Chapter I
Introduction
Social scientists have long been concerned with the relationships between mental disorder and various sociocultural factors, such as, social economic status, ethnic background, sex, age, and marital status. Until quite recently, the majority of studies that have investigated these relationships have defined cases of mental disorder solely in terms of whether or not an individual was in psychiatric treatment (see Faris and Dunham, 1939; Rose and Stub, 1955; Hollingshead and Redlich, 1958).
The utilization of psychiatric treatment as the only criterion of mental disorder, however, has been criticized by a number of researchers. Felix and Bowers (1948), …

Masters Theses
Chapter I: Introduction
As human beings, when we cannot see clearly into the workings of life, we call it ambiguous--and rightly so. Judgment of our own behavior and that of others is always suspect. We have a tendency to label this person as "good" or that act as "evil," but there should always be a certain amount of uncertainty as to whether or not our perceptions and our ensuing judgments are correct. Those of us who are literature have also, by habit, come to look at literature as reflecting the same standards of right and wrong, of good and evil. …

Ten Years Of Research On Corrective Reading Programs: A Review Of The Literature, Sharon L. Smith
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
The purpose of this paper is to survey the research of the past ten years on corrective or remedial reading programs. In the literature, various definitions are given to corrective reading and remedial reading programs, but in this paper no distinction will be made between the two terms. Both terms refer to a plan of corrective instruction and treatment for the disabled reader, generally outside of the regular classroom setting.

Paper Engineering Senior Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to indicate the reactions of the paper industry and its associated industries to metrication, standardization, and their effects on the industry. In this thesis a history of the metric system is given. The metric system, as it relates to the paper industry and its associated industries, is discussed. To get direct views on how the paper manufacturers, paper merchants, and printers felt about metrication and standardization a survey was made.
