Wet Strength Resins, Todd Meyers
Wet Strength Resins, Todd Meyers
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
Wet strength is defined as a paper which has extraordinary resistance to rupture or disintegration when saturated with water. This definition has been interpreted as if a paper sample retains more than 15% of its dry strength when wetted, it can be considered to have wet strength properties.
Wet strength resins are chemicals that aid in wet strength, and they have been around since the 1940's. These wet strength resins help to protect paper and paper products from breaking down in the presence of water and high humidity. There are many uses for wet strength resins these days, Some of …

The Quantitative Evaluation Of Micro-Coating Composition Using Infrared Spectroscopy, James Griffith
The Quantitative Evaluation Of Micro-Coating Composition Using Infrared Spectroscopy, James Griffith
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
A technique has been developed through which micro-compositional and quantitative analysis of paper coatings are possible. The uniqueness of this method lies in its ability to isolate and measure papercoating component distribution for a smaller sample than has been possible in the past. Paper coating characteristics are identifiable by combining common microscopy techniques with infrared spectroscopy. The internal structure of the sheet is preserved during analysis by allowing the paper sample to be embedded using traditional techniques and then sectioned using an ultra-microtome. This analysis procedure is unlike most methods for paper coating analysis and does provide accurate representation of …

Factors Influencing The Hiring Of Women As Community College Chief Executive Officers, Diane Chaddock
Factors Influencing The Hiring Of Women As Community College Chief Executive Officers, Diane Chaddock
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to provide information, in the community college setting, about the boards of trustees who hire the leaders o f these institutions, and to provide information about the men and women who have been successful in obtaining these positions.
Four basic hypotheses underlie this research. They are: (1) there is a difference in the characteristics of male and female community college presidents; (2) there is a difference in the selection processes which lead to the hiring of male community college presidents compared to those processes which lead to the hiring of female presidents; (3) there …
A Study Of The Correlation Between Per Pupil Funding And Student Achievement In The State Of Michigan, Douglas Harold Snyder
A Study Of The Correlation Between Per Pupil Funding And Student Achievement In The State Of Michigan, Douglas Harold Snyder
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate if a relationship existed between per pupil funding levels and achievement levels of students in the state of Michigan. The study sought to apply objective, systematic research techniques to a question which receives much emotional, unscientific discussion. To that end, the study asked the question whether a connection existed between student achievement as measured by Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) tests and the amount of per pupil funding in the student’s school district.
In an attempt to address these concerns this study examined two sets of variables. One set represented educational effectiveness …
Characterization And Expression Of Pseudomonas Fluorescens L-Arabinose Dehydrogenase: Genetic Elements In Pseudomonas Putida, Carol M. Wierenga
Characterization And Expression Of Pseudomonas Fluorescens L-Arabinose Dehydrogenase: Genetic Elements In Pseudomonas Putida, Carol M. Wierenga
Masters Theses
An assay based on the spectrophotometeric properties of NAD/NADH was developed to detect the degradation of L-arabinose to L-arabinolactone. This assay was used to determine the expression of the L-arabinose utilization genes contained in Pseudomonas fluorescens and in the plasmid, designated pPZ221, contained in Pseudomonas putida. The results from this assay, in conjunction with various growth kinetics, indicate that pPZ221 is inducible and repressible for L-arabinose utilization. Thus, the P. fluorescens chromosomal insert in pPZ221 for L-arabinose utilization does appear to contain the regulatory genes necessary for controlling the expression of an L-arabinose operon.
Lost In The Fifties: A Study Of Collected Memories, Janelle L. Wilson
Lost In The Fifties: A Study Of Collected Memories, Janelle L. Wilson
Dissertations
This is a study of ordinary people's recollections of the decade of the nineteen fifties. The theoretical concepts of collective memory and collected memories guide design and analysis. Unstructured interviews with 33 individuals who grew up in America in that decade were conducted. The snowball method identified potential informants. The data from these interviews, combined with secondary sources on that time period, served to reconstruct this decade. A number of themes emerged from the data; the decade was seen: as an apolitical time, as fun and innocent, as fearful with respect to atomic weaponry and Communists, as problematic for race …
Beliefs And Perceptions Of Michigan Superintendents Toward Females Advancing In The Ranks: Perspectives To Increase The Minority Pool, Dennis J. Stanek
Beliefs And Perceptions Of Michigan Superintendents Toward Females Advancing In The Ranks: Perspectives To Increase The Minority Pool, Dennis J. Stanek
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine potential factors which affect the advancement of females in the role of superintendent. With the research pointing to a variety of causes for the low percentage of female superintendents, the reason for this study was to make various groups in leadership positions aware of such factors.
Three research questions were studied:
1. Do practicing K-12 male superintendents in Michigan possess significantly different beliefs and perceptions toward female superintendents than do practicing female superintendents?
2. What experiences did the respondent have in working with a female superintendent?
3. What perceptions do K-12 superintendents …
Personal Interviews Vs. Awareness: A Health Promotion Program For Behavior Change, Elizabeth Klein
Personal Interviews Vs. Awareness: A Health Promotion Program For Behavior Change, Elizabeth Klein
Honors Theses
In the United States, heart disease is currently the number one cause of death in the adult population (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 1991). Unlike many of the major causes of death, heart disease is largely preventable through changes in health related behaviors. Although a portion of heart disease risk is attributed to genetics, the primary cause of heart disease development lies in the eating habits, exercise behaviors, and smoking habits of the individual.

