How Johnny Can't Learn, Howard G. Ball Jan 1976

How Johnny Can't Learn, Howard G. Ball

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Johnny's learning problems have troubled his parents and haunted his teachers since the first group of students met in the pervasive "little red schoolhouse." Because of Johnny's academic inadequacies, his teachers are admonished by public officials; teachers censure Johnny's parents; Johnny's parents criticize his lack of motivation, capability or interest; and Johnny, through his frustrations, condemns all society for its insensitivity and lack of understanding. This description includes the Johnny who is black. This Johnny responds to his society in a similar way, but his problems are more intense. His relationships with his environment are more complex. His learning problems …

The Social Sciences In General Education, Bobby G. Bell Jan 1976

The Social Sciences In General Education, Bobby G. Bell

Perspectives (1969-1979)

Proponents of general education maintain that every person is worthy of an education that is most general. Translated into a formal curriculum general education refers to that part of a student's education lying outside his area of specialization. Cultural and social literacy remain the dominant goals. Even though controversy surrounds the definition of general education and the philosophical approaches to its realization, the objective seems to be clear, that education "for an informed responsible life in our society" and "that part of a student's education which looks first of all to his life as a responsible human being and citizen." …

Pupilization Of The Instructional Program, Delores Warner Jan 1976

Pupilization Of The Instructional Program, Delores Warner

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

In order to achieve learning there must be a climate which encourages internalization of that which is being taught. This necessitates a consistently intimate relationship between the teacher and the pupils, which makes possible growth in curiosity, exploration, discovery and internalization of that knowledge as well as readiness and confidence for the implementation of that knowledge in other learning situations. In this way, the pupil actually uses that which he has learned in order to learn more, thus promoting the development of a unity encompassing teacher and pupil within the learning process and the learning experiences in which both participate.

Capstone 75: Interdisciplinary Turmoil And Triumph At The College Of Basic Studies, Boston University, William E. Davis Jr., George F. Estey

Perspectives (1969-1979)

We here report on an integrative interdisciplinary effort at the College of Basic Studies of Boston University. We are persuaded that the kind of project examined here is well within the grasp of all general liberal programs, whereas a total program of interdisciplinary studies probably is not achievable, for a host of professional and departmental reasons.

Week By Week, Hour By Hour (A Teacher's Journal Of A General Studies Course), Francis L. Gross

Perspectives (1969-1979)

The confused motorist stopped by the watermelon stand on a dusty back road in Eastern Kansas. The weather was July-drip. The sunny kind of drip, the kind where the only drip is trickling down from a wet slot on your shirt to where your belt bunches the shirt up on your hips. "How do you get to Topeka?" said the tourist. The reply from an old man in overalls, "If I was you, Mister, I sure as hell wouldn't start from here."

There isn't anyplace else to start, except from where you are, on a trip. So, I'm going to …

The Little College At Bowling Green: Developing Critical Thinking Skills In A General Education Context, James L. Litwin, Richard C. Giardina, M. Neil Browne Jan 1976

The Little College At Bowling Green: Developing Critical Thinking Skills In A General Education Context, James L. Litwin, Richard C. Giardina, M. Neil Browne

Perspectives (1969-1979)

For the past five years , the Little College at Bowling Green State University has been experimenting with various approaches to developing the critical thinking skills of incoming freshmen . Data resulting from evaluative research completed demonstrate that students can be helped to achieve significant gains in their ability to think critically. They also suggest differences in the viability of alternative curricular approaches to achieve this goal. The paper itself profiles many of the problems and issues pertinent to "experimenting" programs, including assumptions about the goals of general education, faculty recruitment, pedagogy, and evaluation . At present , the Little …

General Education: What Should Be Its Focus?, Paul F. Haas Jan 1976

General Education: What Should Be Its Focus?, Paul F. Haas

Perspectives (1969-1979)

It is apparently fashionable today to study and discuss the alternative methods used to teach the principles courses in the social sciences. Many of us have read about and have examined texts with greater lucidity and/or topical orientation. Many of us have also attempted to make our principles courses more relevant (assuming we can define relevant) by altering the course content or means of delivery. However, how many of us have actually attempted to define the purpose of our principles courses and have designed them specifically to pursue that purpose? Let us be even more challenging and inquire how many …

Public Welfare: Utilization, Change, Appropriations, Service, John E. Tropman Jan 1976

Public Welfare: Utilization, Change, Appropriations, Service, John E. Tropman

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

During the decade of the 1960's there was continually increasing interest in the programs of public welfare. This interest sprang from several sources. Citizens, always worried about welfare expenditures, developed resurgent concern. Recipients, long a quiet group, became more active, forming the National Welfare Rights Organization. And then there was the rediscovery of poverty as a social problem, and a realization that very many Americans were poor, many more than anyone had somehow realized.

