The Social Construction Of Professional Knowledge: Social Work Ideology, 1956-1973, Danny L. Jorgensen
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
This paper reports on patterns and trends of ideological advocacy in social work. Findings from a content analysis of Social Work indicate that conceptions of this service profession have changed over a recent eighteen year period. Changes in professional meanings are analyzed in terms of authors' educational status, employment setting, and the problematic topics they discussed. This analysis supports a process model of reality construction in professional arenas and provides implications for the self-conscious management of professional imagery.

March 29, 1979 was the first day of the spring term at The Pennsylvania State University--Capitol Campus. I had joined a car pool and as we drove from Lancaster to Middletown the conversation centered on the news from Three Mile Island. We were clearly unaware of the severity of the problem, but two of the riders were active in anti-nuclear energy organizations. They were grim and intense. Their central concern at the moment was how to mobilize the campus in some way to respond to the potential hazard. There was a certain deja vu in the themes of the conversation. …

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
William S. Palmer is Professor of Reading and Language Arts at the University of NC?rth Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is well known for his contributions to professional journals in the field of reading and English education. He is author of Teaching Reading to High School Students.
In his contribution to this column, Professor Palmer points out some of the oversimplication which results from basing reading programs upon the taxonomic model. He carefully explores the stages of beginning reading, and he sets these in a useful historical perspective. In doing so, he avoids the Aristotelian either/or dichotomy in his …

Science Fiction: The Future In The Classroom, Joan B. Grady
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Science fiction is a literary genre that has gained more respectability in the past few years than it had experienced previously. One can remember trying to find examples of this genre to read. Jules Verne and H. G. Wells could be found if one were educated enough in the genre to seek out these authors. When pressed, a librarian might try to foist Plato's Republic or More's Utopia off on the neophyte science fiction seeker. For the most part, those interested in this genre had to seek outside the confines of the public library to find examples of science fiction …
Effectiveness Procedures For Teaching Reference Study Skills, Donald C. Cushenbery
Effectiveness Procedures For Teaching Reference Study Skills, Donald C. Cushenbery
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
In many elementary developmental reading programs, the areas of word attack and comprehension traditionally receive major attention with respect to reading skills instruction. In some other cases there is much emphasis with respect to phonics and other forms of decoding with less priority given to comprehension. Typically, the skill area receiving the least amount of importance is that of reference study skills since it is assumed by some teachers that if a student is efficient in word attack and comprehension, he/she will naturally transmit these skills to assignments dealing with library resources.

Homosexuality: A Social Worker's Imbroglio, Carol Tully, Joyce C. Albro
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Few members of our society take time to put into historical context their prejudices about homosexuality. This article examines the historical context of these prejudices as well as how social workers may become co-opted by society into overlooking the social service needs of homosexual clients. How to combat institutional homophobia is also discussed.

Lifelong Learning And The World Of Work, Ivan Charner
Lifelong Learning And The World Of Work, Ivan Charner
Perspectives (1969-1979)
This editorial answers three basic questions about the relief education program. Why the program is important?, how the program operates? and who participates in the program? A similar editorial could be written today about the growing number of learning opportunities available to workers and the growing number of participants in such programs. This essay represents such an effort. Although in more breadth and in more detail than the 1933 editorial, I will focus on the same basic questions. First, why should lifelong learning for workers be advanced? Second, how have opportunities for learning been made available to working adults? and …

Tapping The Potentials Of Interdisciplinary Studies In A Freshman Core Program, William A. Sadler Jr.
Perspectives (1969-1979)
This article will discuss an innovative Interdisciplinary Freshman Core Program that has been developing for five years at a small liberal arts college in the New York metropolitan area. The significance of this program extends beyond the campus of Bloomfield College, for it exemplifies one way to meet productively some of the serious issues now confronting higher education across the country. Before examining this program, let me introduce you to this College in terms of its precarious position at the start of its second hundred years of existence.
The Liberating Function Of Philosophy In Education, Leonard M. Fleck
The Liberating Function Of Philosophy In Education, Leonard M. Fleck
Perspectives (1969-1979)
"But wherever ideas are effective, there is freedom"1
The primary intent of this paper is not to advance or defend any novel philosophical theses. Rather, the purpose is to provide what I will call a "philosophic service" for undergraduate teachers of philosophy. More specifically, I am concerned both with the continued decline of interest in the liberal arts (philosophy in particular) among undergraduates and with the apparent inability of many teachers of the liberal arts to articulate satisfactorily a rationale for the pursuit of the liberal arts. In this paper I cannot analyze all the complex economic and socio-cultural …
