Reports of Investigations
Pursuant to the establishment of a cooperative agreement between the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Western Michigan University (with the project period beginning 24 Jan 92 and extending through 30 Apr 92) authorizing a Phase I archaeological study of two parcels aggregating 375 acres of the Gourdneck State Game Area, Portage Township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, archaeologists in the Department of Anthropology initiated a literature, documents, and site file search and between 2 Mar- 10 Apr conducted on-site evaluation of the project area in order to determine whether any potentially significant resources were present. There follows a report of our …

Particle Size And Velocity Measurements In Two Phase Flows Using Laser Doppler Velocimetry, Joseph Parker
Particle Size And Velocity Measurements In Two Phase Flows Using Laser Doppler Velocimetry, Joseph Parker
Honors Theses
Laser Doppler Velocimetry is used in fluid mechanics to measure the velocity of particles in fluid flows. A small particle exhibits motion closely corresponding to the fluid behavior because of its ability to follow high frequency flow fluctuations. Large particles do not follow the flow field precisely but represent a second phase. This project used LDV to measure the size and velocity of particles in two phase flows by computer analysis of the Doppler signal.

Parent Communication In A Whole Language Kindergarten: What We Learned From A Busy First Year, Beverly Bruneau, Timothy V. Rasinski, Martha Shehan
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Among recent developments in literacy research and practice is the increased recognition of the critical roles that parents play in the education of their children (Rasinki and Fredericks, 1989). Involving parents in their child's literacy learning is particularly important for kindergarten teachers. The kindergarten literacy curriculum should build upon what children have begun to learn at home, and, continue to involve parents in supporting their child's literacy development. Communicating with parents on how they can continue to give active support to their children's literacy learning is an important task for kindergarten teachers.
Acoustic And Perceptual Correlates Of Breathy Vocal Quality, Ronald Allen Cleveland
Acoustic And Perceptual Correlates Of Breathy Vocal Quality, Ronald Allen Cleveland
Masters Theses
Recordings were made of seven normal female and eight normal male talkers producing sustained vowels under normal, moderately breathy, and very breathy conditions. Twenty listeners judged the recorded vowel tokens for degree of breathiness using a direct magnitude estimation procedure. A Cronbach coefficient alpha revealed strong intrasubject agreement.
Several acoustic analyses were evaluated by measuring their correlations with the mean of the listeners' breathiness ratings. Measures of cepstral peak prominence in band limited signals were most strongly correlated with perceived breathiness. The height of the autocorrelation peak in highpass filtered signals and the relative amplitude of the first harmonic were …
