Evaluation Of A Coaching Experiential Learning Project On Ot Student Abilities And Perceptions, Erin A. Phillips

The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy

Innovative teaching methods to address emerging practice needs are critical components of effective occupational therapy education. Experiential learning strategies can enhance skill development and translation of knowledge into OT clinical practice. In addition, skills such as coaching may provide important links to health promotion practices. Thirty-two occupational therapy students took part in an experiential project to connect occupational engagement and health for a community of older adults. A pretest/posttest design was used to evaluate program outcomes in student perceived abilities, and narrative reflection papers provided postexperience qualitative information. The students improved in all 10 areas of abilities self-assessment with …

The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy

Background: The Wilmington Robotic Exoskeleton (WREX) is a body-powered, four degrees of freedom orthosis that allows gravity-minimized movement of the arm at the shoulder and elbow. We sought to measure patient satisfaction and performance with use of the WREX during activities of daily living, play, and at school.

Method: Twenty-five families completed a phone interview based on the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM). These families all had a child, aged 2 to 21years, who had a neuromuscular disorder and who had used the WREX for at least eight months. The parents rated their child’s performance of and satisfaction …

Exploring Writing Circles As Innovative, Collaborative Writing Structures With Teacher Candidates, Sherron Killingsworth Roberts, Norine Blanch, Nandita Gurjar Jan 2017

Exploring Writing Circles As Innovative, Collaborative Writing Structures With Teacher Candidates, Sherron Killingsworth Roberts, Norine Blanch, Nandita Gurjar

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Writing circles are “small groups . . . meeting regularly to share drafts, choose common writing topics, practice positive response, and in general, help each other become better writers” (Vopat, 2009, p. 6). In this exploratory study, writing circles were employed with elementary teacher candidates in hopes of enhancing their perceptions about writing and authorship. This mixed methods pilot used a convenience sample of 28 teacher candidates in a language arts methods course. Based on interest and using writing workshop elements, weekly writing circles were formed and generated one collaborative manuscript. Afterward, 68% of candidates reported improvement in writing skills. …

“This I Believe” About The Teaching Of Writing: Secondary Teachers’ Digital Essays About Their Pedagogical Understandings, Denise N. Morgan, Natasha H. Chenowith

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This case study (Merriam & Tisdell, 2016) examines the final projects of two secondary teachers in a graduate course about writing pedagogy. Teachers created digital essays along the lines of the National Public Radio’s “This I Believe” essays, which articulated their beliefs about the teaching of writing. We posed two research questions: a) What pedagogical understandings do teachers identify as their beliefs about writing and how do they represent those ideas in a digital composition? b) What did teachers learn from participating in the process of composing a digital essay? We found that teachers “reimagined” the teaching of writing, were …

How The Immigration And Deportation Systems Work: A Social Workers Guide, Carol Cleaveland Jan 2017

How The Immigration And Deportation Systems Work: A Social Workers Guide, Carol Cleaveland

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Not only is the question of immigration controversial, it is complex -- laden with legal nuances as well as implications for human and civil rights. This article provides an overview of what happens to an immigrant who seeks to enter the country ‘legally,’ as well as the challenges for an immigrant who enters the country without authorization. Social workers who serve immigrants may find themselves called on to advocate for clients as they traverse a labyrinth court system. I introduce this system to help practitioners and students understand the paths to legal immigration in the United States, as well as …

First 100 Cases Of Bls First Responder A Dministered Naloxone In A Statewide Ems System, Joshua Mastenbrook, James Markman, Tyler Koedam, William Fales

Research Day

Abstract Title: FIRST 100 CASES OF BLS FIRST RESPONDER ADMINISTERED NALOXONE IN A STATEWIDE EMS SYSTEM Abstract ID: 240 Abstract Category: Clinical Research BACKGROUND: In October 2015, a midwestern state law mandated that all BLS first responder (FR) agencies be trained and equipped to administer naloxone to suspected opioid-overdose patients. Although well intentioned, several questions have arisen: does naloxone use displace emphasis on early positive pressure ventilation (PPV), is naloxone being appropriately administered, and does the mandate affect patient outcome. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the first 100 cases of FR administered naloxone (FR-naloxone) for administration appropriateness …

Childhood Idiopathic Pulmonary Hypertension: A Case Report, Nathaniel Balmert, Joseph Prahlow Jan 2017

Childhood Idiopathic Pulmonary Hypertension: A Case Report, Nathaniel Balmert, Joseph Prahlow

Research Day

Introduction: Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is characterized as average pulmonary artery pressure of greater than 25mm Hg at rest. Childhood idiopathic pulmonary hypertensions (CIPH) is distinguishable from PAH by the absence of family history or underlying disease. Symptoms of CIPH include dyspnea, exercise limitation, and syncope. Common organ-specific changes include right ventricular hypertrophy and right ventricular strain. We present the case of a 6-year-old girl presenting with idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension aggravated by esophageal intubation. Methods: This case is from the files of one of the authors, a forensic pathologist. Case Report and Discussion: Diagnosed with pulmonary arterial hypertension when …

Infection-Associated Mycobacterium Fortuitum Infection, Dennis T. Huang, Larry Lutwick Jan 2017

Infection-Associated Mycobacterium Fortuitum Infection, Dennis T. Huang, Larry Lutwick

Research Day

Introduction: Mycobacterial species are unusual causes of skin and soft tissue infections and can be difficult to diagnose in the absence of consideration as they often require specific culture media and longer incubation times. We report a Mycobacterium fortuitum subcutaneous abscess in a diabetic related to medication injection that was initially diagnosed without specialized media or prolonged incubation times. Case Report: A 48 year old diabetic female developed a progressive subcutaneous swelling in the tissues of the right lower abdominal wall where she had been injecting liraglutide. Because of continued enlargement "to almost egg size" with pain, she was empirically …

Power, Deviance, Stigma, And Control: A Sociological Reconceptualization Of Sexuality Within Social Work Services, Richard A. Brandon-Friedman

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Despite shared societal and historical origins, sociology and social work have had a contentious relationship, leading some to suggest the two disciplines are inherently incompatible. This article challenges that assertion by examining how sociological conceptions of deviance, power, stigma, and control can contribute to more just social work services, particularly in the contentious area of adolescent sexuality. As respected social agents, social workers can play a role in counteracting the forces that alienate outsiders. By understanding how sociological theories contribute to their ability to contest the social discourse regarding sexuality, social workers can challenge social norms and work with clients …

Community Partnerships For The Prevention Of The Worst Forms Of Child Labor Among Migrant Children In Samut Sakhon, Thailand, Tsz Ki K. Tang, David Engstrom, Sompong Srakaew

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This policy note examined the child labor prevention model employed in Samut Sakhon, Thailand, which aims to prevent migrant children from entering the worst forms of child labor in the seafood processing industry. The model consists of transitional education and corporate social responsibility (CSR). The analysis examines the context of child labor and explores the challenges and opportunities to make anti-child labor efforts more effective.
