Effects Of The Degree And Type Of Sizing On The Dyeing Of Paper, J. Pease
Effects Of The Degree And Type Of Sizing On The Dyeing Of Paper, J. Pease
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
A study was made comparing papers dyed in a rosin/alum sized system to papers dyed in two alkaline sized systems. The alkaline sizes chosen were alkyl ketene dimer and alkenyl succinic anhydride. The dye types studied were acid, basic, anionic direct, and cationic direct. The degree of sizing was varied for each sizing type to see if the amount of sizing would effect dye retention. The papers dyed with anionic and cationic direct dyes and the basic dye were not significantly effected by sizing type of sizing degree. The direct dyes did give a lighter shade when the rosin size …
Foreign Graduate Students’ Political Participation In Two Different Political Environments, Ragaa Ibrahim Selim
Foreign Graduate Students’ Political Participation In Two Different Political Environments, Ragaa Ibrahim Selim
Masters Theses
Student political activism as an area of study has become less attractive to Western writers because of the sharp decline in student activism that was characteristic of the 60s. While the Western nations now discuss student activism as historical events, countries in the developing world are still engulfed with student political activism.
This research is comparative and analytic. It shows that the issue at stake in a political environment is more significant than the political environment itself; that students from the developing world are much more politically active than their counterparts in the developed world; that political participation is an …

Writing Apprehension And Writing Intensity In An Industrial Organization, Kaye P. Bennett
Writing Apprehension And Writing Intensity In An Industrial Organization, Kaye P. Bennett
Masters Theses
This study hypothesized that high writing apprehensive subjects would differ significantly from low writing apprehensive subjects in regard to the writing intensity of their jobs. A random sample of 143 people employed in clerical, technical, secretarial, professional, supervisory, or administrative positions in one midwestern company was studied. Subjects completed the Writing Apprehension Test and the Writing Intensity Questionnaire. The latter was designed for this study to measure the amount and type of writing projects subjects produced, plus audience and deadline pressure. A significant difference (p = .004) was seen in the mean writing intensity scores between high apprehensives (n = …

Speech Results Following Modified Pharyngeal Flap Surgery, Karen S. Zalewski
Masters Theses
It is the purpose of this study to provide a descriptive analysis of 13 patients who have undergone a modified pharyngeal flap surgery completed by one plastic surgeon. Variables associated with the speech of these individuals were based on four measures, including a questionnaire, the Iowa Pressure Articulation Test, the screening portion of the Templin-Darley Test of Articulation, and listener ratings of audio-taped post-surgical speech samples.
Of the eight subject variables studied, two variables were found to be closely associated with speech results. These variables included number of surgeries performed on subjects and number of years in speech therapy. The …

The Evangelical High Church: A Moderate Answer To The Oxford Movement, David Wayne Carmicheal
The Evangelical High Church: A Moderate Answer To The Oxford Movement, David Wayne Carmicheal
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to investigate the various reactions to the Oxford Movement among the Evangelicals of England; and to determine whether those Evangelicals who did not react by becoming Low Churchmen attempted to define a new and unique position for the Anglican Church. A certain group of Evangelicals, some of whom referred to themselves as Evangelical High Churchmen, did not simply reject the High and Low Church extremes, but attempted to define a moderate position which embraced aspects of both Low Church Evangelicalism and Tractarianism. This group helped prepare the way for the Anglican Church to emerge, …
Political Integration: A National Language For Malaysia, Zairina Othman
Political Integration: A National Language For Malaysia, Zairina Othman
Masters Theses
This study investigates the need of a national language policy to promote political integration in a new nation, using Malaysia as an example. The thesis attempts to explain why Bahasa Malaysia was chosen as the national language and how its implementation as the prime language of political, social, and economic communication has contributed towards national political unity and stability in Malaysia. Three propositions are presented and investigated in support of the thesis.
The first proposition suggests that an acceptable national language helps foster political integration in a culturally pluralistic society. The primary objective would be to replace a specific ethnocultural …

Enliven History With Books, Karla Hawkins Wendelin
Enliven History With Books, Karla Hawkins Wendelin
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Students often consider history to be dull and the textbooks difficult. Because of the many trade books available, however, history can be brought to life. These books create characters, both real and fictional, within settings of actual historical events. Not only are authentic details given, but the motivations underlying a chronology of causes and effects are presented in readable fashion that may be quite different from textbook material.

The Influence Of Perceived Teachers' And Parents' Expectations On Student Achievement, William Zollweg
The Influence Of Perceived Teachers' And Parents' Expectations On Student Achievement, William Zollweg
Dissertations
This study investigates the influence of perceived teacher and parent expectations on student achievement. Additionally, variations in perceived expectations were measured for students with different sex, race, and socioeconomic background. The sample population consisted of 283 tenth-grade students in a large midwestern school district. Results indicate that students with higher teacher and parent perceived expectations score higher on standardized tests of reading achievement. Furthermore, student perception of teacher and parent expectation varied directly with socioeconomic status.
Collective Bargaining And The Building Principal: A Case Study, Rosemary Ervine
Collective Bargaining And The Building Principal: A Case Study, Rosemary Ervine
Masters Theses
The purpose of this report is to describe the role of a school building principal in the collective bargaining process and consider the affects of the collective bargaining process on the role and function of the building principal. Perspective and data were gained by participation as a building principal representative on the administrative bargaining team for the Kentwood Public Schools in their negotiations with the Kentwood Education Association during the summer of 1982. This report serves as a case study of that experience.
Collective bargaining is introduced in Chapter I which also includes a brief summary of its history in …
A Study Of The Mannitol Binding Protein Active Transport System And A Catabolite Repression Resistant Mutant In Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Joseph Arthur Wolff
A Study Of The Mannitol Binding Protein Active Transport System And A Catabolite Repression Resistant Mutant In Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Joseph Arthur Wolff
Masters Theses
Cold-shock extraction procedures were used for the efficient release of mannitol binding protein. Magnesium chloride and cold-shock released 92% of the total whole cell mannitol binding protein activity without release of detectable cytoplasmic marker protein glucose-6- phosphate dehydrogenase. Arsenate inhibited mannitol uptake to the same extent as azide. The simultaneous loss and gain of mannitol binding protein activity with mannitol uptake activity in mutants and reventants respectively, was consistant with periplasmic mannitol binding protein as a required component of mannitol uptake. A catabolite repression resistant mutant for mannitol uptake was isolated and described. This mutant, designated WEP-1, escaped catabolite repression …
