Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Teaching Reading in High School by Robert Karlin? This book was designed for high school teachers interested in providing reading instruction in their classrooms. Karlin emphasizes the need for the teaching of developmental reading at the secondary level, and he supports his point of view with statistics resulting from a survey taken in the New York public high schools in 1955. According to this survey approximately forty percent of the students evaluated were found to be reading at least a year below their reading expectancies. Basic reading skills, such as word recognition, reading comprehension, rate, study skills and literary appreciation, …

An Investigation Of The Maturation Of Articulation Of Elementary School Children, Thomas D. Marshall Aug 1965

An Investigation Of The Maturation Of Articulation Of Elementary School Children, Thomas D. Marshall

Masters Theses

The Background and Purpose of the Study

Introduction

Developmental studies of speech (12, 13, 24) have indicated that the growth of articulation skills in children follows a definite pattern, with the vowels being first mastered, then the consonants, and finally, the consonant blends. Studies generally agree that the normal child acquires essentially adult articulation by eight years of age. It may be expected, then, that in the early elementary grades, immature articulation skills are not unusual in normal children, and that at higher grade levels, immature articulation skills are relatively less common. Mills and Streit (11), in a survey of …

The Making Of Readers, Helen E. Master Jul 1965

The Making Of Readers, Helen E. Master

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

In considering the process of developing anything, we must have in mind a clear concept of the end product we are hoping to attain. In considering the developing in children of an appreciation of literature, we are aiming at producing life-time readers, children and ultimately adults who will turn with confidence to books (using a general term) for information and pleasure. Now in the day of relatively cheap printing, and hence, an overwhelming amount of inferior material, we must qualify the word "books" with the word "good." And though such a description is woefully open to a carping kind of …

Basic Reading Skills, Gwen Horsman

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Deriving meaning from the printed page in a high school situation requires the ability to use a great variety of reading skills. Some of these skills are developed in the first grade. During each school year they are extended and refined and new skills are acquired. By the time a student enters high school he should have at his command the knowledge of and the ability to apply a vast variety of reading skills when attacking the printed page. Only then can he understand, use and enjoy ideas presented in written form.

Interests, Attitudes And Personality Patterns Of Undergraduate Students In Speech Pathology And Audiology, Sandra Mary Henderson Jul 1965

Interests, Attitudes And Personality Patterns Of Undergraduate Students In Speech Pathology And Audiology, Sandra Mary Henderson

Masters Theses

Chapter I

The Problem and Its Background

Introduction

Over the past several decades there has been increasing interest in the occupational choices of men and women, and the interests and attitudes associated with various professional groups. Since occupations are becoming increasingly more specialized, employers and educators have found that those people who perform best in the position of their choice are those who exhibit certain interests and attitudes with regard to their occupation. Colleges emphasize the necessity of counseling in order to enable students to effectively choose general areas of concentration. The fields of study chosen by students are a …

Father Charles E. Coughlin And The Formation Of The Union Party 1936, Michael H. Parsons Jul 1965

Father Charles E. Coughlin And The Formation Of The Union Party 1936, Michael H. Parsons

Masters Theses

Preface

On October 17, 1926, a young Irish-Catholic priest stood before the altar of his church in Royal Oak, Michigan and delivered a radio sermon. Within a decade, his voice, transmitted by thousands of radios, would be familiar to millions of Americans. Father Charles E. Coughlin had begun a stormy career that would earn him the title "radio priest" and make him one of the most controversial figures to appear on the American political scene in the depression-ridden 1930's.

...

