50-An Archaeological Survey Of The Proposed Oakview Estates Site In New Buffalo, Michigan, William M. Cremin

Reports of Investigations

With receipt of a signed and dated (26 Aug 82} contract from Mr. Steven M. Davenport of Donlon-Lofgren-Maenhout and Associates, Architects, Inc., Mishawaka, Indiana, authorizing Phase I archaeological evaluation of the proposed Oakview Estates site in New Buffalo, Michigan, a research team from Western Michigan University undertook on-site investigation of the property in order to determine whether planned work relating to the construction of a residential complex would impact cultural resources. There follows a report of fieldwork conducted on 29 Aug 82, together with appropriate background information and recommendations derived from the team's research.

13-Historic Period Sites Recorded For The Kalamazoo River Basin, 1977-1981, William M. Cremin, Charles B. Stout

Archaeological Reports

During the five year Kalamazoo Basin Survey project (1976-1980), survey teams, under the direction of Dr. William M. Cremin of the Department of Anthropology, Western Michigan University, investigated by means of surface reconnaissance nine survey transects placed across the Kalamazoo River in Allegan, Kalamazoo, Calhoun and Jackson Counties, Michigan. Surveyor coverage in the nine transects aggregated 135 km 2 , or 18% of the land area delimited by their boundaries, and resulted in the recording of 328 prehistoric sites. In addition, interviews with area landowners and collectors ~aving knowledge of local prehistory and the whereabouts of archaeological sites resulted in …

12-An Archaeological Survey Of The Thornapple River Basin In Hastings And Castleton Townships, Barry County, Michigan, William C. Cremin, Caven P. Clark

Archaeological Reports

When the Thornapple Basin Survey program commenced in 1979, the Barry County site files indicated the presence of only 64 archaeological sites in this area of the state. However, it was also quite apparent from the available data in the site files as well as from information provided by the Michigan History Division that no program of systematic archaeological research had ever been conducted in the county. And, clearly, this was a situation that the MHD desired to have remedied.

Aside from the interest expressed by the State Archaeologist, Dr. John Halsey, and his staff in having a program of …

Selective Recovery Of Corrugated Clippings, Timothy J. Rourke Dec 1981

Selective Recovery Of Corrugated Clippings, Timothy J. Rourke

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Selective recovery of waste corrugated into the kraft and NSSC fractions is gaining in popularity. This selective reuse of fibers enables the papermaker to use more recycled fiber in the linerboard portion of corrugated boxes. It is well documented that 100% recycled paper can be used in the medium while the highest percentage of secondary fibers in the linerboard is 30%. Greater than 30% recycled fiber in the linerboard results in poor runnability. Since reuse of secondary fibers in the medium is already at a maximum, this paper will place more emphasis on the reuse in the linerboard.

Developing Story-Telling Skills With Language-Experience Stories, Charles L. Smith

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Although the use of the student's oral language in language-experience stories is comparatively easy and straightforward, to extend and increase the understanding in the use of language necessitates some type of construct for the teacher. The framework which follows is presented for use with language-experience stories, to foster the expressive language abilities of students. The examples are taken from actual experience stories dictated by children who have been motivated with pictures.

Parents As Partners In Reading Through The Newspapers, Nicholas P. Criscuolo Dec 1981

Parents As Partners In Reading Through The Newspapers, Nicholas P. Criscuolo

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Parents can capitalize on the many articles, columns, features and other items contained in the pages of the daily paper. What is needed, to make the newspaper a regular source of reading lessons that are both enlightening and entertaining, is a careful preview of the available items, with a thought for their possible uses. To become skilled at the previewing strategy, a parent might look at the kinds of ideas described in courses-for-parents which discuss lessons and learning in children's books. Some school personnel, working with librarians, have developed courses for parents, to acquaint them with the best in children's …

The Use Of Electrocoagulation As A Flocculating Aide For Deinking, James L. Schram Dec 1981

The Use Of Electrocoagulation As A Flocculating Aide For Deinking, James L. Schram

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The effects of electrocoagulation as a flocculating aide for deinking was evaluated using a "homemade" electrode unit. The unit was inserted into a laboratory-size Voith-Morden forced-air flotation cell. The process of electrocoagulation involves two steps:

1. Reducing the zeta potential of the system to 0.0 mV by pH adjustment.

2. The passing of current through the stock suspension which causes the electrolysis of the water, and thus hydrogen and oxygen gas bubbles are produced. These gas bubbles collect ink particles to form solid-gas composites which can be removed more easily using flotation.

The process was evaluated on the forced-air flotation …

Improving Textbook Learning With S4r: A Strategy For Teachers, Not Students, Elton G. Stetson Dec 1981

Improving Textbook Learning With S4r: A Strategy For Teachers, Not Students, Elton G. Stetson

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The purpose of this article is to introduce S4R, a reading study system designed to improve comprehending and remembering of information contained in a textbook. While S4R certainly can be utilized as a self-study method similar to those identified above, the focus here will be on S4r as it is used by the teacher in the classroom. The system will be briefly described, followed by initial research findings and implications for use.
