Analytical Methods For Planning And Scheduling Daily Work In Inpatient Care Settings: Opportunities For Research And Practice, Laila Cure Ph.D.

Transactions of the International Conference on Health Information Technology Advancement

This article identifies current challenges in the planning and execution of daily work in inpatient care settings. Inadequate planning of the processes and resources associated with inpatient care services may negatively affect their effectiveness. It may also lead to burnout of healthcare workers when the resulting work plan is unknowingly infeasible or does not incorporate the necessary human factors considerations. This paper provides with an overview of current research on inpatient care workflow planning, as well as with directions for researchers and practitioners to advance this problem using a combination of human factors engineering and analytical methods.

Digital Illness Narratives: A New Form Of Health Communication, Jofen Han, Jo Wiley

Transactions of the International Conference on Health Information Technology Advancement

Social media has dramatically affected the way information is accessed and circulated. Social networking sites continue to create on-line communities where every participant plays an active role in seeking and sharing information. While social networks have profoundly impacted different industries in terms of communication between business-to-business and business-to-consumer interaction, they also have had significant impact on many stakeholders in the healthcare communication system. This report describes how a non-profit social networking site called CaringBridge can help patients communicate about their health challenges and gain support though their writings. When traditional “Illness Narratives” (a patient’s reflective writing about his/her illness) become …

Theoretical, Methodological And Practical Challenges In Designing Formative Evaluations Of Personal Ehealth Tools, Michael S. Dohan, Joseph Tan

Transactions of the International Conference on Health Information Technology Advancement

This article describes the challenges experienced in designing a formative evaluation of a mobile personal eHealth tool for disease symptom tracking, in the context of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases management. As this unique context is characterized by regular visits with physicians, and the need to report disease activity to the physician, a mixed methodology is used to assess the fit of the technology to the context, and a multilevel model is used to evaluate theoretical links between patient and physician. Other issues include selection of sampling techniques, recruitment, and preventing study attrition by participants.

Data Interoperability And Information Security In Healthcare, Reid Berryman, Nathan Yost, Nicholas Dunn, Christopher Edwards

Transactions of the International Conference on Health Information Technology Advancement

Interoperability represents the accurate exchange of information and the use of the information for effective decision making. For information exchange to be interoperable, it must be widely interpretable between multiple information systems. At a more granular level, it focuses on the accuracy, consistency and reliability of information exchanged between systems. The healthcare industry has defined many problems when it comes to the best practice of interoperability. Technical, financial, and managerial barriers are present that produce large scale complex problems for the whole industry. Although, a variety of potential solutions have been developed. Some have even been implemented already focusing on …

Managing Government Regulatory Requirements For Security And Privacy Using Existing Standard Models, Gregory Schymik, Dan Shoemaker Oct 2013

Managing Government Regulatory Requirements For Security And Privacy Using Existing Standard Models, Gregory Schymik, Dan Shoemaker

Transactions of the International Conference on Health Information Technology Advancement

This paper posits the use of a well-established standard approach to Federal compliance, which can be easily adapted to satisfy all legal and regulatory requirements for protection of patient personally identifiable information (PII) in health organizations. This approach is embodied in the three standards that dictate how to comply with the Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA). These standards also provide an excellent foundation for organizing a secure operation anywhere. The discussion revolves around the application of the FIPS 199 and FIPS 200/NIST 800-53(4) standard approach to the satisfaction of the present and upcoming legal and regulatory requirements for health …

The Role Of Mobile Technology In Enhancing The Use Of Personal Health, Mohamed Abouzahra, Joseph Tan Oct 2013

The Role Of Mobile Technology In Enhancing The Use Of Personal Health, Mohamed Abouzahra, Joseph Tan

Transactions of the International Conference on Health Information Technology Advancement

Healthcare industry is essential for the wellbeing of society members, however this industry is characterized by high cost and by plagued by serious medical errors. Personal health records (PHR) can play an important role in solving healthcare problems by enhancing patients’ involvement in their treatment, and improving patient-provider communication. Despite the potential importance of PHR systems, they suffer from low adoption rate because of several factors such as digital divide and lack of training. In this paper we propose that mobile PHR systems (MPHR) can aid in overcoming barriers to adopt PHR. We present a theoretical model based on theory …

Socializing Young Readers: A Content Analysis Of Body Size Images In Caldecott Medal Winners, Linda Wedwick, Nancy Latham Oct 2013

