Graphing As A Reading Skill, Don Deresz, Grover C. Mattewson
Graphing As A Reading Skill, Don Deresz, Grover C. Mattewson
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
The science curriculum contains built-in opportunities for the teaching of reading skills. Using graphs is a skill that is necessary for children to gain information from their reading (Silvarcli and Wheelock, 1980). Science instruction can guide children to comprehend information from their reading by teaching them to read and infer from graphs. Lucas and Burlando (1975) stated that scientific experiences "are designed so that the student will be asked to define problems, locate information, organize data into graphic form, evaluate findings and draw conclusions.

What role should reading specialists play? Many will continue to provide traditional remedial services, but there are indications that the consultant and staff development role is beginning to get more attention than it has in the past. This is good news for those reading specialists who have sought to work with teachers and administrators for more than a decade. It may even be better news for children and teachers because reading specialists are demonstrating that not only can they teach students with reading problems, they can also consult with teachers and administrators to improve reading instruction for all students.

Reading And Literacy--Alive And Well, John Micklos Jr
Reading And Literacy--Alive And Well, John Micklos Jr
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Reading and English teachers often feel as though they are fighting a losing battle. After all, many critics claim that reading is a dying art in the United States. These critics believe that television has replaced reading as a leisure activity and contributed to a general decline in the standard of literacy. There is good news, however, for those who believe in the importance of reading and books. Reading is not dead, and many research findings suggest that the level of literacy and the amount of interest in reading may be higher than ever.

Tristan Und Isolde: Gottfried's Paradigm For Emancipation, Elvira Borgstadt
Tristan Und Isolde: Gottfried's Paradigm For Emancipation, Elvira Borgstadt
Masters Theses
The romance is seen as a paradigm for emancipation in which Gottfried von Strasshurg deals with -the search for selfactualization and individualism which began to manifest itself in Western medieval society. The paradigm consists of two phases, entailing six consecutive steps of interaction between individual and society: the first poses the problem of alienation and is initiated by (l) the education of the individual which leads to (2) his/her isolation from mainstream society and ends in (3) the individuals attempt to gain full integration; the second phase deals with the consequences of alienation and brings a solution in that (4) …

The Induced Histopathology Of The Testes And Epididymides Of Cf-1 Mice By Known Or Suspected Teratogens, Mutagens, And Carcinogens, Kevin K. Block
Masters Theses
With each passing year, humans are exposed to ever increasing numbers of chemical agents, many of which may have mutagenic, carcinogenic, or teratogenic effects on the human species. Animal studies must be performed on any chemical substance that is suspected of being acutely dangerous to humans by way of cancer induction or inducted malformations to infants. Seven drugs of known or suspected mutagenic, carcinogenic, or teratogenic potential were examined for their ability to induce histopathology in the testes and epididymides of CF-1 mice. Mitomycin-C, hydroxyurea, and adriamycin induced significant histopathology whereas predisolone, thalidomide, streptomycin sulfate, and polybrominated biphenyl induced minimal …

An Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of Selected Readability Formulas Applied To Secondary Texts, Donna Keenan
An Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of Selected Readability Formulas Applied To Secondary Texts, Donna Keenan
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Everyday, the reality of this statement becomes painfully obvious to many high school students across the nation. The creative ideas implemented in elementary school are not often to be found on the secondary level. Instead, we find subject area teachers who are confident of their ability to uphold the "high standards" in teaching the content of their particular disciplines. Unfortunately, these high standards frequently involve using material which is written on a high twelfth grade or college readability level. With national attention focused on students' declining scores in reading, as well as increased apprehension concerning the number of illiterate high …