In this study, I trace the development of Coughlin's disillusionment with the Roosevelt administration, analyze his contribution to the formation …

Banesism And Molinism In Theory And Practice, Burns K. Seeley Jul 1965

Banesism And Molinism In Theory And Practice, Burns K. Seeley

Masters Theses

Last paragraph of Introduction:

The purpose of this paper is to acquire a better understanding of the relationship between grace and tree will, that is, the paradox between the omnipotence of God and human free will. More specifically speaking, this paper will deal with two historical approaches to the problem, namely, Baneziem and Molinism. At the onset we shall learn something about Domingo Banez, O.P. and Luis de Molina, S.J. who were largely responsible for the systems which bear their names. We shall then learn something or the historical circumstances which produced Banezism and Molinism and also some or the …

Great Britain And The Balkan Crisis Of 1875-1878, Carol Zainfeld Becker Jul 1965

Great Britain And The Balkan Crisis Of 1875-1878, Carol Zainfeld Becker

Masters Theses

Introduction

For years Great Britain had followed the time-honored doctrine in foreign affairs of maintaining the balance of power which meant

to resist by diplomacy or arms the growth of any European State at once so formidable and so potentially hostile as to threaten our national liberties, the security of our shores, the safety of our commerce or the integrity of our foreign possessions.

With the defeat of Napoleon in 1815 and the establishment of the Metternichian concept of the concert of Europe, Britain's historic determination to preserve the balance of power gave way to a new attitude in foreign …

U.S. Foreign Aid Policy: Its Impact On Public Opinion, Jane L. Olson Jul 1965

U.S. Foreign Aid Policy: Its Impact On Public Opinion, Jane L. Olson

Masters Theses

Introduction

An analysis of the relationships between public policy and public opinion is vital to gaining an understanding and appreciation of the political process in the United States. According to democratic theory, citizens are to be free to express their views on issues and policy decisions. In a representative democracy the elected officials are supposed to carry out the wishes of their constituents. This study is directed toward analyzing the relationships between foreign aid policy and public opinion toward ten selected policy changes which have taken place since World War II. It focuses on the formal foreign aid program; and, …

An Exploratory Investigation Of The Indifferent Pattern Of Accommodation To Work-Related Organizations, John E. Blissick Jul 1965

An Exploratory Investigation Of The Indifferent Pattern Of Accommodation To Work-Related Organizations, John E. Blissick

Masters Theses

Introduction

In recent years there has been growing interest in the nature of workers' attitudes, values, and behavior.1 One area of special concern has been a particular behavior pattern frequently observed among blue collar workers called indifference, and it generally refers to a lack of identification with one's work and work organization. Indifference is a phenomenon which occurs among almost all major groups of workers to some degree, but it has been observed most often and in its most intense forms among blue collar workers. In various forms it has been called apathy, noninvolvement, and un-affectedness. It has been …

An Exploratory Study Of Deferred Gratification Patterns Of Junior High School And Senior High School Drop-Outs And Part-Time Attenders, Charles T. Woods Jul 1965

An Exploratory Study Of Deferred Gratification Patterns Of Junior High School And Senior High School Drop-Outs And Part-Time Attenders, Charles T. Woods

Masters Theses

Introduction

The concept of Deferred Gratification refers to the practice of postponing immediate satisfactions so that future goals may be gained. Today's activities are view-example, renouncing emotional impulses will permit eventual emotional satisfaction. Education is viewed as an investment in the future prospects. Saving money is done for future satisfactions. Putting off marriage until one has a good job is perceived as the means to greater mobility.

The utility of Deferred Gratification Patterns (DGP) is in its relationship to social class and social mobility. This is seen in that some realize that social mobility, upward or downward, is a probability …

The Private Session In Michigan Council-Manager City Government, Dale H. Poel Jul 1965

The Private Session In Michigan Council-Manager City Government, Dale H. Poel

Masters Theses

Introduction

Norton Long has stated that "...under the deceptive uniformity of an apparently similar legal structure, a wide range of actual variance appears in the 'constitutions' of our local government."1 The concern of this study is one part of that wide range of variance: the private and/or informal sessions held by councils in Michigan council-manager cities. These sessions are part of that variance which, if not understood, must lead to tentativeness and uncertainty in generalizations on the local government process. They would include any meetings of the council and manager other than the formal public meeting. Instances in which …

