A Comparison Of Reading And Listening Performances Of Braille And Print Readers, Betty P. Zook Dec 1981

A Comparison Of Reading And Listening Performances Of Braille And Print Readers, Betty P. Zook

Masters Theses

Blind and sighted subjects were tested on their capability to retain information after both reading and listening to specially prepared printed and taped materials. The sample consisted of graduate students and professional individuals. It was found that, on the average, subjects retained more after reading than listening. This effect was more pronounced in the braille reading subjects. As the level of complexity of the material increased, the difference in the points earned between the two modalities, reading and listening, increased significantly. A behavioral analysis suggested some reasons for this difference. It was suggested that further research into reading and listening …

Children's Perceptions Of Oral And Silent Reading, Duane R. Tovey Oct 1981

Children's Perceptions Of Oral And Silent Reading, Duane R. Tovey

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The traditional common-sense way to teach reading has been viewed as a process of helping individual children "sound-out" unrecognized words as they read orally with their peers and teacher following along in a text. If a word is miscalled or not at tempted, both the teacher and children are eager to offer the pronunciation. Besides the embarrassment which accompanies such a practice (Holt, 1969), this simplistic mechanistic approach tends to condition children to view reading as a word-centered oral activity. Perceiving reading as a visual meaning-centered process is the last thing many children think of (Doake, 1976; Tovey, 1976).

An Analysis Of Validity Constructs In The Dichotic Listening And Hemispheric Competition Procedures, Wade Addam Kapik Aug 1981

An Analysis Of Validity Constructs In The Dichotic Listening And Hemispheric Competition Procedures, Wade Addam Kapik

Masters Theses

This investigation was designed to determine the validity of two categories of neuropsychological measures of cerebral dominance. Forty right-handed subjects were administered two dichotic listening tests and two hemispheric competition tests in a random order. The principal data showed that none of the four tests had sufficient levels of criterion-related and concurrent validity to be considered clinically useful in measuring laterality. In addition, a Baysean analysis of one of the dichotic listening tests indicated that it possessed a predictive validity of .79. Finally, the assertion that the scoring methods of each test are dynamically different was disputed, and Kinsbourne's interhemispheric …

A Nonvocal Method For Teaching Reading And Spelling To The Deaf, Amy A. Barmeier Aug 1981

A Nonvocal Method For Teaching Reading And Spelling To The Deaf, Amy A. Barmeier

Dissertations

Teaching reading and spelling to the deaf requires materials and methods which compensate for the two problems of the deaf child. The first is that the deaf typically have a small verbal history in either the sign language or lipreading modes. The second is that the deaf cannot identify unknown written words by phonetically sounding them out. In comparison, the hearing child has sophisticated sounding out skills and an extensive auditory-vocal history.

The seven experiments in this research investigated a method for teaching vocabulary comprehension and spelling to the deaf which assumed neither a verbal history with respect to the …

Intimacy In Context: A Theory Of Interpersonal Relationships, Sara Mirjam Terian Aug 1981

Intimacy In Context: A Theory Of Interpersonal Relationships, Sara Mirjam Terian

Masters Theses

To define intimacy, interpersonal relationships are divided into four major categories that encompass the whole range of interpersonal behavior: strangers, acquaintances, friends, and intimates. These are seen as progressive stages, defined by the individual's subjective, affective orientation, and discernable by behavioral indicators. Strangers are divided into total, encountered, and familiar strangers, acquaintances into mere and friendly acquaintances, and friends into Just friends, casual friends, and close friends. The process culminates in intimacy which is divided into three aspects: psychological, the necessary aspect, biological, and ideological. Total intimacy is the presence of all three. This framework has explanatory and predictive value, …

Direct Instruction Versus Incidental Learning Of Reading Vocabulary, Patrick Groff Jul 1981

Direct Instruction Versus Incidental Learning Of Reading Vocabulary, Patrick Groff

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Advice to teachers that the direct teaching of reading vocabulary to children is an inferior procedure for gaining this linguistic goal is still circulating. It is easy to find recent statements from reading authorities that are intended to substantiate the belief that extensive reading will develop children's vocabulary better than direct instruction. For example, Smith ( 1978 ) maintains "The best way to acquire a large and useful vocabulary for reading is by meaningful reading" (p. 168). Johnson and Pearson (1978) would not apply this rule at the very beginning stage of reading instruction, but would put it into force …

Mainstreaming And The Classroom Teacher: A Practical Approach, Carolyn N. Hedley Apr 1981

Mainstreaming And The Classroom Teacher: A Practical Approach, Carolyn N. Hedley

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Classroom teachers have always had exceptional students in regular classrooms; many of these children could not be placed due to overcrowding of special education classes. Some were undiagnosed and unrecognized in terms of specific disability. The parents of others would not allow separation from regular learning settings. Often these handicapped learners in normative educational settings were relegated to marginal roles and ignored. Special learners were sometimes the focus of annoyance of teachers and classmates, who did not understand their disability and could not effectively aid special learning. Much of the time, handicapped children were successfully taught by the ingenious teacher, …

Help Them To Speak, Write, And Listen--They'll Be Better Readers, Linda Jean Lehnert Apr 1981

Help Them To Speak, Write, And Listen--They'll Be Better Readers, Linda Jean Lehnert

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

While observing beginning readers in both American and British schools, I have noted that the better readers also appear to be the better speakers, while the child having difficulty with reading also tends to be less verbal and less explicit in oral language activities. This observation sparked my interest in the role of oral language in the reading process.
