Three Spelling Measures As Correlates Of Reading Ability In Underprepared College Freshmen, Sandra K. Pitts
Three Spelling Measures As Correlates Of Reading Ability In Underprepared College Freshmen, Sandra K. Pitts
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
If a significant relationship were found between spelling abilities using varied measures and reading levels using an easily administered reading test, a remedial program for spelling should have a positive effect upon reading skills as well by tapping common cognitive processes and by cultivating those language competencies which are common to both reading and spelling. Such information would be of particular value to support facilities in colleges which serve large minority populations.

Linguistic Development Of Children And The Syntax Of Basals, David L. Brown, L. D. Briggs
Linguistic Development Of Children And The Syntax Of Basals, David L. Brown, L. D. Briggs
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Children's ability to reflect upon language begins to appear about age two (Clark, 1978). During the early stages of language development, children correct their own pronunciations, question the appropriateness of speech styles, play with different linguistic units, and make judgments concerning language usage for varying situations (Clark, 1978). Children exhibit an increasing awareness of language with age and soon become aware of both the form and function of language. Their metacognitive skills become apparent as they progress from the simple to the more complex linguistic structures. Children's language acquisition and cognitive development continue to develop during the early years of …

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Numerous longitudinal studies attest to the concern regarding the long-term effectiveness of remedial programs (Balow, 1965; Balow & Blomquist, 1965; Buerger, 1968; Muehl &' Forell, 1973; Robinson & Smith, 1962; Shearer, 1966). While short-term improvement has been demonstrated repeatedly, the majority of the reported studies fail to demonstrate maintenance of achievement gains (Spache, 1980). The fact that follow-up studies persist (Bessai & Cozac, 1980; Gottesman, 1979; Ito, 1981; Miles, Foreman & Irwine, 1978) demonstrates an intuitive belief that remedial treatment should have lasting beneficial effects.

Teaching Guides From The First Learning Environment, Marietta Peskin
Teaching Guides From The First Learning Environment, Marietta Peskin
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Given intact psycho-neurologic and perceptual systems, all children from birth to school entrance are successful language users. For many, however, failure begins during their initial exposure to reading instruction in kindergarten. This paper will examine how the application of certain learning principles in the young child's home foster successful learning while ignoring those same principles in the schools allows or fosters failure.
The major purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how these guides from the first learning environment, the home, can be better implemented in the schools so that reading problems can be prevented or ameliorated in a more …

An Integrative Reading-Language Approach, Dixie D. Sanger, Sheldon L. Stick, Una A. Lange
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
This study sought to determine whether third-grade children identified as poor readers (6-12 mos. delay) were able to improve their reading performances after being provided instruction using an integrated reading-language approach. It was speculated that the basis for some or most reading difficulties were language problems resulting from deficiencies in constructing meaning from a spoken or printed message, difficulty understanding and/or remembering the message proposition(s), and incongruities between a child's knowledge of language and linguistic information presented.

Twelve "Musts" For Improved Reading Comprehension, Linda M. Clary
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Recent years have brought an unprecedented interest in reading comprehension, particularly in the area of research. The Center for the Study of Reading was established in 1976 at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, with its basic goal to conduct research into the underlying processes of reading comprehension. One unusual characteristic of this endeavor was the assembly of a multidisciplinary staff of researchers from the areas of psychology and linguistics, as well as reading. Over the past years, the CSR has been prolific in its research and dissemination with hundreds of pieces of ongoing research and summaries of studies having been …

Eager, bright eyed children gather close around the teacher's chair, where she holds several enticing books. In this multiethnic class she makes very sure that Juanita, Pablo, and Kim, who know little English, are seated close to her where they can point to pictures and hear her words clearly. The teacher begins with The Very Hungry Caterpillar, the children giggling as he eats his way through "One red apple", "Two yellow pears", etc. While the story is reread the children join in chorus as different pupils point to the pictures. The teacher continues with Teddy Bears One to Ten, Ape …
