The Shaping Of Verbal Imitation And Multiple Effects Of Aversive Schedules For Controlling Inattention In An Infant, Leta Hunt Secker
The Shaping Of Verbal Imitation And Multiple Effects Of Aversive Schedules For Controlling Inattention In An Infant, Leta Hunt Secker
Masters Theses
A six-month-old infant was conditioned to imitate four verbal cues presented by an adult experimenter by using food as a reinforcer. Aversive schedules (escape-avoidance of, or punishment with a loud buzzer) were then introduced to suppress inattentive behavior. Inattention defined as looking away from the investigator, crying, rate of vocalizations, and accuracy of imitations were measured. Three conclusions of the experiment were: 1) verbal imitation can be shaped and maintained through positive reinforcement; 2) the use of aversive schedules is not necessarily beneficial for the performance of the imitative task, or for the general well-being of the child.
A Study To Determine The Effectiveness Of An Interest Grouping Classification For Primary Grade Children, Dianne T. Mcafee Williams
A Study To Determine The Effectiveness Of An Interest Grouping Classification For Primary Grade Children, Dianne T. Mcafee Williams
Masters Theses
The purpose was to determine if a subject arrangement of easy fiction books, based on the interests of primary-grade children, and denoted by picture symbols, would make the students more satisfied with, and independent in, their book selections, as compared to an author arrangement of easy fiction books.
The study was divided into two parts, the former dealing with the author arrangement and the latter dealing with the subject arrangement. Tally sheets of student subject requests were kept by the librarian in a comparison of the two arrangements. Followup included questionnaires to primary grade teachers and librarian, and interviews with …

Schedule Effects On Individual And Paired Escape Behavior Of Albino Rats, Anton P. Colasacco
Schedule Effects On Individual And Paired Escape Behavior Of Albino Rats, Anton P. Colasacco
Masters Theses
In Experiment I, the effects of low fixed ratios on individual escape behavior of rats was studied. When FR sessions were compared to CRF sessions, measures related to shock delivery showed highest percentage increases, especially at FR-5.
Animals were then paired. Two schedules were analyzed as alternatives to individual escape. In Experiment II, shock was terminated when a specified FR was completed, either by the responses of one animal or by the total responses of both animals. Escape as a function of both animals responding was not maintained. In Experiment III, shock was terminated individually as before, or when both …

The Mental Patient As Machiavellian: An Exploratory Study, Louise B. Leader
The Mental Patient As Machiavellian: An Exploratory Study, Louise B. Leader
Masters Theses
A basic question in the study of mental illness has been whether mental patients were victims of society or manipulators of their own careers. Four hypotheses were developed to investigate the manipulative aspect of this question. Patients were selected from three different mental institutions: a state hospital, a Veteran's Administration Hospital, and a private church-related hospital. The patients' records and a group-administered battery of test instruments provided the data used to test the hypotheses. Only one of the hypotheses was supported and the basic question remained unanswered. Lack of support for the remaining three hypotheses was not seen as conclusive …
Successive Discrimination Reversal Learning In The Rat Offspring As A Function Of Maternal Stress During Gestation, Miles A. Kowall
Successive Discrimination Reversal Learning In The Rat Offspring As A Function Of Maternal Stress During Gestation, Miles A. Kowall
Masters Theses
This paper itself with the effect of prenatal stress on the learning ability of the offspring, parental emotionality on learning ability, and how these two factors interact. Female animals were categorized as either high or low emotional by measures in the open field and then further divided into shock or no-shock groups. This provided the stress condition. All females were stressed during pregnancy. Cross fostering and fostering techniques were used to provide more stringent control measures so as to be able to extrapolate prenatal influence from post natal artifacts. This resulted in a 2X2X3 analysis of variance matrix with error …

An Internship To Develop A Screening Process To Determine Probable Pilot Training Success, Ronald Dean Quisling
Masters Theses
The internship with the Department of Transportation Technology at Western Michigan University enabled the investigator to develop a screening method for the department to use in its pilot training program. It provided an opportunity to study the many and varied skills needed in order to successfully complete the pilot training course and to learn the various techniques used in pilot training. After choosing a screening method, it was given to those students enrolled in flight instruction during the 1972 Fall semester. It was the first time any type of research was begun at Western Michigan University in the aviation curriculum …

Operant And Classical Conditioning Of Single Units In Area 18a Of The Rat’S Cortex, Francis E. Butler
Operant And Classical Conditioning Of Single Units In Area 18a Of The Rat’S Cortex, Francis E. Butler
Masters Theses
The effect of the previous history of a single unit on its present firing pattern was studied using classical and operant conditioning. The units were in area 18a of the rat's cortex. It was found that there are polymodal units in that area. The firing pattern can be changed using classical conditioning. The rate of firing can be increased one standard deviation above the mean rate by reinforcing with brain stimulation. The rate can also be changed one standard deviation below the mean rate. This occurs when the trials come at a fixed time and when the trials come at …
An Exploration Of Numerous Customer Characteristics Associated With Impulse Purchasing Behavior, Ira J. Jager
An Exploration Of Numerous Customer Characteristics Associated With Impulse Purchasing Behavior, Ira J. Jager
Masters Theses
Introduction
The term "impulse buying behavior" evokes different connotations to different researchers. It is for this reason that it is difficult to formulate a universal definition for all research in the field. Engel, Kollat, and Blackwell (1968) list some of the definitions given to impulse purchasing by those who have done research in this field:
(1) "An impulse purchase is an unplanned spur of the moment decision to purchase a product."
(2) "An impulse purchase is a logical and efficient way of making purchase decisions since by waiting until one is in the store to finalize purchase intentions, a more …

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
The effects of speed reading courses have been widely researched (cf. Berger, 1968). Stevens and Orem (1963) have suggested that the superior reader entering such a course with a more rapid reading rate, is an average or above average student, and likes to read. Rauch and Weinstein (1968) and Combs (1966) stress "read, read, read" as the best method for gaining speed. However, the National Association of Secondary School principals (1965) has warned that speed and comprehension do not necessarily go hand-in-hand, a finding which challenged earlier research by O'Brien (1921). A study of Air Force personnel (Brim, 1968) suggests …
An Interdisciplinary Humanities Program As An Approach To Literature, Frederick F. Ritsch
An Interdisciplinary Humanities Program As An Approach To Literature, Frederick F. Ritsch
Perspectives (1969-1979)
Let me conclude with a statement from Maxwell Goldberg, the author of Design in Liberal Learning: "Without becoming amorphous or aimless," writes Professor Goldberg, "we are trying to replace the static, mechanical, closed-system, monistic, and self-contained routine thinking of conventional liberal learning with the open-structured, pluralistic, multilinear, multilectic thinking of the new liberal learning." He provides us with an excellent metaphor here: the concept of "freedom flowing into form."* And I might add, in our case we do not seek a "new humanism," but rather seek to revitalize the presentation of that humanism which is an integral part of …
Liberal Arts And Livelihood: A Dual Design For Higher Education, George E. Lamore Jr.
Liberal Arts And Livelihood: A Dual Design For Higher Education, George E. Lamore Jr.
Perspectives (1969-1979)
True, there have been exceptions, and every educator thinks he is one, but generally speaking, the Liberal Arts student or graduate is deeply confused, disappointed and frustrated. He is aware that his college has taught him to think, but not to be a person or to do a job. For education to neglect these dimensions of the heart and hands is to produce something more tragic than the multiple amputee. It is to produce a truncated head, absolved from personhood and detached from practicality.
