Let us take each level of art, give an illustration or two from utopian literature and then see its relationship to the presence of violence or nonviolence within the social framework.

In addressing myself to this question of whether the arts could flourish in a nonviolent society, I would like, for the purposes of clarity and simplification, to restrict myself to a discussion of the relation of physical violence and the arts. The level of violence varies, however, and in some societies it is considerably less than others. The reasons for this variance are hard to ascertain; but, I suspect, those reasons are of crucial importance if we are to fathom this subject.

From this view of the work of certain selected major American artists, work clustered roughly around the years 1930, 1940, and 1950, it is apparent that the artist was affected by technology, and more often than not one of the results of this influence was violence in the art. The new humanist is primarily dedicated to the task of equipping his charges with the tools for developing their own mature value systems instead of absorbing ad nauseam then puking back a la Pavlov the various introjected value systems which American education has traditionally attempted to force on its nurselings. Education in a self-enhancing and life-enhancing manner rather than indoctrination for a cog's role in the corporate state, that is the task the new humanists set for themselves.

The lute song or "ayre" as it was usually spelled by its Elizabethan and early Jacobean composers was a type of English song whose melody was predominant and its accompaniment carefully composed. It was usually accompanied by the lute and often the viol doubled the bass line. The term "ayre" or "aire" was used by English writers of the seventeenth century in the sense of key or mode. The texture of the lute song was generally homophonic and much simpler than that of the polyphonic madrigal. Of course, lutenist-song composers like John Dowland and John Danyel often used all of …

Variance Analysis Of Basis Weight Variation On The Pilot Machine, Timothy A. Armstrong

The purpose of this study was to determine the significance of the variations of the pilot machine of the Department of Paper Science and Engineering at Western Michigan University by variance analysis conducted on basis weight profiles obtained from the Industrial Nucleonics scanning basis weight gauge. The profiles obtained from the basis weight gauge were subjected to a computer program which computed the cross-direction, machine-direction, and random component variations and determined F-ratios. The F-ratio shows the significance of the component variation. Cross-direction variation was found to decrease with speed. Machine-direction variation showed no significant trend and the random variation decreased …

In an effort to reduce the intake of fresh water into a mill a greater quantity of white water must be recycled to meet the demands of production. Unless some action is taken, continued reuse of the water produces a badly deteriorated paper-making system.

It is believed that the buildup of free acid and sulfate ions from the addition of paper-maker's alum causes the degradation. A bench trial using a Noble and Wood hand-sheet maker capable of recirculating white water was used to duplicate such a deteriorated system and then to restore it with the introduction of Ba(OH)₂. …
