Humanism And Social Work Paradoxes, Problems, And Promises, Norman Goroff Mar 1981

Humanism And Social Work Paradoxes, Problems, And Promises, Norman Goroff

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Although social work is viewed as a human service profession, with the implicit assumption that it is humanistically oriented, an examination of some of the theoretical orientations, practice settings and practice methodology will reveal a number of paradoxes, problems, and potential promises. I do not claim to provide more than a sampling, to provide a more exhaustive analysis would require considerably more time than is available.

Obstacles To Reading Acquisition: Preventative And Corrective Concerns, Carl Braun Jan 1981

Obstacles To Reading Acquisition: Preventative And Corrective Concerns, Carl Braun

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

In spite of the vast expenditure and research on the process of learning to read, there is little if any evidence that the incidence of reading disability is declining. Some, in fact, would argue that the contrary is true.

Meeting Children's Reading Needs: Examining The Roles Of Special Teachers, William H. Rupley, Marty Abramson Jan 1981

Meeting Children's Reading Needs: Examining The Roles Of Special Teachers, William H. Rupley, Marty Abramson

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Those who teach remedial reading in the schools have numerous titles, dissimilar training, and overlapping responsibilities. Children who have mild to severe reading problems may be instructed by reading specialists, Title I teachers, teachers of the learning disabled, and so forth. Similarly, the reading teachers' training may range from participation in an undergraduate or graduate reading program to never having taken a formal course in reading. Though there may be an inherent assumption that all these individuals are equally capable of teaching reading, there are marked differences in training that could make this assumption untrue.

Culture Conflict As It Relates To A Psychocultural Therapeutic Model For Chicanos, Armando Tena Dec 1980

Culture Conflict As It Relates To A Psychocultural Therapeutic Model For Chicanos, Armando Tena

Masters Theses

Since the Chicano culture is the synthesis of the Mexican and Anglo/Saxon cultures that meet in the American society, social and behavioral scientists have developed the idea of how the concept of culture conflict can be utilized in the psychological assessment and treatment of Chicano clients.

The authors reviewed in this work have expounded on the concept of Culture Conflict to develop a psychocultural mode for the Chicano population. This clinical strategy is based on the premise that the Chicano individual, because of his life experiences in this society, will find himself in situations where his cultural identity is not …

Vocabulary Acquisition During Elementary And Post-Elementary Years: A Preliminary Report, Martha Rapp Haggard Oct 1980

Vocabulary Acquisition During Elementary And Post-Elementary Years: A Preliminary Report, Martha Rapp Haggard

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Variables which contribute to language learning have been the subject of a great deal of research interest and study. Generally, research has concentrated on preschool language acquisition and, until the past decade, has supported the conclusion that language development is very nearly mature by about age six. Growing numbers of researchers, however, are acknowledging the need for research concerning language acquisition beyond the preschool years (C. Chomsky, 1969; Ruddell, 1976; Wardhaugh, 1976). Of specific interest are the developmental processes through which elementary and post-elementary children gain grammatical and lexical control of their language. Embedded in this larger concern are questions …

Professional Concerns, R Baird Shuman, R.W. Reising

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

R. W. Reising, Professor of Communicative Arts and Native American Studies at Pembroke State University in North Carolina, provides a point counterpoint on the question of whether students' dialects interfere with their ability to read. He suggests three specific actions to which educators concerned with reading instruction might turn their efforts in order to enhance the quality of such instruction for students who normally use a dialect other than standard.

What Is Being Done For Black Children In Reading?, Sandra F. Guillory, Charles S. Gifford

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

That there are concerns for reading problems in general is evident by the profusion of studies that have been, are being, and will be reported. However, the history of research reports regarding the reading ability of speakers of Black English is rather brief. Only in recent years have there been published reports on the high frequency of failures of Black children in reading (Smith, 1975), the urgent situation of language differences of Blacks (Knapp, 1975), and the disparity between the reading achievement levels of Black children and White children (Rupley and Robeck, 1978). This report is intended to review the …

Establishing Verbal Behavior: The Effects Of Using Establishing Operations And Imitative Prompts To Teach Mands To Two Non-Verbal Elderly Retarded Persons, Terry Steven Bradford Aug 1980

Establishing Verbal Behavior: The Effects Of Using Establishing Operations And Imitative Prompts To Teach Mands To Two Non-Verbal Elderly Retarded Persons, Terry Steven Bradford

Masters Theses

The present study tested a procedure to establish vocal mands in a 47- year-old non-verbal male with Down's syndrome and manually signed mands in a 64-year-old severely retarded female who was physically incapable of speech. In a multiple baseline design across subjects and settings, subjects were taught to complete four behavioral sequences. An establishing operation was then introduced: an item required to complete each sequence was systematically removed once as a probe for manding. Following this, relevant establishing operations were paired with imitative prompts to train manding missing items. Following mastery of a ll mands during booster training, subjects were …
