The scientific movement in education was well under way when Witmer established the Psychological Clinic at the University of Pennsylvania and began his work with children showing evidence of educational maladjustment. It is fortunate for mankind that Witmer had the versatility to set aside his laboratory experimentation in order to help a classroom teacher overcome a spelling difficulty of one of her pupils. The scientific movement in education had produced the first Psycho-Educational Clinic. New concepts were introduced into the theory and practice of education. These were precise observation, accurate description, and tested generalizations. These additions made educational changes possible …

The Problem

The purpose of this study is to determine whether or not the verbal output of first grade elementary school children is reduced when one of the participants in conversational communication has an articulation speech defect. A speech defect has long been thought to cause a reduction in the verbal output of the possessor of that speech defect. This present study seeks to determine whether or not an articulatory speech defect also reduces the verbal output of the normal speaking person with whom he is communicating.

Goldblatt and his associates (1934) were the first to show that persistent arterial hypertension could be produced by renal ischemia. They produced renal ischemia by two procedures which involved reduction of the blood supply to one or both kidneys by means of adjustable silver clamps and removal of the non-ischemic kidney where only one kidney was made ischemic. In one procedure the clamps were placed directly on the renal arteries. The second procedure produced renal ischemia indirectly by constriction of the abdominal aorta above and below the site of the origin of both renal arteries (1939). The adjustable silver …

This thesis is an exposition into the American radical right. It is the author's contention that expository writing has a role to play in thesis-writing, especially dealing with broad political problems such as the radical right movement.

Many observations have been made on the behavior in the field of the bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) and of other gallinaceous birds. Stoddard (1950) has described in some detail various aspects of bobwhite behavior. Stokes (1963) conducted a laboratory study on the agonistic and sexual behavior of the chukar partridge. This investigation was concerned with the microenvironment of the daytime resting places of cottontail rabbits (Sylvilagus floridanus) in southwestern Michigan. Many studies have been made of the habitat (Friley, 1955), cover (Hendrickson, 1938; Leopold, 1942; Linduska, 1947), food (Trippensee, 1938; Dice, 1945), and home ranges (Haugen, 1942) of cottontail rabbits. The purpose of this investigation was to search for possible correlations between various physical factors and the daytime activity and resting places of cottontails.

The objective of this thesis was to compare the coating properties of the English and domestic clays. Specifically, it was intended to note which set of clays excelled, if either, in the various properties tested. Furthermore, it would be observed from the results in which properties the primary clays (English) and the secondary clays (domestic) were in close agreement. The experimental work was designed to eliminate as many variables as possible with the exception of the type of clay used.

A new staining technique has been developed for the colorimetric separation of unbleached neutral sulfite semichemical fibers from other types of fibers. It involves the use of two reagents, a 2% solution by weight of p-nitroaniline in 3N HCl and Herzbergs stain. The former solution is applied to the fibers, the excess is removed, and Herzberg stain is applied. This process will produce an orange color on groundwood, a brownish green color on unbleached neutral sulfite semichemical fibers, and a color on chemical fibers and bleached neutral sulfite semichemical hardwood fibers that will vary from blue to deep purple, depending …

The operation is one of brush finishing, where a high-speed cylindrical bristle brush is employed continuously against a paper web in order to develop desirable surface properties. The principle involved is a simple low-pressure polishing action not unlike shining one’s shoes. The performance of this new method, however, is obscure due to the absence of published information on the subject in available literature.

This survey of literature concerning surface sizing has been undertaken in an effort to compile in one paper the importance of surface sizing on strength properties, particularly tensile and tear.

The use of starch in the modification of surface characteristics of a writing medium may actually be older than the art of paper manufacture itself. A considerable amount of literature on surface sizing showing the effect on surface improvements of the paper sheet is available, but very little work has been undertaken to study the effect of surface sizing on tensile and tear.
