Extensions To The Ontology Design Pattern Representation Language, Quinn Hirt, Cogan Shimizu, Pascal Hitzler Jan 2019

Extensions To The Ontology Design Pattern Representation Language, Quinn Hirt, Cogan Shimizu, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Recently, modular ontology modeling has become a more popular ontology engineering paradigm. With it, the need for additional metadata associated with ontology design patterns has grown. The Ontology Pattern Language (OPLa) was developed to facilitate annotating ontologies with useful metadata, as well as supporting tooling infrastructure. In this paper, we detail three extensions to OPLa into a reorganized namespace: OPLa-core, containing the original annotations; OPLa-SD, for use in detailing schema diagrams; and OPLa-CP, an adaptation of the content-pattern annotation schema.

Modl: A Modular Ontology Design Library, Cogan Shimizu, Quinn Hirt, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Pattern-based, modular ontologies have several beneficial properties that lend themselves to FAIR data practices, especially as it pertains to Interoperability and Reusability. However, developing such ontologies has a high upfront cost, e.g. reusing a pattern is predicated upon being aware of its existence in the first place. Thus, to help overcome these barriers, we have developed MODL: a modular ontology design library. MODL is a curated collection of well-documented ontology design patterns, drawn from a wide variety of interdisciplinary use-cases. In this paper we present MODL as a useful resource for the development of high-quality, modular ontologies, discuss its use, …

Design And Manipulation Of A Power-Generating System With High-Temperature Fuel Cells For Hypersonic Applications, Jack Randolph Chalker Jan 2019

Design And Manipulation Of A Power-Generating System With High-Temperature Fuel Cells For Hypersonic Applications, Jack Randolph Chalker

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Current hypersonic vehicles tend to be incapable of producing onboard power with traditional generators due to their use of supersonic combusting ramjets (scramjets). Because of this, they seek additional energy sources for supporting advanced electronics or other auxiliary power-dependent devices while requiring elaborate thermal management systems to combat temperatures exceeding 700ºC. The incorporation of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFCs) stacks is an efficient solution, capable of generating large quantities of power through the use of natural fuel sources at high temperatures. Developments in this thesis include the design, construction, and support of a system operating at hypersonic-environment conditions with a …

The low-pressure turbine is an important component of a gas turbine engine, powering the low-pressure spool which provides the bulk of the thrust in medium- and high-bypass engines. It is also a significant fraction of the engine weight and complexity as it can comprise up to a third of the total engine weight. One way to drastically reduce the weight of the low-pressure turbine is to utilize high lift blades. To advance high-lift technology, the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) designed the L2F blade profile, which was implemented in the linear cascade at AFRL/RQT’s low speed wind tunnel facility. The …

Similarly, it is also a challenge to train medical professionals with both the technical and communication skills required in their practices. The recent emergence of VR technologies shines the light on improving the current training practices. In this thesis research, I will look at the development and application of VR-based immersive training games for two particular cases: 1. Post hand surgery rehab; and, 2. Training for Social determinants of health (SDOH) …

Retail Facility Layout Considering Shopper Path And Door Placement, Sagarkumar D. Hirpara Jan 2019

Retail Facility Layout Considering Shopper Path And Door Placement, Sagarkumar D. Hirpara

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The physical design of a retail store is known to influence the attitude and behavior of shoppers, in turn affecting the store’s performance. While literature in retail design has alluded to the impact of changes in department placements on impulse revenue, it has not accounted for the changes in the path of a shopper due to such modifications. Shopper path changes can alter a department’s visibility to the shoppers as they pass by, and such visibility eventually impacts that department’s impulse revenue. To address this gap, we study the retail facility layout problem by accounting for changes in the shopper …

Pitting is a rolling contact fatigue phenomenon commonly observed in mechanical rolling elements, such as gears and bearings. In case of gear contacts, pitting usually takes place in the dedendum region, where both sliding and contact load are high. In this study, a model is developed to predict surface breaking crack formation fatigue lives, including both nucleation and propagation stages, for spur gear contacts operating under mixed elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) condition. The model utilizes a gear load distribution model for tooth contact Analysis. A mixed EHL formulation is implemented to evaluate the surface normal pressure and tangential shear, incorporating the …

Mitochondria-Dependent Cellular Toxicity Of Α-Synuclein Modeled In Yeast, Rajalakshmi Santhanakrishnan

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Parkinson’s disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disease. This disease is caused by the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons, leading to debilitating motor symptoms and early mortality. The protein α-synuclein (α-syn), encoded by SNCA, misfolds and forms inclusions in Parkinson’s disease brains. When α-syn is overexpressed in yeast, it causes cellular toxicity and an increased number of aggregates, recapitulating the toxic phenotypes observed in humans and animal models. Yeast models are a powerful tool to perform high-throughput overexpression screening to identify modifiers of α-syn toxicity. α-syn causes mitochondrial dysfunction by inhibiting complex I and inducing mitochondrial fragmentation. Prior screening of …

A method to register THz and visible images of cutaneous burn wounds and to calibrate THz image data is presented. Images of partial and full thickness burn wounds in 9 rats were collected over 435 mins. = 7.25 hours following burn induction. A two-step process was developed to reference the unknown structure of THz imaging contrast to the known structure and the features present in visible images of the injury. This process enabled the demarcation of a wound center for each THz image, independent of THz contrast. Threshold based segmentation enabled the automated identification of air (0% reflectivity), brass (100% …

