The Effect Of Drying Conditions On The Surface Strength Of Clay Coated Paper, Lawrence A. Gaspar Sep 1962

The Effect Of Drying Conditions On The Surface Strength Of Clay Coated Paper, Lawrence A. Gaspar

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The importance of the continuous-film forming properties of the polymer via fusion upon heating is second to none. Yasuda states that it depends on the probability of two particles coalescing upon the application of heat versus the acceleration of the rate of removal of the disperse medium from the coating. Naturally it would seem that excessive rates of drying would not permit the adhesive to fuse, but it may also alter the distribution of adhesive throughout the coating in either case. Eames has suggested the effects of certain variables on the distribution of starch in starch-clay coatings, but the fact …

Introduction

The correlation of spectra, especially ultraviolet spectra, of hydrazones with their structure has resulted in considerable confusion because of the variations in spectra obtained from apparently the same basic chromophore.

Toward Horizons Of Reading In The Aerospace Age, Barbara F. Edwards

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Milieu. We live in an age when reading is a subject of concern to the man on the street as well as to the scholar. The "This Week" section of recent Sunday newspapers serves as only one indication of the public interest in our subject. We live also in a time when scientific reasoning by a staff or team of administrators, teachers, and researchers is not only possible, but encouraged. We live at a time when the factors of group dynamics and individual counseling (6) are being considered as important elements in learning processes. In these things, all of us …

Fluctuations Of Abundance Of Planktonic Rotifers In A Polluted Portion Of The Kalamazoo River, Rudolph Prins Jul 1962

Fluctuations Of Abundance Of Planktonic Rotifers In A Polluted Portion Of The Kalamazoo River, Rudolph Prins

Masters Theses

Introduction

The two objectives of this study were to determine the kinds and numbers of rotifers in the plankton in a portion of the Kalamazoo River and to ascertain the effects of various chemical constituents of the river water on the rotifers.

The Kalamazoo River is located in southwestern Michigan and flows westward into Lake Michigan. The study was conducted along a section of the river extending from Comstock, Kalamazoo County, to Plainwell, Allegan County (Fig. 1). About 90 per cent of this section is heavily polluted with wastes from several paper industries, a few other industries, and one municipal …

The Construction Of Two Light Sources With Adequate Intensity For Magneto-Optical Rotatory Dispersion Experiments, Norman D. Love Jul 1962

The Construction Of Two Light Sources With Adequate Intensity For Magneto-Optical Rotatory Dispersion Experiments, Norman D. Love

Masters Theses

Chapter I

Introduction

The phenomenon known as the Faraday Effect was discovered by Michael Faraday in the year 1845.1 He discovered that when an isotropic substance of high refractive index is placed in a strong magnetic field which is parallel to a beam of plane polarized light, the plane of polarization is rotated. The rotation is proportional to H, the strength of the magnetic field; and to 1, the length of the light path in the sample. If X represents the rotation in minutes then

X = VH1.

The proportionality constant V is known as Verdet's constant. The units …

An Investigation Of The Genetic Basis Of Alcoholism, Daniel F. Malamud Jul 1962

An Investigation Of The Genetic Basis Of Alcoholism, Daniel F. Malamud

Masters Theses

Introduction

Alcoholism: The Disease

"Alcoholism is a chronic disease manifested by repeated implicative drinking so as to cause injury to the drinker's health or to his social or economic functioning" (53). Such a definition of alcoholism points to the disease concept which went unrecognized until recent years. In addition to its medical implications, alcoholism has been the subject of considerable writing and research by academicians in such diverse fields as sociology, psychology, physiology, psychiatry, theology, and law.

At the outset it should be noted that the writer is aware of the arguments and opinions expressed by the advocates of the …

A Soldier's Life:The Civil War Experiences of Ben C. Johnson

(Originally Entitled, Sketches of the Sixth Regiment Michigan Infantry)

Edited, with an introduction, by Alan S. Brown

This issue of Faculty Contributions, A Soldier's Life, is a significant contribution to the literature appearing during the Civil War Centennial. It is particularly appropriate in that the unit with which this diary is concerned, the 6th Michigan Infantry Regiment, rendezvoused in Kalamazoo, Michigan on August 20, 1861. It is hoped that the tales that are presented will enable the reader to have empathy with the trials and tribulations of one soldier who …

Comparison Of Alcohol Offenses Of College Students With Those Of Persons In A Similar Age Group Who Have Not Had College Experience, Cornelis Laban Jun 1962

Comparison Of Alcohol Offenses Of College Students With Those Of Persons In A Similar Age Group Who Have Not Had College Experience, Cornelis Laban

Masters Theses

Introduction

The purpose of the study was to·make· a comparison of the drunk driving behavior of college students with that· of those persons in a similar age group who have not had college experience. There is very little published information about the statutes governing "driving under the influence of liquor" (D.U.I.L.). The educable nature of persons involved in such offenses 8 and the probable anti-social and sociopathic behavior in individuals leading up to the offenses, also need thorough investigation. Very pertinent also is the question whether or not there is a biological basis for this particular behavior; an understanding of …

An Investigation Of A Possible Correlation Between Metallic Elements In Human Hair And Coronary Heart Disease, Lamar E. Bullock Jun 1962

An Investigation Of A Possible Correlation Between Metallic Elements In Human Hair And Coronary Heart Disease, Lamar E. Bullock

Masters Theses

Introduction

In the academic year 1959-1960 the National Science Foundation supported an undergraduate research program at Western: Michigan University for the spectrographic analysis of human hair. This preliminary work concerned itself with determining the quantities of magnesium, iron, and calcium in human hair. The hair samples were taken from a supposedly normal cross section of people. This group consisted of 41 women and 52 men. The ages varied from 2 to 72. Most of the hair samples were collected from a local barber shop and beauty shop, although a small portion of the samples was collected from individuals. Information concerning …

Developing Mental Content Through Creative Activities, Martha Barrett Newell Apr 1962

Developing Mental Content Through Creative Activities, Martha Barrett Newell

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Each of us seeks the approval of our peers, and this is a natural desire of children, too. But, as adults we seem to have forgotten the warmth of response to the fact that "I made it myself." There is magic in creation, and a very special kind of magic to the child who senses that he is indeed part of what he produces. Everything, from the molded handprint of the earnest kindergartener (Do you not still have one of these pieces of loveliness . . .?) to the finished mural of the high school student, has in it a …

The Role Of The School Psychologist In The Teaching Of Reading, Ruth C. Penty

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The school psychologist or psychological examiner without specific training in the reading area can help the teacher of reading to better understand her task. The psychologist or examiner with background in the teaching of reading can be of even more help to the classroom teacher.
