More Important Than Class Size, Mary E. Sensabaugh Jul 1972

More Important Than Class Size, Mary E. Sensabaugh

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

On the front of a handout by our principal, I found these words in bold black print, "MORE IMPORTANT THAN CLASS SIZE." Immediately, I wondered what could possibly be more important than class size. Reading on I found that new research, concerned with the quality of our education system, had just been completed by Martin N. Olson, Executive Secretary of the Associated Public Schools Systems and a research associate with the Institute of Administrative Research (IAR). This one short article started me on a search for a copy of his study.

Utilize Volunteer Help In Your Reading Program, Lucetta A. Johnson

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

"A job for everyone and everyone with a job." If each child in your classroom is to work up to his full potential, this adage applies to the students in your classroom and to anyone who offers you volunteer help, the same way it applies to efficiency in business.

Teaching Reading In The Secondary Schools, Kenneth Vandermeulen Jul 1972

Teaching Reading In The Secondary Schools, Kenneth Vandermeulen

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Recently, a report of an accrediting inspection team in Illinois contained this ironic statement (adapted here) : Teachers in this high school tend to be so highly specialized in their disciplines that they have moved from the affective domain to the cognitive domain almost exclusively, thereby vitiating their educational endeavors. This article sees the establishment of habits of reading for pleasure as a means of avoiding such criticism of our schools, and as a direct means of building upon an elusive quality called creativity.

Two Effective In-Service Reading Programs, Nicholas P. Criscuolo

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

In-service opportunities are given to secondary teachers in the New Haven public schools twice a month. On alternate Mondays students are released at 1 p.m., and teachers remain at their schools for in-service work. Such flexibility in scheduling permits the development of effective in-service education, and it is the purpose of this article to describe two programs in reading conducted recently in New Haven: one at the high school level and another at the middle school level.

Children And Poetry, Marion Hilberry Apr 1972

Children And Poetry, Marion Hilberry

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

How do you get children to write poetry? For several years my husband and I have been interested in finding an answer to this question. As college teachers we have been particularly concerned about the numbers of good students who come to us reluctant to either write or read poetry. Our theory w-as that children at any age will take to poetry if they can be encouraged to make some poems themselves and to talk easily about the poems. This will lead, in turn, to their enjoyment of other poetry and all imaginative literature.

New Forms Of Heterosexual Marriage And Mating, Robert Lundy Apr 1972

New Forms Of Heterosexual Marriage And Mating, Robert Lundy

Honors Theses

One third to one half of marriages are destined to end in a divorce court. However, in the de jure system or orders, monogamous marriage is the only accepted form with sexual behavior limited thereto. The nuclear family is the economic and residential unit. The expectation is that the marriage should last for the lifetime of the spouses, although increasingly there are provisions for exceptional cases termed failure. Other popular expectations are that the woman will be the socializing agent and the male will be the economic agent. This thesis explores the changing nature of families and marriage.

Heats Of Combustion Of Alpha-Methylstyrene Oligomers, Dale Keith Humbert Apr 1972

Heats Of Combustion Of Alpha-Methylstyrene Oligomers, Dale Keith Humbert

Masters Theses

Introduction

The heat of polymerization (∆Hp) of α-methylstyrene (AMS) has been a source of study for many years. The structure of AMS is shown in Figure 1.

The first quantitative work was done by Roberts and Jessup.1 Their values were more positive than those theoretically calculated by Flory2 and compared with ∆Hp data of other systems. This was not totally unexpected and could be satisfactorily explained on the basis of steric hindrance and loss of resonance energy of conjugation. This steric hindrance arose from "head-to-tail" polymerization of the 1, 1-disubstituted ethylene structure.3 Their data …
