The Effect Of Insulin Mimetics On Enzymes Of Fatty Acid Biosynthesis, Eric A. Berg Aug 1994

The Effect Of Insulin Mimetics On Enzymes Of Fatty Acid Biosynthesis, Eric A. Berg

Masters Theses

Fatty acid biosynthesis, an insulin regulated pathway, is the process of producing fatty acid chains from 2 and 3 carbon units. Two enzymes in this pathway that insulin affects are glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) and fatty acid synthase (FAS). Sodium vanadate and sodium selenate have demonstrated insulin-like effects in several tissue and cell types. These mimetic effects include increasing glucose transport, regulating glycolytic enzymes, normalizing plasma glucose levels and activities of insulin regulated enzymes in diabetic rats. Our goal was to examine effects of sodium vanadate and sodium selenate on fatty acid biosynthesis in two insulin responsive systems: Isolated rat hepatocytes …

Photoionization With Excitation Of The 4s And 4p Subshells In Krypton, Ahmad Farhat Aug 1994

Photoionization With Excitation Of The 4s And 4p Subshells In Krypton, Ahmad Farhat

Masters Theses

High-resolution photoelectron spectra of the nd, Rydberg satellites in krypton have been measured for the first time for six different angles and for photon energies between 68.5 and 250 eV. The relative intensities of these satellites with respect to the 4s and 4p main lines are in very good accord with the most recent measurements of Krause et al. (1992) at 68.5 eV. They also confirm that the theoretical predictions for the relative intensity of these satellites are too high. We determine the ratios for nd satellites with respect to the 4s and 4p main lines, and extract the angular …

Effect Of Poly Acrylate Addition On Coating Color Rheology, Water Retention And Coating Performance, Shambhu Nath Aug 1994

Effect Of Poly Acrylate Addition On Coating Color Rheology, Water Retention And Coating Performance, Shambhu Nath

Masters Theses

Five polyacrylate samples were used to study their effects on coating color rheology, water holding and runnability. The Cylindrical Laboratory Coater was used to apply the coatings and study the runnability of the coating colors. The healing tendencies of the coatings were studied by inducing a scratch under the blade. The higher acid level and degree of crosslinking of the polyacrylate gave higher viscosity and the higher acid level also gave higher water retention. Coating colors containing polyacrylates were less prone to dilatancy at high shear. The addition of polyacrylate reduced the healing of coating colors, but for the same …

The purpose of this study was to assess and describe programmatic and curricular differences between developmental and regular kindergartens. The research questions were to find how regular and developmental teachers describe their program and to determine from these descriptions any differences or similarities. A descriptive research design was used. A survey was developed from a search of literature, review by a panel of experts, and a pilot study.

The population for the study was all kindergarten teachers and the sample was all kindergarten teachers in a metropolitan Detroit county. Surveys were returned by 82% of the sample which met a …

American Foreign Policy: Constitutionality Of Congressional Initiatives Into Presidential Prerogative—Who Controls The War Powers?, Jay F. Donaldson Aug 1994

American Foreign Policy: Constitutionality Of Congressional Initiatives Into Presidential Prerogative—Who Controls The War Powers?, Jay F. Donaldson

Masters Theses

This paper examines the executive-legislative relations on foreign policy formulation, debate, authorization, funding and implementation. The research shows that the founding fathers never intended one branch to totally control the "war powers." Inter-branch rivalry and conflict were intended.

The research establishes a pattern this inter-branch relationship has taken since the Constitutional Convention. This "pattern" clearly indicates the natural ability of the executive branch in handling foreign affairs especially those key events involving the use of force or where the potential for violence exists.

The paper also examines the surge of congressional authority (1970's) which attempted to apply restraint on what …

Ella Sharp's Hillside Farm: Expressions Of Class And Gender In Nineteenth Century Rural Michigan, Carol A. Nickolai

Masters Theses

This study examined ways in which social class and gender were expressed in the landscape and material culture of the Merriman-Sharp Farm, a nineteenth century upper class farm owned by women in Jackson, Michigan. Material culture studies, landscape architecture, and architectural history were used in addition to available documents to focus on how the Merriman-Sharp family reflected their class and gender affiliations.

The social construction of reality is an ongoing process at the Merriman-Sharp farm through the Ella W. Sharp Park and Ella W. Sharp Museum. The ways in which the Ella W. Sharp Park and Ella W. Sharp Museum …

Educators Collaborate To Integrate Language Arts Instruction For Preservice Teachers And Elementary Students, Janet Dynak, Nancy Gagliano

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Research indicates that as preservice teachers process information about the knowledge base for teaching and learning, they need to be encouraged to resolve differences among their prior beliefs, the paradigms and models being covered in education classes, and the curriculum and instruction being delivered in the schools where they participate (Feiman-Nemser and Buchmann, 1989).