Socializing Young Readers: A Content Analysis Of Body Size Images In Caldecott Medal Winners, Linda Wedwick, Nancy Latham

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Many studies have examined gender issues in children’s literature, but a review of the literature reveals that few studies have examined the instances of fatness in the images. Studying the fat representation in the images of children’s literature is important because exposure to a variety of body types may slow the rate of children’s body dissatisfaction. The present study examines exposure to body size images in picture books. Results of this content analysis indicate that there are fewer books with fat characters when compared to those without. However, when examining every image of body size within each text, there is …

Standardization Needs For Effective Interoperability, Marilyn Skrocki Oct 2013

Standardization Needs For Effective Interoperability, Marilyn Skrocki

Transactions of the International Conference on Health Information Technology Advancement

The Electronic Health Record (EHR) has brought unique challenges in the effort to share information. How data is captured varies from institution to institution. In order for data to be well understood, data should have a definition that is consistent and comprehensively understood by all users of the data. Standardization of how data is captured is critical to allow the production and export of data needed to support quality assessment, decision support, exchange of data for patients with multiple health care providers and public health surveillance. Patient safety and quality improvement are dependent upon embedded clinical guidelines that promote standardized, …

Embracing A Productive Rhetorical Pragmatism: Teaching Writing As Democratic Deliberation, Jennifer Clifton Sep 2013

Embracing A Productive Rhetorical Pragmatism: Teaching Writing As Democratic Deliberation, Jennifer Clifton

Teaching/Writing: The Journal of Writing Teacher Education

Our current points of stasis in American politics make clear: we are facing a deep crisis of imagination in public life. Our (in)ability to imagine the interests and experiences of others limits not only how we understand domestic and global citizenship but also how we enact that citizenship with others. In talk and in practice, the inability to take seriously the interests and experiences of others leads Americans – in English Language Arts classrooms and in public life – to cast those who disagree as deeply flawed in character – unpatriotic, ungodly, lazy, irresponsible, or criminal.

In this article, I …

Assessing The Effectiveness Of Online Information Literacy Tutorials For Millennial Undergraduates, Dianna E. Sachs, Kathleen Langan, Carrie C. Leatherman, Jennifer L. Walters Sep 2013

Assessing The Effectiveness Of Online Information Literacy Tutorials For Millennial Undergraduates, Dianna E. Sachs, Kathleen Langan, Carrie C. Leatherman, Jennifer L. Walters

University Libraries Faculty & Staff Publications

This article reports on the findings of a study that evaluated the effectiveness of redesigning online information literacy tutorials in order to meet the learning needs and preferences of Millennial students. Using both quantitative and qualitative measures, this study compared two different online tutorials – a static, HTML-based tutorial and a dynamic, interactive, audio/video tutorial. This study found that, contrary to generalizations made in the library and education literature, Millennial students learned equally well from both tutorials. However, students expressed a much higher level of satisfaction from the tutorial designed to be “Millennial friendly.”

Trading The Picket Fence: Perceptions Of Childbirth, Marriage, And Career, Wanda Parham-Payne, Bette J. Dickerson, Tekisha Dwan Everette Sep 2013

Trading The Picket Fence: Perceptions Of Childbirth, Marriage, And Career, Wanda Parham-Payne, Bette J. Dickerson, Tekisha Dwan Everette

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

While there was a slightly lower rate of out-of-wedlock births in 2009, 41 percent of all births were to unmarried women. Although there has been an increase across the board among older age groups, Black women continue to have children out of wedlock at a disproportionately higher rate than White and Asian women. This is of particular interest, considering African-American women are increasingly attaining higher levels of education in comparison to previous generations of African-American women. As such, the perceptions of childbirth, child-rearing, and marriage among a sample of African-American women matriculating within a postsecondary setting are explored.

Beyond Professional Emergencies: Patterns Of Mistakes In Social Work And Their Implications For Remediation, Keith Roberts Johnson Sep 2013

Beyond Professional Emergencies: Patterns Of Mistakes In Social Work And Their Implications For Remediation, Keith Roberts Johnson

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This paper analyzes the emerging field of government mandated child protection, the work's design, and the public crisis caused by public airing of its mistakes. The cycle of reacting to public revulsion at errors, followed by a return to "business as usual" persists despite official, government inquiries and the social work profession identified with the protection of children. The risk of working in a highly emotional area is discussed through the sociology of "mistakes at work," or professional emergencies. This work balances risks with advantages of evoking emotions. The risk comes from the negative emotions associated with official failures seen by …