The Nature Of Law And Its Effects On Certain Criminal Acts: A Comparative Study Of Saudi Arabia And The State Of Michigan, Abdulrahman Almejel Alfaraj
Masters Theses
The nature of law and its effects on certain criminal acts was the focus of this study. In this study the researcher compared the effect of two laws: (1) Saudi Arabia law which is a sacred law, and (2) the State of Michigan law which is a secular law. This comparative was on three criminal acts: (1) Homicide, (2) Rape, and (3) Theft. The data for this study were based on secondary data obtained through records available to the public. The purpose of this study is to examine and to compare the nature of punishment for crime and its effects …
Race And Language On A College Campus, William H. Dozier
Race And Language On A College Campus, William H. Dozier
Masters Theses
This research was used to measure the attitudes of students toward African American English at a predominantly European American University. It was hypothesized that significant differences would be found between the responses of the African American and European American students. Using a random telephone survey of the population, three (Language Legitimacy, Language Acceptance, and Cultural Value) of the four hypotheses were found to be significant. The fourth hypothesis (Employment Inhibition) was rejected indicating that both groups felt language was used as an employment stratification device. The data showed that although there were significant differences in the attitudes by race over …
Structural Effects On Micellar Catalyzed Hydrolysis Of Hydroxamic Acids With Perfluorooctanoic Acid As Surfactant, Xing Zhang
Masters Theses
This thesis demonstrated the structural effects on micellar catalyzed hydrolysis of hydroxamic acids with prefluorooctanoic acid as the reactive counterion surfactant in aqueous acetonitrile solution.
For different hydroxamic acids, the observed pseudo-first order rate constant-surfactant concentration profiles were obtained and were used in the determination of critical micellar concentrations (cmc).
The micellar catalytic effect was satisfactorily explained by the pseudo-phase ion exchange (PPIE) model. The PPIE model was successfully applied in the determination of the reaction rate constants both in the water phase and in micellar pseudo-phase.
Further investigation into more appropriate hydroxamic acids is suggested in order to obtain …

A Study Of The Awareness And Understanding Of Distance Education By Leadership Roles At Community Colleges In Michigan, Douglas H. Lape
Dissertations
Community colleges are faced with the challenge of providing educational opportunities to an increasing and diverse population at a time of educational reform and decreasing financial resources. The colleges are expected to meet the changing needs of the communities they serve through open access, a diversity of high quality courses, and with schedules that accommodate the life styles of their students.
The study was designed to answer the following research question: Are there differences between the five leadership role groups, at Michigan’s 29 community colleges, regarding levels of awareness and understanding about distance education as a means of providing courses …

Is The "Underclass" Really A Class?, E. Walton Zelly Jr
Is The "Underclass" Really A Class?, E. Walton Zelly Jr
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The concept of an "underclass" departs from previous determinations of social class based on criteria of education, occupation, and income in favor of the more subjective and less quantifiable criteria of the degree of social dislocation and the departure of a population from middle class norms and values. A study reviews current definitions of "the underclass"; contrasts this class description with "the poor" in the 60's and before; and suggests that "the underclass" is a pejorative label which has the effect of "blaming the victim", and has negative implications for the formulation of public policy directed toward the population thus …

Looking Into The Mirror: Chinese Childrenfs Responses To Chinese Childrenfs Books, Meei-Ling Liaw
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
As educators are learning to relate whole language theory and philosophy to literature-based instruction, children's books are finding their way into reading classrooms (Pace, 1991). Not only has literature-based instruction become a common theme in recent national conferences and journals in the field of reading but the use of literature has also been mandated in some places (English-Language Arts Framework for California Public Schools, 1987). Significantly more class room teachers are adopting children's books for literacy instruction than previously (Harris, 1993).