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

KIAA1549-BRAF is the most frequently identified genetic mutation in sporadic pilocytic astrocytoma (PA), creating a fusion BRAF (f-BRAF) protein with increased BRAF activity. Fusion-BRAF-expressing neural stem cells (NSCs) exhibit increased cell growth and can generate glioma-like lesions following injection into the cerebella of naïve mice. Increased Iba1+ monocyte (microglia) infiltration is associated with murine f-BRAF-expressing NSC-induced glioma-like lesion formation, suggesting that f-BRAF-expressing NSCs attract microglia to establish a microenvironment supportive of tumorigenesis. Herein, we identify Ccl2 as the chemokine produced by f-BRAF-expressing NSCs, which is critical for creating a permissive stroma for gliomagenesis. In addition, f-BRAF regulation of Ccl2 production …

Adenovirus Co-Opts Neutrophilic Inflammation In Order To Enhance Entry Into Epithelial Cells, James Matthew Readler

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Human adenoviruses (AdV) are double-stranded DNA viruses that can cause a range of diseases. While AdV respiratory infections are often mild and self-limited, severe manifestations such as fulminant pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) are not uncommon. In order to identify potential modalities to treat AdV infections and potentially enhance the effectiveness of AdV vector delivery, a thorough mechanistic understanding of how AdV enters host cells is needed. Previous studies have revealed polarized epithelia, one of the primary targets for AdV respiratory infections, are highly resistant to AdV entry from the apical (luminal) surface. However, upon exposure to interleukin …

Quantification Of Optical Parameters Using Frequency Domain Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (Fd-Fnirs), Christopher W. Davies

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a non-invasive technique that uses near-infrared light and hemoglobin as the contrast to characterize tissue optical properties, namely optical absorption [] and scattering [′ ]. Through this characterization, it is possible to obtain information about the tissue’s oxygenated (HbO) and deoxygenated (Hb) hemoglobin concentrations and oxygen saturation which are important physiological markers for diagnosis and intervention monitoring. Many commercial devices use a continuous wave approach (CW-fNIRS), a technique that simply relies on intensity changes from a constant power laser to determine only relative changes in oxygenation. This is a significant limitation for clinical settings where …

The synthesis of N-heterocycle functionalized benzophenone-type monomers and their incorporation into poly(arylene ether ketone)s were explored. Two benzophenone derivatives, 2,4-difluorobenzophenone and 3,5-difluorobenzophenone, were successfully functionalized with a carbazole group, via a copper-catalyzed C-N coupling reaction. Structural characterization was provided by NMR spectroscopy, GC/MS, and elemental analysis. The monomers were covalently incorporated, at various molar ratios, into poly(arylene ether) systems by copolymerization with 4,4’-difluorodiphenylsulfone (DPS) and 4,4’-dihydroxydiphenyl ether (DPE), as well as 4,4’-difluorotriphenylphosphine oxide (dFTPPO) and DPE, via nucleophilic aromatic substitution (NAS) chemistry. Most polymeric materials synthesized provided sufficient molecular weights to cast durable films, and also possessed good thermal stability …

Operating room (OR) plays a crucial role in health care, contributing more than 50% of the hospital’s revenue and incurring over 35% of the hospital’s expense, ultimately determining the hospital’s profitability. Moreover, because the OR is a primary source of admissions, it is virtually impossible to streamline hospital‐wide workflow without first streamlining patient flow through the OR. Unfortunately, current OR scheduling practices often limit the utilization of OR, one of the most expensive resources in the health care industry, to around 60%. On the other hand, many patients have to wait an excessively long time before their surgeries can be …

In this work, downward-facing surfaces were fabricated in alloy 718 using laser powder bed fusion and investigated with surface characterization and axial fatigue testing. Coupons with downward-facing surfaces at 45°, 60°, and 75° and flat axial fatigue bars with as-built and machined holes were built. Both specimens were fabricated with three levels of downskin laser power and the coupons with three levels of downskin laser speed. Surface characterization showed roughness increased as the downward-facing angle decreased. Fatigue testing with digital image correlation showed localized …

Design And Implementation Of Periodic Unsteadiness Generator For Turbine Secondary Flow Studies, Nathan James Fletcher Jan 2019

Design And Implementation Of Periodic Unsteadiness Generator For Turbine Secondary Flow Studies, Nathan James Fletcher

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

A primary source of periodic unsteadiness in low-pressure turbines is the wakes shed from upstream blade rows due to the relative motion between adjacent stators and rotors. These periodic perturbations can affect boundary layer transition, secondary flow, and loss generation. In particular, for high-lift front-loaded blades, the secondary flowfield is characterized by strong three-dimensional vortical structures. It is important to understand how these flow features respond to periodic disturbances. A novel approach was taken to generate periodic unsteadiness which captures some of the physics of turbomachinery wakes. Using stationary pneumatic devices, pulsed jets were used to generate disturbances characterized by …

The development of the next-generation sequencing technology has enabled systems immunology researchers to conduct detailed immune repertoire analysis at the molecule level. Large sequence datasets (e.g., millions of sequences) are being collected to comprehensively understand how the immune system of a patient evolves over different stages of disease development. A recent study has shown that the hierarchical clustering (HC) algorithm gives the best results for B-cell clones analysis - an important type of immune repertoire sequencing (IR-Seq) analysis. However, due to the inherent complexity, the classical hierarchical clustering algorithm does not scale well to large sequence datasets. Surprisingly, no algorithms …