Negligence In The Operation Of Business Aircraft, Daniel J. Garber Jun 1965

Negligence In The Operation Of Business Aircraft, Daniel J. Garber

Masters Theses

Introduction

Basis for Business Aircraft

The use of airplanes as a production tool for executives and supervisory personnel by business firms in practically all fields of endeavor is ever increasing. This is true even though the airlines have largely substituted pure jet aircraft for piston powered airplanes and turbo-propelled ships on the trunk routes. This makes it more difficult for the business aircraft to save the executives of a company time and money by cutting down transportation waste in obtaining more hours of usefulness from those persons using business aircraft transportation and less expense for employee's hotel, meals and other …

American Policy In Korea, 1867-1954, Ernest Gilman Jun 1965

American Policy In Korea, 1867-1954, Ernest Gilman

Masters Theses

Preface

This paper shall describe and analyze United States' policy towards Korea from 1834, when American attention was first attracted to that country because of possible trade opportunities, to 1954, which saw the completion of the Geneva Conference on Korea. Throughout this period American policy was neither static, nor was it ever well defined. During this span of one hundred and twenty years American policy in Korea falls logically into two main periods:

i) the initial period from 1834 to 1943 during which time America's primary concern was the establishment and maintenance of the "Open Door" policy;

and ii) the …

Anglo-American Isthmian Diplomacy And The Clayton-Bulwer Treaty, George W. Shipman Jun 1965

Anglo-American Isthmian Diplomacy And The Clayton-Bulwer Treaty, George W. Shipman

Masters Theses

Introduction

The Panama Canal is one of the major commercial waterways of the world and, furthermore, it is vital to the defence of the United States. ·Before this canal could be constructed, it was necessary to persuade the British government to give up its right to share with the United States the building of an isthmian canal. The Clayton-Bulwer treaty of 1850 had provided that neither the United States nor Great Britain would carry out the project singly. Later through the Hay-Pauncefote treaty Great Britain agreed to abrogate the Clayton-Bulwer treaty and allowed the United States alone to build and …

The Utilization Of Artillery And Mortars As Infantry Support Weapons In The Chaco War, Charles John Goodall Jun 1965

The Utilization Of Artillery And Mortars As Infantry Support Weapons In The Chaco War, Charles John Goodall

Masters Theses

I. The Background of the Conflict

In the summer of 1932, while the world's attention was focused upon Japanese aggression in Manchuria, a border skirmish in the upper reaches of the Plata valley ignited a conflict which could not be extinguished by the good offices of the Pan-American Union or the peace-making machinery of the League of Nations. The prize in question, nearly one hundred and fifty thousand square miles of savanna and swamp, would be minuscule in comparison with the territorial acquisitions of the dictators of that era, but to the two politically unstable and highly nationalistic nations contesting …

Social Distance Attitudes Of College Students Toward Three Minority Groups, Dennison W. Nichols

Masters Theses

Introduction

This study is an endeavor to add to the already existing scientific information in regard to man's social relations with his fellow men. More exactly, the purposes of this research are: (1) to gain a better understanding of prejudice among college students toward both stereotype images and "real" described persons belonging to the Jewish minority, the Negro minority and the homosexual minority, (2) to explore the possibility of their being a relationship between social-distance attitudes of these students toward these minorities and the personal, economic and certain other factors influencing these students, and (3) to consider the significance of …

The Social Implications Of Dante’S Commedia, Judson I. Mather Jun 1965

The Social Implications Of Dante’S Commedia, Judson I. Mather

Masters Theses

Introduction

The focus of this study has derived, in part, from the experience of teaching a course in "The History of Social Thought" to undergraduate sociology majors. The more comprehensive texts in the field accord Dante some notice. But the treatment he receives as a social thinker is uniformly patronizing. One of the most substantial and adequate of these texts, for example -- the three-volume study by Howard Becker and Harry Elmer Barnes-- has this to say:

The key to Dante's character and to his social theory as well is to be found in the fact that "world peace was …