The general interest in poverty and the measures used to relieve it had an effect on the academic community, generating some sustained and critical attention to …

Low Income, Ethnicity, And Voluntary Association Involvement, Nancy G. Kutner Jan 1976

Low Income, Ethnicity, And Voluntary Association Involvement, Nancy G. Kutner

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Data on voluntary association participation among low-income members of major ethnic groups in the U.S. are reviewed. Low-income blacks are most likely to participate, followed by (2) whites and Mexican Americans and (3) Italian Americans and Puerto Ricans. Reasons for these ethnic differences are considered. More general factors affecting voluntary association patterns of low-income persons are also considered, and a means for increasing their voluntary association involvement is suggested.

Social Change And Social Action, Bernard J. Coughlin, S. K. Khinduka Jan 1976

Social Change And Social Action, Bernard J. Coughlin, S. K. Khinduka

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

We define social action as a strategy to obtain limited social change at the intermediate or macro levels of society which is generally used in nonconsensus situations and employs both "norm-adhering" and "norm-testing" modes of intervention. In this formulation, the key concept is social change. This paper proposes to explore certain aspects of social change as they apply to social action.

The discussion is divided into two parts. The first is a brief summary of pertinent social change theory, presented as background for part two in which are presented and discussed certain propositions about planned change that are critical to …

Humanism As Demystification, Alfred Mcclug Lee Jan 1976

Humanism As Demystification, Alfred Mcclug Lee

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Under a variety of labels, many academic disciplines focus on the unsettling impact of fresh and vivid interpersonal experiences upon pre-existing beliefs and behaviour patterns. Reference is to philosophical discussions of sophism and humanism, historical theories about frontier influences, anthropological interest in culture shock, psychiatric concern with empathy and with perceptive listening, and sociological analyses of marginality, uses of participant observation and life-history data, and clinical studies of social behavior. Their significant similarity is that they are all discussions of demystifying influences on social thought and action. They are demystifying in the sense that they tend to translate the distant, …

Two-Stage Peroxide-Hydrosulphite Bleaching Of Groundwood Pulp, Richard Daniel Hyatt Dec 1975

Two-Stage Peroxide-Hydrosulphite Bleaching Of Groundwood Pulp, Richard Daniel Hyatt

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The conditions and chemicals for the use of hydrogen peroxide, sodium hydrosulphite and zinc hydrosulphite for the bleaching of groundwood pulp are discussed. Previous research provided guidelines for establishing optimum conditions for temperature, time, pH, consistency and type of buffer. The research carried out determined optimum conditions for a two-stage peroxide-hydrosulphite sequence. The use of an HCl extraction prior to bleaching was found to be as effective as EDTA for the removal of heavy metals. The combination of peroxide-hydrosulphite gave a brightness rise of 26 G. E. points while hydrogen peroxide alone gave 22.2 points and hydrosulphite alone gave 8.7 …

An Operation Research Approach To The Economic Optimization Of Kraft Pulping, Robert E. Packwood Dec 1975

An Operation Research Approach To The Economic Optimization Of Kraft Pulping, Robert E. Packwood

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The first attempt to apply operations research to the kraft industry came in 1959 by C.W. Carroll at the Institute of Paper Chemistry. Carroll developed a pulping rate expression and incorporated engineering balances to complete his mathematical model. Carroll then developed an optimization technique to optimize kraft mill economic performance.

This work develops the mathematical model utilizing a different pulping rate expression and further develops certain areas (e.g. recovery boiler, lime kiln, and washer models) utilizing regression equations obtained from literature and material and energy balances in an approach much like that of Boyle and Tobias.

An attempt was made …

Stability And Change In Self-Conceptions As A Function Of Perceived Consistency Of Evaluations Among Significant Others, Alan Mcevoy Dec 1975

Stability And Change In Self-Conceptions As A Function Of Perceived Consistency Of Evaluations Among Significant Others, Alan Mcevoy

Dissertations

This study represents an attempt to empirically test a theoretical model explicating the contingencies associated with stability and change in self-conceptions among highschool students. Specifically, this investigation is concerned with the cumulative and isolated impact of perceived parental, teacher, and peer expectations on student self-conceptions over time.

The basic postulate is that patterns of stability and change in self-conceptions are a function of the degree of perceived consistency in the expectations and evaluations of significant others. The data were supportive of the consistency model and suggest that some groups of significant others have a greater impact on the self-conceptualizing process …