School/University Partnerships In Reading/Language Arts: Working Toward Collaborative Inquiry, Sherry L. Macaul, Thomas Blout, Kimberly Hill Phelps

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Efforts and initiatives to improve the education of our teachers are currently underway. The Holmes group reports Tomorrow's Teachers (1986), Tomorrow's Schools (1990), and the soon to be released Tomorrow's Schools of Education (in press) provide principles to assist schools and universities as they work together to improve the education of our students. In the Association of Teacher Educator's (ATE) annual survey of critical issues in teacher education, Buttery, Haberman, and Houston (1990) state that "teacher education will not be im proved until the conditions of practice in the schools are improved." It is essential that reform in schools and …

Application Of A Modified Analytical Derivatization Method To The Determination Of Microbial Metabolites In Aquifer Systems, Jie Lu Jun 1994

Application Of A Modified Analytical Derivatization Method To The Determination Of Microbial Metabolites In Aquifer Systems, Jie Lu

Masters Theses

The geochemical evolution of Low Molecular Weight Fatty Acids (LMWFA's) in various ground water samples and aquifer solid samples from both contaminated and uncontaminated sites has been studied. An improved analytical method has been established for both qualitative and quantitative determination of LMWFA's. The low molecular weight (LMW) organic acids are metabolic intermediates of the oxidative biodegradation of hydrocarbon contaminants. The hydrocarbons are believed to be the electron donors in these redox reactions. Formic and acetic acids were found to be the major LMWFA's in these ground water samples and aquifer solid samples. Their concentrations increase as the redox condition …

Effects Of Alkaline Internal Sizing On Rotogravure Print Quality Using Waterbased Inks, Michael L. Busche Jun 1994

Effects Of Alkaline Internal Sizing On Rotogravure Print Quality Using Waterbased Inks, Michael L. Busche

Masters Theses

The effect of alkaline internal sizing in improving paper smoothness and ink gloss in waterbased rotogravure printing was investigated. Papers were internally sized with alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) under alkaline conditions from slack-sized to hard-sized. Papers were printed with waterbased inks on a web gravure press. A major problem with waterbased inks is increased surface roughening of paper and a low ink gloss. Temporal surface roughening was reduced by increased AKD internal sizing with a concomitant significant increase of up to 400% in ink gloss. Surface properties were correlated with print quality. The print quality improved with increased hydrophobicity of …

A Study In Correctional Leadership And Conflict Within The Informal Organization Of A Correctional Setting: A Paradigm Shift In Correctional Treatment, Francis L. Crowe Jun 1994

A Study In Correctional Leadership And Conflict Within The Informal Organization Of A Correctional Setting: A Paradigm Shift In Correctional Treatment, Francis L. Crowe

Dissertations

This research was designed to achieve two purposes. First, it ascertained what modes were preferred by inmates to resolve conflict in a correctional setting as measured on the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument. Second, it measured whether participation in a 12-hour, conflict resolution, cognitive treatment program would significantly change the inmate’s ability to handle conflict in a more positive manner.

There were three major components to this research. First, a group of 66 inmates from the Kent County Correctional Facility Honor Camp in Grand Rapids, Michigan, was tested using the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Resolution Mode Instrument. Second, using randomization, the participants were …

Michigan's New Definition Of Reading: The Promise Of Literacy And The Paradox Of Practice, Julie H. Kaufman Jun 1994

Michigan's New Definition Of Reading: The Promise Of Literacy And The Paradox Of Practice, Julie H. Kaufman

Masters Theses

This study analyzes Michigan's New Definition of Reading, its theoretical foundations and instructional implications as these enter classroom practice. Designed as a qualitative case study of reading instruction in a fifth grade classroom, this study documents the way that a teacher and her students approach and come to understand literacy under the bureaucratic and organizational imperatives of practice. The disempowering effects of such patterns of practice are described in relation to the purported aims of reading instruction.

An Empirical Study Of Just-In-Time And Total Quality Management Principles Implementation In Manufacturing Firms In The U.S., Loknath Sriparavastu

Masters Theses

Literature in vogue points out that, in the last decade, American manufacturing companies came a long way in their renewed emphasis on the quality process. Justin- Time (JIT) and Total Quality Management (TQM) are the two magical phrases that are being frequently used in almost all the articles published on quality and productivity. Nevertheless, the literature does not provide any satisfactory explanation as to how JIT and TQM principles are implemented in the manufacturing industries.

This research, through a nationwide empirical survey, analyzed the effects of JIT and TQM strategies implementation. Survey results showed that implementing both JIT and TQM …

Sensitivity Of The Comp Objective Test To Structural Differences Among General Education Programs In Liberal Arts Colleges And Comprehensive Universities, Christine Ann Brooks

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the validity of the College Outcome Measures Program (COMP) by determining if COMP is sensitive to differences among general education programs.

Two variables provided the operationalization of general education: (1) degree of institutional control over general education course selection, and (2) percent of total coursework devoted to general education. To control for additional factors known to impact upon students' learning during college, four concomitant variables were used in the analysis. These variables were selected following a review of the literature on the effects of college. The level of analysis was the institution; …
