The Possible Influence Of Nestbox Size On Nesting Behavior And Reproductive Success In The House Wren (Troglodytes Aedon), Mary Anne Sydlik
Masters Theses
Recent studies (Lohrl 1973i Karlsson and Nilsson 1977) have shown that there may be a relationship between nestbox size and clutch size in several passerine species. The present study was designed to determine whether nestbox size influences the clutch size and reproductive success of House Wrens (Troglodytes aedon) and to test possible cues a female might utilize to assess the size of a given nestbox. Four types of nestboxes were used in the study; they varied in floor surface from 3 inches by 3 inches to 8 inches by 8 inches. No statistically significant differences in clutch size or reproductive …

A Comparison Of Computer-Generated Advising And One-To-One Advising For Community College Students, Chris G. Zichterman
Dissertations
This study investigated the effectiveness of a counselor-made computer advising system. Ninety-one (91) community college students who had declared career choices were randomly assigned to either ADVISOR (N = 46) or to traditional one-to-one advising (N - 45). The effectiveness of both advising processes was measured along four variables: satisfaction with the process indicated by student response to a survey after the completion of the first semester, compliance with the process as indicated by the students' actual registration for courses identified during advising, performance indicated by students' grade point average during the first semester, and completion indicated by the completion …
Creating Deviance: The Collective Stigmatization Of Cigarette Smoking, Ronald Jay Troyer
Creating Deviance: The Collective Stigmatization Of Cigarette Smoking, Ronald Jay Troyer
Dissertations
This study focused on the changing norms regarding cigarette smoking. Banned by a number of states in the early 1930s, the behavior was socially and legally accepted during the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s only to once again become the object of public approbation and official sanctions in the 1970s. Examining events in both time periods, this research attempted to determine how and why this behavior came to be defined as deviant.
In explaining the negative public attitudes toward and official restrictions of the habit some commentators had cited the medical evidence that smoking has deleterious health consequences while others had …

Training occurred on a one-to-one basis with an adult female and results were assessed with a multiple baseline design. Skill acquisition and maintenance were assessed by measuring ratio of eye contact to speech duration, assertive content and assertive actions on training scenes. Generalization of social skills was assessed by means of: (1) similar, but untrained scenes, (2) choice tests between products with and without sugar, (3) in vivo tests in the school and home environment, (4) …
Status Inconsistency And Attitudes Toward Collective Bargaining At Western Michigan University, Thomas R. Radecki
Status Inconsistency And Attitudes Toward Collective Bargaining At Western Michigan University, Thomas R. Radecki
Dissertations
Status inconsistency has been extensively investigated as an explanatory variable since the pioneering research of Lenski (1954). A wide range of substantive outcomes have been examined as dependent variables. The findings have been disparate. While a number of studies have found support for the concept, a substantial body of negative results have been reported.
Recently, a controversy has developed in the literature. On one side of the controversy are those who feel the concept has little value as an explanatory variable--adding nothing beyond status alone. Supporters of the concept see it as an important explanatory variable and a determinant of …

An Investigation Of "Spirituotherapy": An Approach To Christian Counseling, Robert Q. Hendershott
Dissertations
The Christian counseling field as known today is a relatively new professional practice. Little evaluative research has been undertaken on the various counseling approaches which corporately make up the Christian counseling movement. This research studied one of these new Christian approaches, "Spirituotherapy" (Christ-centered counseling).
Spirituotherapy's thrust and teachings are directed towards individuals who are seeking biblical answers for the problems for which they are seeking psychological help. This study sought to identify what effect Spirituotherapy had on past clients of Grace Fellowship International (GFI), the organization pioneering Spirituotherapy. The clients' perceptions of the effect of counseling at GFI was the …

Accountability And University Teaching: Toward The Systematic Mediation Of Professional Power, Paul Alan Dorsey
Accountability And University Teaching: Toward The Systematic Mediation Of Professional Power, Paul Alan Dorsey
Dissertations
Between 1965 and 1980 American higher education has witnessed the emergence of several related developments which challenge traditional conceptions of the autonomy of higher education: affirmative action, the managerial revolution in higher education, the student consumer movement, the strengthening of statewide coordination of higher education, the accelerated movement to collective bargaining, and the increasing involvement of the courts in college and university affairs. This study identifies and articulates the nature and significance of emergent qualitative dimensions of structural change, for which these developments are structural indicators, and argues that they constitute a new, emergent form of occupational control over university …

