Dissertations

Investigated in this descriptive study was the relationship between new car dealership customer service satisfaction ratings and dealership sales success, as measured by market penetration ratings, within a major domestic automobile company. Specifically, the first step in the study was the collection of data regarding customer service and sales success ratings earned by the total of the subject company's dealers in each of 42 geographical zones in the United States. Perceptions Of American College Students About Arabs: The Role Of Mass Media And Personal Contact In The Formation Of Stereotypes, Mansour Owaid Aljeaid

Dissertations

American students, as well as people of other nations, form perceptions of others who differ from their own cultural, racial, and social groups. These mental pictures are "stereotypes."

The purpose of this study was to identify stereotypes that American students enrolled at Western Michigan University (WMU) had about Arabs and to determine if there were differences in these stereotypes when students were classified by race, sex, level of education, age, and sources of stereotypes. Twenty-five bipolar adjectives were organized as semantic differential scales to assess students' perceptions. The instrument was either mailed or hand delivered to a sample of 400 …

This Book Reminds Me Of You: The Reader As Mentor, Andrea C. Sledge

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

You, the teacher, are the reader's mentor, whether that reader is your student, your colleague or your friend. Do Pictures Make A Difference In College Textbooks?, Brenda D. Smith, Joan M. Elifson

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

When we compare college social science textbooks popular in the 1960's with those used in the 1980's, the first change that strikes us is the proliferation of pictures. The number of pictures has not merely doubled or tripled in twenty years; in many cases pictures have increased exponentially.

Interactive Children's Literature: Movingfrom Print To Electronic Literacy, Dennis M. Adams Jul 1986

Interactive Children's Literature: Movingfrom Print To Electronic Literacy, Dennis M. Adams

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

New computer software allows children to take ownership of a story they are reading. Students change the plot, participate in the action, choose a role as a major or minor character -- or simply step aside and change the direction of the action. The combination of print, computers, visual imagery and personalized action is a strong motivation for learning about all four. Motivation is one thing, effective instruction is another. To be effective as an instructional tool, computer controlled literature must pay careful attention to both technology and instructional theory. One thing is certain, the potential is there for powerful …

Parents, Schools And Hssr, Elene S. Demos

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

As parents become more involved in the schools and as schools st rive to involve parents in meaningful ways and extend the work that is done in schools, educators should look at promising educational practices that can be reinforced in the home environment.

One of these reinforcing, supportive activIties that are feasible for all parents and children, yet do not require instructional technology, is Sustained Silent Reading, which has been effectively utilized in schools.

Ways To Foster A Home-School Partnershipin Reading, Nicholas P. Criscuolo Jul 1986

Ways To Foster A Home-School Partnershipin Reading, Nicholas P. Criscuolo

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Polls consistently show that the public gives literacy a high rating. Although many children are receiving high quality reading instruction at school, parents have a role as reinforcers. At one time, the belief was prevalent that parents should keep "hands off" any aspect of inst ruction. Teaching took place in the classroom and the place for parents was in the home. No more. It is now recognized that parents can do a great deal to support and buttress reading/language arts skills at home.

The Yorkville Emergency Alliance: One Community's Response To The Federal Budget Reductions, Michael J. Smith

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

A case study of one community's response to the Reagan budget cutbacks reveals the strengths and weaknesses of local voluntary initiatives for funding social services and replacing federal funds. The development and growth of the Yorkville Emergency Alliance is described as a private initiative of citizens living in a wealthy area of New York City. In about one and a half years, this group of residents raised over a quarter of a million dollars to attempt to replace federal funding reductions for the social services.

Homelessness: Residual, Institutional And Communal Solutions, Ron E. Roberts, Thomas Keefe

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Drawing upon demographic data and ethnographic interviews conducted by the authors, the article addresses the question, "Who are the homeless?" It identifies five kinds of homeless people and the sources of the homeless populations in the social structure. It then addresses residual and institutional policy solutions and draws on the efforts of the homeless themselves to advance a collective solution to their problems.