Sociological Perspectives On The Ecological Model, Ronald Mancoske
Sociological Perspectives On The Ecological Model, Ronald Mancoske
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Germain and Siporin have written social work practice texts which seek to integrate diverse material into practice through an ecological model. Part of the integration deals with the issue of micro-macro practice which has been a dichotomous issue throughout social work traditions. Four perspectives which Kemeny used to analyze a similar dichotomy in sociology offer insights and caveats for social work to consider as it uses general systems theory as a framework for practice. The four perspectives are called the competitive, the inclusive, the exclusive, and the cumulative. This paper traces similar developmental notions in the sociological literature and notes …
Welfare Legislation And American Poverty Traps: Ironies And Characteristics, Theresa Villanueva, Richard J. Caston
Welfare Legislation And American Poverty Traps: Ironies And Characteristics, Theresa Villanueva, Richard J. Caston
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
We argue that legislative attempts to establish bureaucratic programs to eradicate American poverty will invariably result in ironic inconsistencies that will doom such programs to only limited or partial success. As an illustration, we examine the ironic history of the AFDC program as it has been legislated to deal with American poverty. Three sociological accounts for the ironies of welfare programming are then drawn together. One account suggests that undue concern over the work ethic has overridden more direct concern for the deprecating living conditions of the Door. A second account suggests that poverty is so functionally beneficial to a …
The Political Influence Of Older Americans, John B. Williamson, Linda Evans, Lawrence A. Powell, Sharlene Hesse-Biber
The Political Influence Of Older Americans, John B. Williamson, Linda Evans, Lawrence A. Powell, Sharlene Hesse-Biber
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
This essay explores the future prospects for the political influence of older Americans. Some analysts contend that the next fifty years will bring a marked increase in the political influence of the elderly. Others argue that the aged are unlikely to become a significant political influence at any time in the forseeable future. We review the relevant evidence and conclude that it is not entirely consistent with either of these positions. Our analysis suggests a third alternative, that there will be a marked increase in the political resources of the elderly, which will not necessarily translate into an increase in …
Teenagers Problems: An Examination Of Youth And Adult Perceptions, Richard E. Isralowitz, Mark Singer
Teenagers Problems: An Examination Of Youth And Adult Perceptions, Richard E. Isralowitz, Mark Singer
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
It has been pointed out by the Task Force on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (1976) that too often programs have been planned and implemented on the basis of uninformed speculation. In order to determine the major concerns of youths for purposes of delinquency prevention and resources allocation, a study was conducted in the Cleveland area of Ohio. This study was designed to compare the perspectives of youths and adults toward teenage problems.
While the exact ranking of problems were not identical, the eleven problem statements ranked highest by both populations were highly similar. The problems that are drawing the …
Petrology Of Fluvial And Shoreline Sands In A Modern Arc-Trench Gap, Guatemala, James Robert Bartel
Petrology Of Fluvial And Shoreline Sands In A Modern Arc-Trench Gap, Guatemala, James Robert Bartel
Masters Theses
Petrographic studies of modern sands, derived from areas with known source rocks, climate, relief, environments of deposition, and tectonic setting, are essential for compiling compositional models for ancient sandstones. The Pacific coastal plain of Guatemala is terminated 25-60 km inland by the steep slopes of a row of active Quaternary volcanic and granitic rocks.
Sands being deposited on the coastal plain by the Rio Nahulate, which drains the older volcanic and granitic terrane, show significant compositional differences with those supplied by the Rio Samala, which drains an area dominated by active volcanism: Q9F35L56 vs. Q …

Magnitude Estimation Of The Quality And Intelligibility Of Degraded Speech, Theresa Smith
Masters Theses
The purpose of the study was to identify within-group and between-group differences in perceived quality and perceived intelligibility of degraded speech for listeners with normal and impaired hearing. Following a visual magnitude estimation task, 10 subjects with normal hearing and 10 subjects with sensory-neural hearing impairment listened to connected speech samples degraded by seven levels of harmonic distortion and estimated the magnitude of their quality and intelligibility. Log average quality estimates and log average intelligibility estimates varied linearly with log degradation values for each group. The slopes of the log-log functions were interpreted as measures of perceptual sensitivity. Slopes for …

The package contained worksheet activities on the use of the table of contents, index, and headings and sub-headings of a book. After the package was developed, its effectiveness on students' academic performance was assessed. The students' performance was assessed in two different ways — sample questions, or probes at different points of the program and classroom quiz results. The first experiment showed that the package was effective in teaching the skills of using the table …
Early History And Influence Of Harvard College’S Hollis Professorship Of Divinity (The First Endowed Professorial Chair In America), Russell Vernon Kohr
Early History And Influence Of Harvard College’S Hollis Professorship Of Divinity (The First Endowed Professorial Chair In America), Russell Vernon Kohr
Masters Theses
The creation by Thomas Hollis of London of the Hollis Professorship of Divinity at Harvard College in 1721, the first endowed professorial chair in America, had three effects. First, it elevated to the chair a series of distinguished minister professors from whose classroom came most of the clergy of eighteenth century Massachusetts, to say nothing of those of the remainder of New England. Secondly, the establishment of the chair broke the lockstep of the practice inherited by Harvard College from Oxford and Cambridge Universities, by which a tutor taught all members of a class all subjects. Henceforth the divinity professor …
Structural Analysis Of Precambrian Metasedimentary Rocks Of The Swede Gulch Formation, Nahant, South Dakota, Richard G. Cookman
Structural Analysis Of Precambrian Metasedimentary Rocks Of The Swede Gulch Formation, Nahant, South Dakota, Richard G. Cookman
Masters Theses
Precambrian X tectonites deformed between thermal domes in the northern Black Hills 1.7 B.Y.B.P. display variably trending isoclinal folds cross-cut by southeast trending slip-folds developed in discrete shear zones. Eugeosynclinal sedimentary rocks consisting of shale, quartzarenite , sublitharenite, and graywacke were metamorphosed to phyllite, quartzite, and metagraywacke during two syntectonic phases and one post-tectonic phase. The earliest syntectonic metamorphism was associated with development of isoclinal folds and may have produced amphibolite or greenschist facies. It was succeeded by retrograde metamorphism of greenschist facies syntectonic with and post-tectonic to development of southeast trending folds.
Mica, chlorite, iron oxides, and graphite are …

