Environmental Fate And Transport Of Pfas In Wastewater Treatment Plant Effluent Discharged To Rapid Infiltration Basins, Kai M. Trobisch

Masters Theses

Fate and transport of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent discharged to rapid infiltration basins (RIBs) is investigated using data from 26 WWTPs in Michigan and numerical modeling to assess the role of air-water interface (AWI) sorption in modulating mass fluxes to the saturated zone. Analysis of RIB physical properties yields a median separation distance of 6.5 meters between land surface and the water table, and a continuum of area-normalized effluent fluxes ranging from 0.01 to 0.62 meters per day. A subset of WWTPs with RIBs indicate higher PFAS concentrations in groundwater than effluent with …

Moral Responsibility And Other Visceral Attitudes Of Western Michigan University Students Toward Food Waste, Quinn Heiser Jun 2024

Moral Responsibility And Other Visceral Attitudes Of Western Michigan University Students Toward Food Waste, Quinn Heiser

Masters Theses

Despite the large number of people that go hungry on a regular basis in America, food waste remains a looming issue, globally and nationally. Both American college students and the universities themselves contribute a large portion to the national food waste totals. A dichotomy that is especially curious is the difference between students who live on-campus and whose main source of meals is the dining centers, versus students who live off campus and rely mainly on groceries to make meals independently. However, food waste has seldom been studied in the context of the fact that college is a major transition …

The Effects Of Technology Based Self-Monitoring On Behaviors Related To Academic Engagement Of A University Student With A Disability, Rachel Mickelson

Masters Theses

College students with disabilities often experience difficulties with meeting the demands of university level courses due to challenges with time management and impulse control (Shmulsky & Gobbo, 2013). Self-monitoring has been proven effective for various populations and behaviors, although limited research has been conducted with college students with disabilities. I-Connect, a technology-based self-monitoring tool, is a digital application that utilizes momentary time sampling where users can select a behavior and interval of time to be prompted to self-monitor that behavior (University of Kansas, 2022). The app also collects real time data and automatically creates graphs to depict the responses collected …

Cocoa Production In The Era Of Crude Oil Economy: The Case Study Of Ondo State, Nigeria., Hakeem Shina Lamidi Jun 2024

Cocoa Production In The Era Of Crude Oil Economy: The Case Study Of Ondo State, Nigeria., Hakeem Shina Lamidi

Masters Theses

Nigeria's cocoa industry has been faced with obstacles that include a lack of adequate infrastructure, little or no research and development efforts for weather-related challenges and pest control, limited financial support for cocoa farming startups, absence of modern farming techniques, an aging agricultural workforce, and decrepit cocoa trees all of which have contributed to the decline in the production of cocoa by Nigeria. The Nigerian government's failure to prioritize agricultural policies and support farmers instead of relying on oil exports exacerbates these issues. While it is assumed that countries endowed with abundant natural resources, including oil, like Nigeria, would naturally …

Dietary Probiotic Supplement Attenuates Methamphetamine-Induced Conditioned Place Preference In Female Sprague-Dawley Rats, Kristen Powell

Masters Theses

Substance use disorders (SUD) represent a global public health crisis with limited effective treatment options. Recent findings implicate the gut microbiome and gut/brain axis in the pathophysiology of SUDs. Several preclinical studies have established that psychostimulants alter gut microbiome composition, but no published studies have assessed behavioral effects of dietary probiotic supplements on drug-induced behavioral changes. This study utilized rodent conditioned place preference (CPP) as a behavioral index of conditioned drug reward to determine if a dietary probiotic supplement alters the behavioral effects of (+)-methamphetamine (METH). Fifty-four adult female Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to receive either a standard rodent …

Estimating And Applying Parameters Necessary To Plan Cluster Randomized Trials (Crts) And Multisite Cluster Randomized Trials (Mscrts), Dea Mulolli

Dissertations

Cluster randomized trials (CRTs) are commonly used to study the effectiveness of educational interventions. During the design phase of a study, it is critical for researchers to ensure their studies are adequately powered to detect meaningful treatment effects, including both main and moderator effects. Designing CRTs with adequate power to detect main and moderator effects requires accurate estimates of design parameters. This research aims to advance the literature on design parameters for power analyses, specifically focusing on empirical estimates of intraclass correlations (ICCs). The work consists of three research papers that examine the role of including the teacher level in …

A Contingency Table Alternative To Poisson Regression In Comparing The Frequency Distributions Of Two Populations, Sandra Tay Jun 2024