Retirees As Technoguides: A New Role As Shapers And Makers Of The Future, Arthur B. Shostak

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Retirees nowadays serve in many out-of-the-home roles that make astute use of their maturity, their discretion time, and their flexibility about compensation: Large numbers help as paid or voluntary aides in day care centers, health fairs, home health care, hospice programs, nursing homes, and the vital like.

A brand new role that might appeal to many would have them learn and practice the craft of technology assessment and the process of technology diffusion: With these tools retirees could serve as technoguides, or paid or voluntary aides in the testing, evaluating, and adapting of new products and services to the needs …

The Black Child, His Dialect, And His Reading, William S. O'Brube Apr 1986

The Black Child, His Dialect, And His Reading, William S. O'Brube

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The language of the black child, his dialect, has for years been a drawback for the school age child. The child who speaks a black dialect has come a long way in learning "his" language and perhaps feels he has mastered it rather well. But when he enters school, he often discovers that his language is unacceptable at best and openly rejected at worst. If his language is not rejected, it is rarely if ever drawn upon and utilized in the materials and learning activities of the school.

Historically, black children have been required to read, or attempt to read, …

Dual-Purpose Activity Versus Single-Purpose Activity In An Institutionalized Geriatric Population, Rita M. Yoder Apr 1986

Dual-Purpose Activity Versus Single-Purpose Activity In An Institutionalized Geriatric Population, Rita M. Yoder

Masters Theses

The use of purposeful, goal-directed activity has traditionally been a central theme for occupational therapy. In dual-purpose activity the participant has two goals: successful task completion and the making of adaptive responses in the activity process. This study compares the extent to which a dual-purpose activity (stirring for the purpose of exercise and baking cookies) enhances performance in contrast to a single-purpose activity (stirring for the purpose of exercise alone) in an institutionalized geriatric population.

Thirty women between 70 and 92 years of age were randomly assigned to either the single- or dual-purpose activity. Duration, exertion, and discontinuities were measured …

The Michigan Intermediate School District Superintendent: A Unique Job Role, Lanny Ray Johnston Apr 1986

The Michigan Intermediate School District Superintendent: A Unique Job Role, Lanny Ray Johnston

Masters Theses

One of the job roles in Michigan's system of public education is that of the Intermediate School District Superintendent. However, the definition of this job role and the skills required to function in it are unclear for those striving to attain an intermediate school district superintendency. This lack of clarity in the areas of interpersonal, conceptual, and technical skills, makes career planning difficult. In an effort to improve this situation, this intern elected to investigate the role of the intermediate superintendent as a public school, high management/leadership/administrative position.

The outcome of this investigation includes: (a) a clearer perspective of the …

Purpose. Capable management of a school system requires the manipulation of massive and ever-growing amounts of information. As the information burden increases, school administrators have the availability of new technological tools. Using the computer competencies developed by Mims (1983), this study examines the knowledge and skills and the degree of training school administrators need to meet the challange of this new technology. Once identified, these competencies and the degree of training necessary to effectively perform them could be helpful to universities, colleges, and all persons involved in the preparation and in-service of school administrators.

The Use Of Microcomputer Programs To Improve The Reliability And Validity Of Content Analysis In Evaluation, Richard D. Frisbie Apr 1986

The Use Of Microcomputer Programs To Improve The Reliability And Validity Of Content Analysis In Evaluation, Richard D. Frisbie

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to advance the body of knowledge about how practicing evaluators can use microcomputer programs to obtain reliable and valid content analyses of responses to open-ended survey questions. This is important because practitioners often analyze such responses as part of larger evaluation efforts. To address this general problem, content analysis experts have developed methods of survey and discovery to help delineate new category systems and obtain codes for responses based on existing categories. Fortunately, some of the methods can be implemented with general purpose microcomputer programs. For example, key words out of context--word lists--can be …
