Ribtickling Literature: Educational Implications For Joke And Riddle Books In The Elementary Classroom, Patricia Wilson, Karen Kutiper
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
During a recent visit to an elementary school we delighted in the number of classrooms which featured writing and reading centers. One innovative third grade teacher went a step further and provided her students with a lively outlet for their creative skills in the "Humor Corner." As we entered the classroom, two youngsters were enjoying jokes produced by classmates and browsing through a few of the riddle books on display. Holding The Biggest Riddle Book in the World (Rosenbloom, 1976), one student greeted us with: "I bet you can't answer this one! What does an envelope say when you lick …

The Fifty Percent Divorce Rate: Deconstructing A Myth, Dennis L. Peck
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
An overview of competing perceptions about divorce in the United States establishes the basis for a discussion of the incidence of divorce, divorce rates, and the public myth of a 50 percent divorce rate. A partial explanation for the acceptance of this myth is offered through a discussion of the salience of attitude as well as other public issues.

Homelessness: The Service Providers' Perspective On Blaming The Victim, Elizabeth Tracy, Randy Stoecker
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Service providers who work with the homeless are frequently characterized as victim blamers. Eighteen service providers who work with homeless people were interviewed. The victim-blaming typification oversimplifies service providers' views on homelessness and of the individuals their programs serve. Service providers have a wholistic analysis of homelessness which encompasses both individual and systemic components.

Size Imperfections In One-Dimensional Periodic Optical Arrays, Yan Zhong
Size Imperfections In One-Dimensional Periodic Optical Arrays, Yan Zhong
Masters Theses
The concepts of band theory for electrons can also be employed to describe the behavior of electromagnetic waves propagating in periodic dielectric structures. These periodic structures can produce photonic band gaps in which the propagation of electromagnetic waves is strictly prohibited. The introduction of impurities in such system gives rise to donor and acceptor gap modes in electron system and to energy gap modes in photonic system.
In my thesis, the impurity modes in one-dimensional, periodic, dielectric system will be studied. These modes are introduced in the 1-d dielectric structure by altering the thickness of one slab in an otherwise …
Contracts In Conflict: Perestroika And The Decline Of Soviet Legitimacy, Karl Glenn Hokenmaier
Contracts In Conflict: Perestroika And The Decline Of Soviet Legitimacy, Karl Glenn Hokenmaier
Masters Theses
Gorbachev's perception of the Soviet Union's socio-economic crisis and his subsequent actions to correct the economy and reform the political system were linked with attempts to renegotiate the social contract between the state and the Soviet people. However, reformulation of the social contract was incompatible with the conditions of a second arrangement between the leadership and the nomenklatura--the Soviet ruling class. The failure of Gorbachev's reforms and the decline of Soviet legitimacy were linked to the irreconcilability of the nomenklatura's "political contract" and the social contract.
The construct of the social contract was utilized to represent the Soviet state-society relationship …
Attitudes Of Occupational Therapy Students Toward The Mentally Disabled, Patricia Mccarthy
Attitudes Of Occupational Therapy Students Toward The Mentally Disabled, Patricia Mccarthy
Masters Theses
Thirty-nine undergraduate occupational therapy and fifty-seven entry-level graduate occupational therapy students from eight randomly selected academic programs were surveyed using the Opinions About Mental Illness Scales ([OMI], Cohen and Struening, 1959) and the Mental Health Information Questionnaire ([MHIQ], Nunnally, 1961). Results revealed that both student groups’ knowledge toward the mentally disabled was more similar to the general public’s knowledge. Using a one-tailed t-test to compare the MHIQ factors revealed there was no statistically significant difference between the occupational therapy student groups.
Both student groups’ OMI factor scores were similar to an expert group for Factors A B, and D; however, …

Using Thermophilic Bacteria To Produce Enzymes For Wood Pulping, Robert A. Debelak Jr.
Using Thermophilic Bacteria To Produce Enzymes For Wood Pulping, Robert A. Debelak Jr.
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
The objective of this Senior Thesis Project was to determine if thermophilic (heat loving) bacteria are capable of producing enzymes to break down lignin. Currently known ligninases produced by white-rot fungi are destroyed by high temperatures, and are only useful for pre-treatments in refiner mechanical pulping. Thermophilic lignin-degrading enzymes could potentially be useful in a high temperature pulping process.
Milled wood lignin was isolated from birch to be used in bacterial cultures. The lignin would serve as the only source of carbon for the bacteria, so their growth would depend on their ability to utilize the lignin for food. Standard …

Proprietary Vocabulary Acquisition: A Creative, Thematic Adventure, Marjorie J. Wynn
Proprietary Vocabulary Acquisition: A Creative, Thematic Adventure, Marjorie J. Wynn
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Teachers have discovered that proprietary vocabulary acquisition by elementary students is enhanced through participation in a creative, thematic approach to learning. Proprietary vocabulary is a collection of words over which the owner has mastery of understanding in listening and reading and mastery of use in speaking and writing. This definition is based on the meaning of proprietor, an owner who has mastery and control over a possession, and vocabulary, a stock of words.

Offense Perceived, Appropriate Actions And Possible Solutions: A Research Of Censorship, Sharon K. Van Poolen
Masters Theses
Students at Western Michigan University were asked via a survey to read lyrics and indicate an offensiveness rating. Lyrics containing vulgar or sexual language or derogatory statements about religion received higher offensive ratings. Actions deemed acceptable in response to offensive lyrics include picketing and boycotting. Prevalent themes identified in the lyrics are antagonism toward religion, sexism and unhealthy sexual relations. Groups cited most frequently as potentially harmed by lyrics are children 5-12, adolescents and women. Respondents were questioned about participation in certain activities and what alternatives to direct censorship are acceptable. Most would prefer to be involved indirectly, for example, …
The Job Search Process In Michigan 1990-1991, Zhuoyan Gu
The Job Search Process In Michigan 1990-1991, Zhuoyan Gu
Dissertations
Two statewide general public surveys of non-retired adults conducted in March of 1990 and 1991 were analyzed to examine patterns of job search activity. Primary attention was placed on the 1991 survey. The core questions asked were about preferences for future job search media in terms of the respondents' past job seeking experiences . The general pattern observed was a movement away from the public state employment service towards "informal" contacts. There were, however, important differences in terms of the respondents' age, sex, education, occupation, and prior employment experiences.