A Contingency Table Alternative To Poisson Regression In Comparing The Frequency Distributions Of Two Populations, Sandra Tay

Dissertations

When testing the conditional independence between a binary outcome and a binary treatment indicator, conditioned on a categorical variable with k levels, typically represented by a K × 2 frequency table, researchers often turn to Poisson regression and the Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel (CMH) test. However, a common challenge encountered in these analyses is the presence of treatment effect heterogeneity. Introducing an interaction term between treatment indicators and effect modifiers in log-linear regression offers potential solutions, yet the equidispersion assumption of Poisson regression remains problematic. On the other hand, the CMH test assumes similar treatment effects across all strata, disregarding potential variations among …

This dissertation examined classification outcome differences among four popular individual supervised machine learning (ISML) models (logistic regression, decision tree, support vector machine, and multilayer perceptron) when predicting minor class membership within imbalanced datasets. The study context and the theoretical population sampled focus on one aspect of the larger problem of student retention and dropout prediction in higher education (HE): identification.

This study differs from current literature by implementing an experimental design approach with simulated student data that closely mirrors HE situational and student data. Specifically, this study tested the predictive ability of the four ISML classification models (CLS) under experimentally …

Macroevolution Meets Community Ecology: Does Species Interaction Influence Tempo And Mode Of Diversification In Fishes That Cross The Marine/Freshwater Boundary?, Victor De Brito Jun 2024

Macroevolution Meets Community Ecology: Does Species Interaction Influence Tempo And Mode Of Diversification In Fishes That Cross The Marine/Freshwater Boundary?, Victor De Brito

Dissertations

Evolutionary transitions between marine and freshwater ecosystems are an extreme ecological shift and expose fish lineages to novel abiotic and biotic settings. Yet, it remains unclear how those habitat transitions and the interaction with the newly invaded communities have altered the macroevolutionary dynamics of fish clades. The theory of ecological opportunity predicts that lineages that colonize species-poor regions will have greater potential for phenotypic diversification and speciation than lineages invading species-rich regions. Thus, transitions between marine and freshwaters in depauperate regions may promote adaptive radiation. While most major fish clades are restricted to either marine or freshwaters, so called transmarine/ …

The Role Of Evaluation Terms In The Quality Of Final Evaluation Reports In International Development Cooperation: A Multi-Phase Mixed Methods Study, Fanny J. Hernandez De Alvarez

Dissertations

In international development cooperation there is constant discussion about how to improve evaluation practices. Too little is known about where and which factors influence the quality of evaluation reports. Arguably, one influential factor is the quality of the terms of reference (TORs), which, in many sectors, are referred to as Requests for Proposals (RFPs). This study examines the role of the quality of TORs in positively affecting the design and conduct of evaluations, as well as the overall quality of final evaluation reports. This study also examines other factors that may contribute to the quality of final evaluation reports.

The …

A Brief Self-Compassion Intervention For Survivors Of Sexual Trauma With Psychological Distress, Natalie Marie Hogue Jun 2024

A Brief Self-Compassion Intervention For Survivors Of Sexual Trauma With Psychological Distress, Natalie Marie Hogue

Dissertations

Individuals who have experienced sexual trauma are at an increased risk of psychological disorders and psychological distress (Dworkin, 2020; Dworkin et al., 2017; Dworkin & Schumacher, 2018). Sexual trauma has one of the highest conditional risks for the development of posttraumatic stress disorder (Domino et al., 2020; Perrin et al., 2014). Experiential avoidance, shame, and posttraumatic cognitions are associated with psychological distress after experiencing sexual trauma (Bhuptani et al., 2019; Domino et al., 2020; Foa et al., 1999; Merwin et al., 2009). Established research suggests that self-compassion-based therapies can be effective in reducing psychological distress and treating a wide range …

On Near-Linear Cellular Automata Over Near Spaces, Abdul-Rahman M. Nasser Jun 2024

On Near-Linear Cellular Automata Over Near Spaces, Abdul-Rahman M. Nasser

Dissertations

Cellular Automata can be considered as examples of massively parallel machines. They are computational mathematical objects consisting of a grid of cells, each of which can exist in a finite number of states. These cells evolve over discrete time steps according to a set of predefined rules based on the states of neighboring cells. The notion of cellular automata was first introduced by Ulam and von Neumann and then popularized by John H. Conway in the 1970s with one of the most famous examples being The Game of Life.

