Some Semantics Of Basic Word Lists, Patrick Groff Apr 1976

Some Semantics Of Basic Word Lists, Patrick Groff

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Lists of words compiled on the basis of their frequency of occurrence in writings of various kinds have long been considered "basic" materials for reading instruction. It is said teachers should use such lists because the child best learns to read if the order of the words presented to him for this purpose is governed by the relative frequency words occur in written materials. Put another way, it is argued that if word A occurs more often in written matter of different types than does word B it then should be presented for a child to learn to read before …

Reading And The Bicentennial Celebration, Nicholas P. Criscuolo

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Real functional American citizenship should be appreciated and stressed more in our schools. Many children lack an understanding of the history and government of their city, state and nation. Our National Bicentennial Celebration is a very appropriate time to instill in these youngsters this knowledge in a fascinating manner. It is a time to motivate them to read the stirring accounts of our country's past. It is a time for awareness of the significant contributions of prominent leaders and their impact upon our present city, state and union.

Meaningful Vs. Meaningless Utterances In Inventories And Their Effects On Pupil Performance, Jerome Axelrod Apr 1976

Meaningful Vs. Meaningless Utterances In Inventories And Their Effects On Pupil Performance, Jerome Axelrod

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

In administering phonics inventories to his pupils, a teacher must be sure he is testing the pupils' knowledge of phonics ("sound sense") and not other or additional knowledge the pupils may possess. Administering this kind of extraneous-free test may be difficult in view of the great ranges of knowledge the students may bring to the testing situation. Therefore, it is the teacher's responsibility to employ in his phonics tests stimuli which he is relatively certain lie outside the ken of the respondents. It would seem, then, that using nonsense syllables (NSS: i.e. meaningless utterances) in phonics tests would be superior …

Sustained Silent Reading (Ssr) As In Let Them Read, Ronald G. Noland Apr 1976

Sustained Silent Reading (Ssr) As In Let Them Read, Ronald G. Noland

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Sustained Silent Reading is a concept developed and implemented by Hunt' (2) and McCracken (3) that has as a fundamental goal the development of proficient readers. Educators in their conscientious efforts to provide direct reading instruction are over-teaching. Because reading is a skill, practice is necessary in order to develop reading proficiency. Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) provides opportunity for the much-needed practice by allowing readers to sustain themselves without interruption in silent reading periods of half an hour or more.

Some Reasons For Oral Reading, R. Baird Shuman Apr 1976

Some Reasons For Oral Reading, R. Baird Shuman

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Few would question the appropriateness of oral reading in the first and second grades. Most experts feel that reading aloud is a worthwhile activity in the earliest years of school because the students have not yet developed sufficient speed in silent reading to make silent reading a valuable enterprise for them. Lewis and Sisko (1963) caution, however, that "from the time a child's silent reading rate overtakes his rate of oral reading, usually during the second or third grade, too much oral reading has the adverse effect of slowing down the rate of silent reading and encouraging unnecessary lip movement, …

Social Participation And Social Integration Of The Aged: Implications For Social Welfare, Ellen Fischgrund Mar 1976

Social Participation And Social Integration Of The Aged: Implications For Social Welfare, Ellen Fischgrund

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The purpose of this paper is to provide a critical review of the literature regarding the informal social participation patterns of the aged. The factors associated with degree of interaction with friends will be elaborated. For example, the relationship between morale and friendship patterns emerges as a predominant concern in the research literature. An effort will be made to examine the accumulated evidence in terms of implications for practice or further research. Finally, these findings regarding the informal social participation patterns of the aged will be analyzed within the framework of prevailing theoretical notions about social integration.