Masters Theses
The purpose of this study is to gather statistical evidence to determine attitudes toward the "Best Books for Young Adults" booklist as a positive selection tool for book selectors in public high schools in a three county area. The survey method was used to investigate attitudes towards the list and specific collection holdings of titles recommended by the "Best Books for Young Adults." Data were collected through questionnaires to book selectors in twenty-five high schools in Kent, Muskegon and Ottawa counties. Results of the survey indicate that book selectors are ambivalent toward the list, and that selection patterns correlated slightly …
Structural And Organizational Forces In The Etiology Of Corporate Crime, Beti Thompson
Structural And Organizational Forces In The Etiology Of Corporate Crime, Beti Thompson
Dissertations
In an effort to gain understanding of the etiology of corporate crime, a theoretical framework for examining the problem has been developed. This framework includes structural features such as a capitalistic organization of society, the importance of political economy, the importance of market structure, and the importance of corporate influence over the legal environment, in understanding corporate crime. Corporations within this society are affected by the structural features of society. Organizations are organized according to capitalistic principles and effectively force their employees into certain kinds of actions and activities. It was theorized that such organizational factors might have an influence …
Self Care As An Innovation In Health Care Delivery: The Health Systems Agency As Medium And Barrier, Yvonne Marie Vissing
Self Care As An Innovation In Health Care Delivery: The Health Systems Agency As Medium And Barrier, Yvonne Marie Vissing
Dissertations
This is an inquiry into the attitudes of Health Systems Agency Boards of Directors toward the use of self care as part of the health and delivery system. Self care is viewed as a current social movement in health care. Contributions and limitations of both classical social movement theory and resource mobilization theory were examined for their utility in understanding and making predictions about the self care movement. Self care attitudes of the boards of directors from all eight Michigan Health Systems Agencies (HSAs) were analyzed through the Self Care Attitude Index (SCAI). Data were gathered via self-administered, mail questionnaires. …
A Model For Inservice Professional Development Of Educational Administrators, Rofithah Hashim
A Model For Inservice Professional Development Of Educational Administrators, Rofithah Hashim
Dissertations
The factor most influential in the decision to undertake this developmental study was a directive received from the Director General of Education, Ministry of Education, Malaysia. The second factor was the perception that the obsolescence of previously learned skills and understandings dictates a need for a systematic, comprehensive, and task-oriented inservice professional development of educational administrators within the contemporary system.
The purposes of this study were twofold. The first was to develop a model and the second was to propose a set of task descriptions appropriate and necessary for implementing the model.
The model developed has three crucial stages, i.e., …

This study investigated the effects of serving less preferred foods (vegetables) prior to the noon meal on: (1) The amount of vegetables eaten. (2) The variety of different vegetables eaten. (3) The number of servings of vegetables requested by the children. A plate containing 10 grams each of six different vegetables was served under one of two conditions: (1) Alone, 10 minutes prior to the main meal. (2) With the main meal for the first 10 minutes. A third condition allowed for the children to request any one of the six vegetables as an addition to their main meal. The …
Effect Of Informational Posting And Employee Inspection On Safety Hazard Reduction In A Retail Drug Store, Craig A. Berger
Effect Of Informational Posting And Employee Inspection On Safety Hazard Reduction In A Retail Drug Store, Craig A. Berger
Masters Theses
Undesired safety conditions were operationally defined for a large retail drug store. The recording of unsafe conditions were conducted for two different employee shifts for ten weeks. A multiple baseline design (ABC-ACB) was used in which three conditions were introduced: (a) baseline, (b) public posting of a safety performance chart, and (c) individual employee inspections. Results indicated that the frequency of safety hazards declined 23% from baseline for the public post-condition and declined 44% for the employee inspection condition (averaged across both shifts). An advanced analysis of variance indicated significant mean differences (p < .01) between baseline and employee inspection for both shifts. An additional measure was taken correlating photograph ratings by employees on a safety dimension and an attractiveness dimension. The coefficient of correlation was statistically significant (r = .76; p <.05). The results indicate that a training program involving employee inspections may be an effective way of reducing undesirable safety conditions.
Reindustrialization And The Future Of Social Welfare, Steve Burghardt, Michael Fabricant
Reindustrialization And The Future Of Social Welfare, Steve Burghardt, Michael Fabricant
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
"Reindustrialization" is a term of economic complexity and great, if confused, social implications to most human service workers. Human services workers can only challenge the plans envisioned by most reindustrialists if certain arguments and assumptions are understood. This article will lay out the reindustrialists plans and assumptions. It will also develop some of the reasons why such ideas, as they are now formulated, cannot work -- in terms based on common experiences highly familiar to every human service worker.