This research builds on and generalizes the work of Tullio Ceccherini-Silberstein …

Quasi-Monte Carlo Estimation For Functional Generalized Linear Mixed Models., Ruvini Kumari Jayamaha Hitihamilage

Dissertations

Functional Data Analysis (FDA) is a topic of growing interest in the statistics community and is applied in a wide range of fields such as Anthropology, Epidemiology, Meteorology, Neurology and Engineering. The data in FDA are smooth curves or surfaces in time or space which can be conceptualized as functions. Because of the smooth nature of the data and the measurements are highly correlated, making the classical methods such as univariate or multivariate analysis are infeasible for such data. Functional data Analysis (FDA) deals with these kinds of more detailed, complex, and structured data.

In this dissertation, we propose a …

The Synthesis, Characterization, And Application Of Polysaccharide-Based Additive To Improve Wet And Dry Strength And High-Barrier Properties Of Paper Products, Cornellius Marcello Jun 2024

The Synthesis, Characterization, And Application Of Polysaccharide-Based Additive To Improve Wet And Dry Strength And High-Barrier Properties Of Paper Products, Cornellius Marcello

Dissertations

Paper products play an essential role in our daily lives owing to their low cost, environment-friendly character, renewability, and recyclability. Paper manufacturers have been using petroleum-based strength additives (cPAM, GPAM, PAE) to meet the perceived needs of customers. On the other hand, paper produced from cellulose is hydrophilic and porous, leading to shallow water and grease resistance, causing paper manufacturers to use many kinds of coating materials such as poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and synthetic plastic to improve water resistance, especially for food packaging paper products like cups, plates, food boxes, and packaging. However, PFAS are identified as likely carcinogenic to …

Printed Graphite Electrodes For Fast-Charging Lithium-Ion Batteries, Guanyi Wang Jun 2024

Printed Graphite Electrodes For Fast-Charging Lithium-Ion Batteries, Guanyi Wang

Dissertations

The rapid growth of the electric vehicle (EV) market has demanded lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with high energy density and fast charging capability. However, charging energy-dense LIBs with thick graphite electrodes at high current densities is typically facing challenges and leading to adverse performance, such as low energy density, short cycle life, rapid temperature rises and safety issues. The root cause is the onset of Li plating. During fast charging application, the sluggish lithium ions accumulated at the surface of graphite due to kinetic limitation and formed Li plating, especially when lithiated to a high state of charge (SOC). It has …

A Model For Spacecraft Relative Motion Using Continuous Periodic Thrust, Philip Alan Hittepole Jun 2024

A Model For Spacecraft Relative Motion Using Continuous Periodic Thrust, Philip Alan Hittepole

Dissertations

A model for modifying the relative orbit of a deputy satellite with respect to a chief satellite in a near-circular orbit using continuous periodic thrust is presented. This model is built on the Lovell-Spencer relative orbital elements (ROEs). The four linear ROEs (xr, yr, ar, and Az) can be linearly modified. The two angular ROEs (Er and ) can be set to advance at a desired, constant rate. Each ROE can be modified individually but may cause intra-orbit variations in other ROEs which return to their original values at the end of a thrust cycle. A method to easily calculate …

Master Narrative Of College Access Belies Reality For Today’S Students, Jonathan S. Lewis, René A. Hernandez May 2024

Master Narrative Of College Access Belies Reality For Today’S Students, Jonathan S. Lewis, René A. Hernandez

Journal of College Access

Master and alternative narratives offer a useful framework through which to consider contemporary issues in college access. Implicit and ubiquitous, the master narrative of a linear progression from high school through a residential college toward a fulfilling career has long been dominant. Meanwhile, alternative narratives of fluid, dynamic, alternate pathways are ascendant, having received a boost from the Covid-19 pandemic and the stubborn lack of affordable postsecondary options. Observing a decline in a shared cultural narrative about college, the authors recommend that advisors help students to sort through possible storylines and then write their own.

From Pre-College Grads To Undergrads: Encouraging Full-Time Enrollment After Summer Programs, Meghan Buckley Ph.D. May 2024

From Pre-College Grads To Undergrads: Encouraging Full-Time Enrollment After Summer Programs, Meghan Buckley Ph.D.

Journal of College Access

This guest perspective argues that converting in-person summer pre-college program participants into matriculated, degree-seeking undergraduate students at that same institution is a multi-step process that involves: 1) strategic pre-college program recruitment, 2) a curated and well-rounded summer pre-college experience that is both academically rigorous and socially dynamic, and 3) continued and consistent post-program engagement. It also argues that summer pre-college programs should work intentionally with Admissions departments during pre- and post-program development to create the most effective recruiting and enrollment pipelines from pre-college to eventual matriculation
