Implications Of Racism For Social Work Practice, Seymour Mirelowitz May 1979

Implications Of Racism For Social Work Practice, Seymour Mirelowitz

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This paper examines school and practice issues in social work in relationship to the concepts of ethnicity, minority groups, racism, and institutional racism. Operational definitions to establish conceptual clarity are also developed. The statistical aspects of progression vis-a-vis cultural diversity in social work institutions, enrollment in schools of social work, and representation on the faculty of schools of social work are studied. Social policy and the implementation of change in social work practice and education are then dealt with in relation to the current reality of the profession and the society in which it functions.

Three Mile Island - A Personal Report, James R. Hudson

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

March 29, 1979 was the first day of the spring term at The Pennsylvania State University--Capitol Campus. I had joined a car pool and as we drove from Lancaster to Middletown the conversation centered on the news from Three Mile Island. We were clearly unaware of the severity of the problem, but two of the riders were active in anti-nuclear energy organizations. They were grim and intense. Their central concern at the moment was how to mobilize the campus in some way to respond to the potential hazard. There was a certain deja vu in the themes of the conversation. …

The Social Policy Of Denial: Unemployment In Israel, Harris Chaiklin May 1979

The Social Policy Of Denial: Unemployment In Israel, Harris Chaiklin

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

When reality does not match the dream nations tend to suffer. In Israel unemployment compromises social democratic ideals. The country oscillates between bombast and despair. Official data is not trusted. Those who leave Russia on Israeli visas and do not come are "dropouts." Those who leave Israel for other countries are "yordim." Those who go to work every day when there is nothing to do are draining the nation with "hidden unemployment." These are terms of derision. Some of the difficulty with unemployment data and understanding Israeli response to the problem may be for security reasons. Israelis have lived in …

Loneliness And Deprivation: The Case Of Roman Catholic Priests, John F. Schnabel, John P. Koval May 1979

Loneliness And Deprivation: The Case Of Roman Catholic Priests, John F. Schnabel, John P. Koval

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Using Roman Catholic Priests as a test in order to control for deprivation in relationships of intimacy while maximizing the need for social network relationships, an examination was made of their differential experience of loneliness.

The evidence suggested repeatedly that priests were more likely to experience loneliness as a serious problem when they perceived that the social network which they regarded as most significant in their lives (the Church) placed some kind of structural limitation on the extent of their involvement in it. Factors, for example, which help determine the individual priest's place in the structure of the Church are: …

Implications From Psycholinguistics For Secondary Reading, W. John Harker Apr 1979

Implications From Psycholinguistics For Secondary Reading, W. John Harker

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Over the past decade, increasing interest has been shown in the implications of psycholinguistics for understanding the reading process. Mainly through the work of Goodman (1969; 1970) and Smith (1971; 1975), linguistic and psychological knowledge have been combined to describe the reading process of mature readers and the process through which children learn to read. The educational implications of this psycholinguistic model have been largely concerned with the learning-to-read process of elementary school children. But significant implications for secondary developmental reading instruction arc suggested as well. It is the purpose of this paper to identify and explore some of these …

Word Analogies: An Overlooked Reading Aid, Jerry Axelrod Apr 1979

Word Analogies: An Overlooked Reading Aid, Jerry Axelrod

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Few cues give a teacher a more valid or quicker insight into her students' thinking abilities than word analogies. The pupils' mental manipulations· or lack thereof reveal to the aware and perceptive teacher a usually accurate idea of the extent to which her pupils will be able to perform. Picture analogies for nonreaders and word analogies for literate pupils can be used informally by the classroom teachers to approximate just how much pupils, individually, are capable of learning in an academic situation.

Remedial College Freshmen English Students: Description And Characteristics, Mark E. Thompson, Bonnie C. Plummer Apr 1979

Remedial College Freshmen English Students: Description And Characteristics, Mark E. Thompson, Bonnie C. Plummer

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This report is an analysis of the characteristics found among students in remedial, freshman English classes at a large, mid-south, regional university. At the end of the 1977 Spring Semester, 187 students from 13 remedial, freshman English classes were analyzed in terms of ability, motivation to attend classes and career choice (declared or undeclared majors). These variables were analyzed and compared to achievement levels (grades).

Peer-Tutoring: Learning Boon Or Exploitation Of The Tutor?, Helen Howell Apr 1979

Peer-Tutoring: Learning Boon Or Exploitation Of The Tutor?, Helen Howell

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The concept of peer tutoring is not new. Its use has been traced back through centuries. Probably all elementary school teachers have used it at some time-usually in the brief, informal situation of having Billy help Jimmy with some specific problem or skill need. In recent years, the idea has expanded and the more formal peer-tutoring or peer-mediated instruction concept has received attention and support. This increased interest in peer-tutoring appears to have been prompted by the need to individualize instruction and to do so as economically as possible.

Reinforcement Psychology And The Market Environment, Richard P. Eastman Apr 1979

Reinforcement Psychology And The Market Environment, Richard P. Eastman

Masters Theses

A functional analysis of behavior requires a monopoly of controlling variables. Where contingency-control is mutual, i.e., where there is mutual shaping of shaping, functional analysis of contingency control is impossible. Weingarten and Mechner's notion of 'dependent-contingency* analysis restores some sense here, but not enough to salvage grandiose schemes for monopolistically controlled experimental cultures.

Utopian behaviorists do not realize the scope of functions performed by markets in the human environment. Prediction and control of a dependent-variable culture requires prior elimination of entrepreneurship, (black) markets, and the far-reaching division of labor that is provided only by market coordination. Under such a system, …