The Interrelationship Of Leader Self-Actualization And Life Stressors To The Resultant Incidence Of Reported Medical Problems Of Middle Management Educators, John S. Thatcher
Dissertations
Schools, being a part of the larger social system, have not escaped the increasing pressures evident in our society. The principalship as an important component of the educational process has not enjoyed immunity from this same problem.
Because school principals are individuals, they react differently to life stressors. Some appear to have the ability to handle all stressors without suffering any onset of medical problems. Others appear not to have this immunity and as a result have medical difficulties. Because of this seeming difference and because of a lack of research of this type in education, the relationships between life …

The Development And Use Of A Film On Public Art In The City Of Kalamazoo, Michigan, For The Purpose Of Building Community, Sesta V. Peekstok
Dissertations
The goals of this study were: (a) to produce and test the impact of a film on public art in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and (b) to demonstrate through development and use of a film on public art how public art can contribute to the building of community.
A survey of public art in the United States suggests that people's commitment to their community can be influenced by their relationship with the public art in the community. In 1965 Congress created the National Foundation on the Arts and Humanities. Stimulated by that support over the past 15 years, works of art, funded …

An Examination Of Potential Problems That May Be Encountered In The Administration Of An Educational Corporation In The Management Of Medical Doctors, Kathy Anne Hulst House
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine various management problems that may exist in the administrative setting when the group being managed has as much or more education and/or experience than the manager. Specifically, the nature of medical training and education in medical schools was proposed to affect the groups of medical doctors, both salaried by the corporation and volunteers, in the managerial setting when the manager was required to operate the educational facility as a business in the profit-making sense as opposed to the hospital setting where the doctors may be less concerned about cost factors. The congruence …

Regional Bargaining: Its Impact On Local Control Of School Districts In Macomb County, Genevieve Eleanor Gangler
Dissertations
In the 1960's teachers obtained the right to bargain collectively with local boards of education. During the succeeding 20 years, some teachers' collective bargaining groups evolved from a single local union to a regional unit. Macomb County and Grosse Pointe, Michigan, teachers evolved in the manner now represented by the MEA/NEA Local I regionalized group.
The purpose of this study was to investigate regional bargaining and its impact on local control of schools as perceived by school board members, superintendents, principals, union presidents, and teachers. The negotiating goals of MEA/NEA Local I was also investigated in relationship to local control …
A Field Test Of A Reading Program Needs Assessment Strategy, Linda Jane Howard Vingelen
A Field Test Of A Reading Program Needs Assessment Strategy, Linda Jane Howard Vingelen
Dissertations
This dissertation described a needs assessment model for a reading program and described the field testing of that model. The needs assessment model was a strategy for conducting a comprehensive and systematic assessment of reading program needs in kindergarten through Grade 12. The model could be used as a basis for educational program planning by a director of reading and a school superintendent. A model for conducting a reading program needs assessment was conceived and field tested because there were few available needs assessment models in reading which have been field tested. Field testing was particularly vital because only after …

A Method For Community Education Directors To Identify Activities Which Are Potential Time Wasters, Frank Glenn Cookingham
Dissertations
This study was designed for three purposes. First, an instrument, called the Time Allocation Inventory (TAI), was developed for community education directors to use in estimating the effects of allocating time to activities often classified as time wasters. Second, the reliability and types of information produced by two methods of scoring responses to the instrument were compared. Third, the effects of two different sets of conditions on responses to the instrument were investigated.
A time waster was defined as an activity which, in relation to another activity, is less effective in accomplishing desired goals or objectives within a specified time …

Effects Of Thioridazine (Mellaril) On Titrating Delayed Matching To Sample Performance In Mentally Retarded Adults, Timothy Theodore Wysocki
Dissertations
Four mentally retarded adults participated twice daily in assessments of their performance of a titrating delayed matching to sample discrimination. Trials began with the center of three response panels illuminated by one of three colors. Depression of the center panel terminated the light on the center panel and, following a delay, resulted in the presentation of two comparison colors on the side panels. Pressing the side panel illuminated by the same color which had been presented on the center panel yielded a reinforcer, while incorrect responses produced a brief timeout. The delay between depression of the center response panel and …
