In developing a concept of the universe at the elementary level many learning aids are utilized. Visual presentations, direct observations, experimentations and critical reading accompanied by discussions serve to enhance a child's understanding of a concept. Moreover, it is apparent that all elementary school children do not arrive at the same level of understanding of scientific phenomena. There are many children who do not respond effectively to experimentation and critical reading and thus must rely on direct observations and visual presentation in arriving at a lower level of conceptual development. Introduction

The configuration of biphenyl has been treated in numerous articles and reviews (1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 16, 22, 23). In particular the configuration of 2,2'-bridged biphenyl derivatives has obtained attention. The synthesis of an optically active 2,2'-three-carbon-atom-bridged biphenyl possessing an ultraviolet absorption maximum at 250 mμ has been reported by Iffland and Siegel (15). These properties require first, a non-planar configuration for the molecule and second, significant inter-ring conjugation as demonstrated by ultraviolet spectra.

Several 2,2'-three-atom-bridged biphenyls have been prepared by Ahmed and Hall (2, 3) in order to obtain some measure of their specific rotation. The use …

Introduction

The purpose of this research is to prepare the CIS and TRANS isomers of the 2, 3 and 4-methylcyclohecanecarboxylic acids and their 2-diethylaminoethyl esters.

This series of compounds is of interest because of the anti-tumor activity shown by some ethanolamine derivatives. The compounds to be prepared in this study represent modifications of these structures to determine if further investigation in this area is worthwhile. A pharmacological evaluation of these compounds will be made since many esters of amino alcohols have demonstrated pharmacological activity. In 1958 the Food Additives Amendment to the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act was adopted causing a great deal of concern on the part of producers of packaging material. Any ingredient of the package that might migrate or transfer to food contained in the package became, by definition, a food additive subject to regulation and prior approval of the Food and Drug Administration.

Other acts and regulations have been adopted since 1958 indicative of increasing concern by the Federal Government for consumer welfare. This activity can be expected to have far reaching effects on manufacturers who must depart from …

An Investigation Of Drift-Covered Environments Using The Shallow Reflection Seismic Method, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, Thomas Patrick Luby

Seismic work utilizing a six-channel analog seismograph and a hammer impact source successfully obtained coherent reflection events from horizon within the glacial overburden, from the drift-paleozoic interface, and from Paleozoic bedrock targets. Fieldwork was conducted in eight drift-covered environments where the drift thickness varied from 80 feet to greater than 500 feet. Factors that exerted a major control over the seismic response at each environment studied include the depth of the water table, the type of surface material underlying the shot point and geophone spread, and the use of single versus multiple geophones per channel. Teaching reading to the mentally retarded assumes a major portion of an institution's educational facilities and personnel. The considerable amount of time and effort that are devoted to this one aspect of the child's training reflect the vital character that reading instruction has for his occupational and psychological adjustment. Any increase in our knowledge of the factors and methods that play a role in the teaching process is desirable and much needed.

This problem was approached by making multiply handsheets in the laboratory with various equicaliper ply arrangements of bleached sulfite pulp and overissue news, testing these sheets under standard conditions, and analyzing the data.

The handsheets were made by passing two Noble and Wood formed fiber mats placed face to face through an unlocked wet press. After removal of a forming wire a third ply could be added, followed by a second wet pressing. Upon constructing the sheet in this manner final wet pressing was accomplished by passing the multiply sheet through the loaded wet press. Sheets so formed were dried …

The importance of the continuous-film forming properties of the polymer via fusion upon heating is second to none. Yasuda states that it depends on the probability of two particles coalescing upon the application of heat versus the acceleration of the rate of removal of the disperse medium from the coating. Naturally it would seem that excessive rates of drying would not permit the adhesive to fuse, but it may also alter the distribution of adhesive throughout the coating in either case. Many investigations have been conducted in the field of soil microbiology during the past.six decades. Most notable among the contributors is S. A. Waksman whose voluminous works have established many of the procedures used in microbial analyses of soil. Yet, the one fact that is foremost to any reviewer of the literature covering this field is that no standardization of techniques for soil analyses exists. The following presentation deals with one method used to estimate the number of bacteria and actinomycetes in soil.