Philosophy, Sociology And The Theory Of Social Welfare: A Conceptual Starting Point, Robert D. Herman Mar 1976

Philosophy, Sociology And The Theory Of Social Welfare: A Conceptual Starting Point, Robert D. Herman

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

In this paper I want to explore and 2begin to elucidate a fundamental problem in social welfare theory. The problem centers on the conception of the relation between individuals and social structure. Before proceeding with this task, it is important to note the senses in which the term "social welfare" will be used. The term has two basic senses, deriving from two more or less distinct intellectual traditions. In one sense the term refers to the provision of goods and services to needy individuals, either through government "transfers" or private philanthropy. In this comparatively narrow sense social welfare is a …

Evaluation Research: Some Possible Contexts Of Theory Failure, Pranab Chatterjee, Lenore Olsen, Thomas P. Holland Mar 1976

Evaluation Research: Some Possible Contexts Of Theory Failure, Pranab Chatterjee, Lenore Olsen, Thomas P. Holland

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

What can evaluation research tell us about social science theory? It is the purpose of this paper to examine that question. There has been much written in the current literature about the relationship between theory and practice. Because it is evaluation research (Breedlove, 1972: 71-89; Newbrough, 1966: 39-52; Suchman, 1971: 43-48; Suchman, 1967; Weiss, 1973: 37-45; Fitz- Gibbons and Morris, 1975: 1-4) that attempts to analyze the results of practice, it is the authors' belief that an examination of evaluation research studies for possible contexts of theory failure will contribute to a linkage between theory and practice.

Praxis In The Human Services As A Political Act, David G. Gil Mar 1976

Praxis In The Human Services As A Political Act, David G. Gil

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

My purpose in this paper is to develop a rationale for, and to suggest approaches to, the conscious integration of a political component into professional practice. Involved in this is a re-definition or re-conceptualization of professional roles in the human services as potentially powerful means of a radical, revolutionary political strategy. The overall aim of such a political strategy is to eliminate the systemic sources and dynamics of social, economic, and political inequalities - in my view, the major underlying causes of the entire array of social problems with which the human services profess to be concerned.

An Analysis Of Political Violence With Ramifications For Options Of Response, James Lubben Mar 1976

An Analysis Of Political Violence With Ramifications For Options Of Response, James Lubben

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The latter years of the Sixties brought a wave of political violence to this country that paled the face of America in startled fear and utter disbelief. Unrest on college campuses, racial conflict spiraling crime rates, and civil disobedience related to the Viet Nam War caused many Americans to identify this period as one of the most violent in U.S. History. Such a sense of public paranoia swept the country that on July 29, 1967 President Johnson issued Executive Order 11365 establishing a National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders. The nation remained tense and June 1968 saw the creation of …

Staging The York Creation, And Fall Of Lucifer, Clifford Davidson Jan 1976

Staging The York Creation, And Fall Of Lucifer, Clifford Davidson

English Faculty Publications

The Creation, and Fall of Lucifer by the York Realist was intended to provide a spectacular opening for the Corpus Christi cycle, of which the city of York felt very proud in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Since the York Realist appears to have been particularly sensitive to the conditions of production, this opening play provides a useful focus for attention to the staging used in the York cycle. The internal evidence of the Realist's Creation, and Fall of Lucifer demonstrates that he was not writing a mere literary exercise, but kept in mind the specifics of stage production.

Humanities In An Age Of Uncertainty, Norman Penlington

Perspectives (1969-1979)

The substance of this paper was given at the recent (Oct. 1976) conference of the Association of General and Liberal Studies held at the College of Basic Studies , Boston University.

In the few minutes at my disposal what can I, who am approaching the end of my formal teaching career, tell you who are just beginning or who are midway? Although I have spent a lifetime finding my way in this age of uncertainty I can relate some useful teaching experiences.

Updating The Dolch Basic Sight Vocabulary, Jerry L. Johns Jan 1976

Updating The Dolch Basic Sight Vocabulary, Jerry L. Johns

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Word lists for reading instruction have long been of interest to educators. It has been noted by Johnson and Barrett (16) that over 125 word lists have been constructed during the past seventy years. Of these many word lists, there is little doubt that the Dolch list has received widest publication and use. Authors of texbooks on the teaching of reading (1, 8, 18, 23) have made reference to the Dolch list with suggestions for teaching the words. In addition, many reading materials have been developed to help teach these words in isolation and in context. Books have been written …
