The Impact Of Directly Mailed Family Planning Materials To Afdc Welfare Mothers, Paul J. Placek Apr 1974

The Impact Of Directly Mailed Family Planning Materials To Afdc Welfare Mothers, Paul J. Placek

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Excerpt from the full-text article:

Communications research has repeatedly documented the fact that people are affected by the various forms of mass media, and so family planning programs have begun to use television (Hutchinson, 1970), radio, movies, posters, telephones (Dabbs and Neiger, 1970), newspapers, and various combinations of these media (Clark and Morris, 1972; Chase, 1972; Balakrishnan, 1967; Takeshita, 1966; Cernada and Lu, 1972) in transmitting the message of family planning. Our present media focus, however, involves direct mailing, which in contrast to other media, often has the advantages of being sent by an authoritative or prestigious source, is relatively …

Pandora's Box: The Liberation Of Welfare Mothers, Bonnie Morel Edington Apr 1974

Pandora's Box: The Liberation Of Welfare Mothers, Bonnie Morel Edington

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Excerpt from the full-text article:

The non-"misandrist" mainstream of the women's movement has suggested that, more than women being liberated from male oppression, both sexes need to be liberated from the tyranny of culturally determined sex roles, the last bastion of ascribed status. If all social roles were androgynous they could be based on more relevant criteria. For example, children would be encouraged to develop skills and talents without regard for their "appropriateness" to gender, the male-female ratio in the work force and in nearly all specific occupations would be virtually equal, pay would be equal, and the number of …

The Effects Of Molecular Weight, Agitation And Zeta Potential Of Retention Aids On Filler Retention, Trieu Nguyen Jan 1974

The Effects Of Molecular Weight, Agitation And Zeta Potential Of Retention Aids On Filler Retention, Trieu Nguyen

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

When it comes to filler retention, the most frequently studied parameters are: Molecular weight of the retention aid, degree of agitation, and zeta potential.

Alum, as an electrolyte, and various polymers of the same chemical structure, but different molecular weights were evaluated for their performances in retaining TiO2. Different degrees of agitation were introduced to the stock to investigate the effect of turbulence on retention, and, finally, zeta potential was varied to observe its effect.

Higher molecular weight polymer was found to produce better retention. On the other hand, agitation reduced it. Retention seemed to be favorable with …

P-V-S: A New Approach To Teaching Communication Skills, Bruce A. Lloyd Jan 1974

P-V-S: A New Approach To Teaching Communication Skills, Bruce A. Lloyd

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Conscientious teachers are constantly searching for viable procedures which will enhance pupil creativity in oral and written expression. Typically such teachers attempt to avoid the sterile, stereotyped, workbook-oriented language "lessons" and endeavor to bring into their classrooms valuable activities which provide some direction but do not stifle pupil interest or creativity. Furthermore, because the acquisition of speaking and writing skills is being encouraged in modern classroom instructional programs, those media which assist the teacher are in ever-increasing demand.

Lifelong Education And General And Liberal Studies, Mildred B. Erickson

Perspectives (1969-1979)

Annual meetings of learned groups provide individuals with an opportunity to examine their purposes and ideas and to find challenge, support and renewal among their colleagues. In the October Association for General and Liberal Studies annual meeting we are examining two concepts and their interrelationships-lifelong education and general and liberal studies. The conference itself is an experiment in lifelong, continuing, recurrent education. While neither movement is new, each is in a position for strong revival. The conscientious professor who must face nine to twelve classes each week has long recognized the need for recurrent renewal; now the need is being …

Recycling The Humanities Faculty: The Momentary Memoirs Of A Star-Trekking Pilgrim To The Ruins Of Troy, Bryan Lindsay

Perspectives (1969-1979)

Reading back over that I find myself feeling strangely in the face of fiction. Not so, though, I promise you. The quotes are paraphrased, granted, since I don't have total recall, but the style, the content, the interest and dedication are all there. This is the recycling of the Interdisciplinary Humanities faculty at Converse. It might also be considered as the reorienting of the Humanities students at Converse, if they were aware of another humanities prior to this. Most of them find the Contemporary Humanities, or Interdisciplinary Humanities, a new ball of wax, and they are to a man ( …

Sociology And Social Work: Science And Art, Robert D. Leighninger, Leslie H. Leighninger, Robert M. Pankin Jan 1974

Sociology And Social Work: Science And Art, Robert D. Leighninger, Leslie H. Leighninger, Robert M. Pankin

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Excerpt from the full-text article:

We live in an age of specialization and usually find it beneficial, perhaps even essential. However, we have been aware since Marx's time at least that the division of labor has its cost. And though we may be a long way from the unconpartmentalized utopia where an individual might do four different kinds of work in a single day, we cannot afford to let the assumptions which underlie the separation of important jobs and functions go without periodic reexamination. The separation of the work of the sociologist (or, indeed, any social scientist) and the social …

Social Work, Social Welfare, And The American Family, Ronald A. Feldman Oct 1973

Social Work, Social Welfare, And The American Family, Ronald A. Feldman

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The following discussion proceeds from two basic premises: (1) that the family constitutes one of the most basic units of social structure in contemporary American society, and (2) that the social work profession represents a major, if not the primary, institutional mechanism for coping with the myriad of social problems encountered by American families. The former premise is readily substantiated in view of the observation that the vast majority (over 9O%) of American men and women are married at least once in their lifetimes. However, since family units oftentimes experience severe difficulty in performing key functions and, indeed, in maintaining …
