Factors Influencing The Decision Of Minority Students To Attend Graduate Schools Of Social Work, Jeannine Henry Sanchez, Charles H. Mindel, Dennis Saleebey
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
This study of 255 minority students enrolled in Graduate Schools of Social Work examined factors which influenced them to decide to attend these schools. The most frequently mentioned reasons were the curriculum and location of the school followed by prestige, financial incentives, emphasis on minority concerns and influence of significant others. Those schools which attracted greater numbers of minorities tended to attract them on the basis of curriculum, emphasis on minority concerns and not requiring entrance examinations. Formal recruitment activities were not seen as particularly effective.

A Comparison Of Three Operational Definitions Of Job Satisfaction, Thomas J. Kuieck
A Comparison Of Three Operational Definitions Of Job Satisfaction, Thomas J. Kuieck
Dissertations
The major purpose of the study was to provide to educational leaders information pertinent to the selection of job satisfaction instruments. The Need Satisfaction Questionnaire created by Porter, as modified by Trusty and Sergiovanni, and the Quality of Employment Job Satisfaction Survey developed by personnel from the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan were compared with the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire developed by Weiss, Dawis, England, and Lofquist to investigate the concurrent validity of the instruments. The study focused primarily on the psychometric aspects of the Need Satisfaction Questionnaire, an instrument used by earlier investigators to assess individuals' …

A Petrographic Analysis Of Black Mesa, Arizona Ceramics, Elizabeth M. Garrett
Masters Theses
Seven ceramic types from excavated Anasazi sites on Black Mesa were examined petrographically in order: (1) to obtain an accurate description of the geologic tempering m aterial; (2) to determine if specific ceramic types from Black Mesa and the surrounding area share a common area of manufacture; and (3) to compare the tempering material in the ceramics with the mineralogical components in the Wepo and Toreva Formations in order to determine if the ceramic items contain locally available material.
Each of the ceramic types examined appear to have had more than one manufacturing locus. Only Black Mesa Black-on-white has temper …

The Effects Of Alternative Diffusion Channels And Alternative Organizational Positions Of Receivers Of Diffusion Information Upon Receiver Understanding And Practitioner Utilization Of An Educational Innovation, Howard T. Major
Dissertations
This study investigated selected effects of diffusing an educational innovation via one of two diffusion channels, either print or dyadic exchange, to one of two organizational positions of the receivers of diffusion information, either the building principal or the building media professional. The selected effects included a cognitive effect and a behavioral effect. The cognitive effect consisted of receivers' understanding of the innovation and the principles of its effective utilization. This understanding of the innovation was measured with a 10-item instrument developed for this study. The behavioral effect consisted of an actual utilization of the innovation by individuals in the …

Establishing Verbal Behavior: The Effects Of Using Establishing Operations And Imitative Prompts To Teach Mands To Two Non-Verbal Elderly Retarded Persons, Terry Steven Bradford
Masters Theses
The present study tested a procedure to establish vocal mands in a 47- year-old non-verbal male with Down's syndrome and manually signed mands in a 64-year-old severely retarded female who was physically incapable of speech. In a multiple baseline design across subjects and settings, subjects were taught to complete four behavioral sequences. An establishing operation was then introduced: an item required to complete each sequence was systematically removed once as a probe for manding. Following this, relevant establishing operations were paired with imitative prompts to train manding missing items. Following mastery of a ll mands during booster training, subjects were …

The Effects Of A Lottery On Completion Of Medical Records By Physicians, Richard William Beers
The Effects Of A Lottery On Completion Of Medical Records By Physicians, Richard William Beers
Masters Theses
Completion of hospital medical records by physicians is a frequent problem to hospital administrations. A performance based lottery was used to evaluate its effectiveness in reducing the number of medical records which were unfinished and considered delinquent. Thirty-three male physicians were included in this study. Physicians earned or lost lottery chances in weekly drawings for a dinner at a restaurant or gift certificate to a local store. Results show an immediate increase in rate of record completion which declines over the course of the eight week experimental condition. Age of records were inversely correlated to the rate of completion. The …
Development Of A System For Water Quality Analysis Using Particle Induced X-Ray Emission, James Albert Andrus
Development Of A System For Water Quality Analysis Using Particle Induced X-Ray Emission, James Albert Andrus
Masters Theses
Particle induced x-ray emission (PIXE) has been in use for several years at Western's accelerator laboratory. Its primary purpose has been to provide trace element analysis of various types of solid samples. The analysis of water samples has not been done because of problems involving target preparation for the accelerator. A process called vapor filtration, developed at Purdue University, allows adequate sample preparation for the accelerator. This process is being adapted for use here at WMU. When completely operational, this system will give the WMU accelerator program the additional capability of performing water quality analyses to concentrations of parts per …

Charles Langlade In The French And Indian War, Paul M. Trap
Masters Theses
At the time when North America was "being torn by conflict for control of the continent, Charles-Michel Mouet de Xanglade became one of the most important Indian leaders in the Old Northwest. During the French and Indian War he led parties of Indian warriors in most of the major campaigns of the war, from the first fighting at Pickawillany to the French capitulation at Montreal in I760. Xanglade's Indians were typical of most Indian war-parties, both impairing the French cause by their atrocities and inappropriate actions and providing badly needed support in crucial situations.
This paper describes Xanglade's actions during …

Ninety-nine students were pretested on the Pursuit Rotor Task and screened for hypnotic susceptibility. From this screening, 40 high susceptible subjects were randomly assigned to one of four conditions: (1) hypnosis and mastery imagery, (2) hypnosis, (3) mastery imagery (H), and (4) no-treatment control. Ten low susceptible subjects were directly assigned to a second mastery imagery (L) condition which served as a special comparison group. …

The Existence Of Generalization Abilities In Five Aphasics, Jo Ellen Gilbert
Masters Theses
This study was designed to determine if generalization, the facilitation of performance on untrained items through training of related skills, can be evidenced in the language behavior of an aphasic population. Five aphasic subjects were drawn from a patient population at a Veteran's Administration Medical Center in Michigan. Each subject was presented with 25 unfamiliar pictures utilizing five cueing techniques: whole word repetition, first syllrble cue, sentence completion, written word, and a control of no input. These were then used to elicit verbal responses to the pictures. The subjects were then shown 25 similar pictures, without cues. Statistical analysis showed …
