunity to implant a malicious alteration in original IC design. Especially overseas chip-fabrication is a vital potential threat for national defense products. In theory, anyone who has access to fabrication process can tamper with the original design, with the potential to change function, modify parametric properties …

Comparing Created And Natural Depressional Wetlands Through Trophic Analysis Of Macroinvertebrates, Shante N. Eisele

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Macroinvertebrates are important contributors to wetland ecosystems due to their role in decomposition, nutrient cycling, and as a food resource for other organisms. Several studies have analyzed the macroinvertebrate communities in created wetlands, but few have evaluated them in the context of trophic structure in both created and natural wetlands. The objective of this study is to better understand benthic macroinvertebrate community composition and trophic structure in created and natural wetlands. My central hypotheses were that macroinvertebrate communities in created wetlands would have (1) differing composition and (2) less complex trophic structure with shorter food-chain length compared to natural wetlands. …

Nanomaterial Charge-Dependent Platelet Activating Factor Receptor Agonism In Human Epidermal Cells, Shahryar Jamshed Qureshi

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Platelet Activating Factor (PAF) and its associated receptor, the PAF Receptor (PAFR), are important mediators of intercellular communication during an immune response. Once a physiological stimulus triggers an inflammatory response, epithelial, endothelial and immune cells synthesize and release PAF. PAF mediates the recruitment of immune cells, platelets, angiogenesis, expression of various genes, and increased PAF biosynthesis (Brown, 2006; Han, 2006; Whatley, 1988; Axelrod, 1988). In this study, we utilized HaCaT cells and a well characterized KB cell line derived from nasopharyngeal cells, which do not natively express the PAFR. KB cells had previously been transfected with a PAF receptor (KBP) …

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Finding bottlenecks and eliminating them to in-crease the overall flow of a network often appears in real world applications, such as production planning, factory layout, flowrelated physical approaches, and even cyber security. In many cases, several edges can form a bottleneck (cascaded bottlenecks). This work presents a visual analytics methodology to analyze these cascaded bottlenecks. The methodology consists of multiple steps: identification of bottlenecks, identification of potential improvements, communication of bottlenecks, interactive adaption of bottlenecks, and a feedback loop that allows users to adapt flow networks and their resulting bottlenecks until they are satisfied with the flow network configuration. LLC resonant converters are popular among resonant topologies due to their high efficiency and ability to achieve ZVS and ZCS for wide input range. LLC resonant converters are controlled by frequency modulation (FM), which makes converter difficult to optimize the system in terms of achieving efficient power conversion. FM technique also generate wide range of harmonics which leads to a wide sweep in operating frequency, which can run into regulatory EMI test limits and cause electromagnetic compatibility issues. The performance of LLC topology extends to their poor efficiency at lighter loads, due to constant high magnetization current. In order to …

High-lift low-pressure turbine blades produce significant losses at the junction with the endwall. The losses are caused by several complex three-dimensional vortical flow structures, which interact with the blade suction surface boundary layer. This study investigates the unsteady characteristics of these endwall flow structures on a highly loaded research profile and the adjacent endwall using surface-mounted hot-film sensors. Experiments were conducted in a low-speed linear cascade wind tunnel. The front-loaded blade profile was subjected to three different inlet conditions, consisting of two turbulence levels, and three incoming boundary layer thicknesses. Multiple surface-mounted hot-film sensors were installed throughout the passage. This …

Modern aircraft with nonlinear flight envelopes predominately utilize gain scheduled controllers to provide stability of flight. Using gain scheduled control techniques, nonlinear envelopes can be linearized into collections of linear systems that operate under various system dynamics. Linear controllers approximate the nonlinear response over setpoints of operating conditions which allow traditional linear theory to be applied to maintain stability. Techniques to prove linear stability are well understood and realized in control systems, but when controllers are switched, interpolation methods must be used. Interpolation is necessary as gain scheduled systems do not have foundational switching paradigms as part of their realization …

Mercury (Hg) is a global pollutant toxic to humans and wildlife. Monomethylmercury (MMHg) is a bioavailable compound that bioaccumulates and biomagnifies in food webs. Humans are primarily exposed to MMHg from seafood consumption (Sunderland 2007), and high quantities of the neurotoxin lead to reduced neurocognitive functioning in adults and the children of exposed mothers (Cohen et al. 2005, Yokoo et al. 2003). Negative effects from MMHg accumulation on the health of humans and wildlife requires a more complete understanding of the chemistry and microbiology driving Hg methylation in both marine and freshwater systems. This work focuses on water column distribution, …

Verifying Data-Oriented Gadgets In Binary Programs To Build Data-Only Exploits, Zachary David Sisco Jan 2018

Verifying Data-Oriented Gadgets In Binary Programs To Build Data-Only Exploits, Zachary David Sisco

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Data-Oriented Programming (DOP) is a data-only code-reuse exploit technique that "stitches" together sequences of instructions to alter a program's data flow to cause harm. DOP attacks are difficult to mitigate because they respect the legitimate control flow of a program and by-pass memory protection schemes such as Address Space Layout Randomization, Data Execution Prevention, and Control Flow Integrity. Techniques that describe how to build DOP payloads rely on a program's source code. This research explores the feasibility of constructing DOP exploits without source code-that is, using only binary representations of programs. The lack of semantic and type information introduces difficulties …

The current study examined how over- and underestimations of ability progress with increasing experience completing a task. Prior research has demonstrated inconsistent effects when investigating the relationship between self-efficacy and performance at the within-person level of analysis, often theorizing distinct effects of over- versus underestimating one's ability level. Thus, the current study investigated the discrepancy between self-efficacy, one's belief in their capability to accomplish some task, and actual performance levels. The current study replicated findings that self-efficacy converges on performance over time and extended prior research by demonstrating the rate of convergence might be affected by the size of initial …

Due to image reconstruction process of all image capturing methods, image data is inherently affected by uncertainty. This is caused by the underlying image reconstruction model, that is not capable to map all physical properties in its entirety. In order to be aware of these effects, image uncertainty needs to be quantified and propagated along the entire image processing pipeline. In classical image processing methodologies, pre-processing algorithms do not consider this information. Therefore, this paper presents an uncertainty-aware image pre-processing paradigm, that is aware of the input image’s uncertainty and propagates it trough the entire pipeline. To accomplish this, we …

Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) is an often occurring problem caused by narrowed veins. With this type of disease, mostly the legs receive an insufficient supply of blood to sustain their functions. This can result in an amputation of extremities or strokes. In order to quantify the risks, doctors onsult a classification table which is based on the pain response of a patient. This classification is subjective and does not indicate the exact origin of the PAD symptoms. Resulting from this, complications can occur unprompted. We present the first results for an image-based indicator assisting medical doctors in estimating the stage …
