Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
During its more than 40 year existence, the National Reading Conference has become one of our premiere avenues for stimulating and reporting on advances in reading research, reading instruction, and reading policy. The 1992 annual meeting, with 142 sessions, is the most recent contribution to NRC's fine reputation. The following highlights are presented with apologies to the many fine researchers, scholars and teachers whose work cannot be mentioned.

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Comparative reading research offers us an avenue to study a universal process — learning to read — in cultures and societies with different customs, traditions and writing systems. Such studies provide insights into how we learn, and fail to learn, and information about methods for meeting the reading needs of different students in our own country. In studying learning to read in another writing system there is always the temptation to make comparisons in terms of which is better or worse, easier or harder. In the past, research from Japan indicated that learning to read in Japanese produced fewer reading …
Contextual Constructivism: The Impact Of Culture On The Learning And Teaching Of Science, William W. Cobern
Contextual Constructivism: The Impact Of Culture On The Learning And Teaching Of Science, William W. Cobern
Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project
Though rooted in Piagetian research, constructivism1 is an avenue of research pertaining to teaching and learning that departed from the neo-Piagetian2 mainstream twenty years ago and has continued on a distinct path of development. The departure was evident by the late seventies, clearly marked by two publications, Novak (1977) and Driver & Easley (1978). For constructivists, learning is not knowledge written on, or transplanted to, a person's mind as if the mind were a blank slate waiting to be written on or an empty gallery waiting to be filled. Constructivists use the metaphor of construction because it aptly summarizes the …

An Analysis Of Student Math Scores Based Upon Teacher Training In The Instructional Theory Into Practice Model, Martha O'Kray
An Analysis Of Student Math Scores Based Upon Teacher Training In The Instructional Theory Into Practice Model, Martha O'Kray
Dissertations
The main purpose of this study was to determine if teacher participation in Instructional Theory Into Practice (ITIP , Hunter, 1978) training resulted in any difference in student achievement. Student outcomes were measured by scores received on the district's Exit Level Mathematics Test (Roseville Community Schools, 1986).
The study took place in Roseville Community Schools. Six hundred forty-nine students and 32 teachers in Grades 3, 4, and 5 participated.
Fourteen teacher observations were included to confirm the appropriateness and frequency of ITIP strategies in classroom instruction. Observers using the Instructional S kills Observation Instrument (ISOI, Wolfe, 1984) scored non-ITIP-trained teachers …

The Effect Of Vestibular Stimulation On Expressive Language Of Pre-Schoolers With Down Syndrome, Tiffany Bergo
Masters Theses
Effects of vestibular stimulation, when presented prior to language therapy, on expressive language abilities in pre-school children with Down syndrome were examined. Two subjects participated; one subject completed the study. Vestibular stimulation was therapist- and child-initiated and provided by various types of equipment. The subject's expressive language use (verbal and non-verbal) was videotaped during fifteen minutes of language therapy across a six-week, eleven-session period.
Results of this study indicate that expressive language use increased or improved across many parameters during the vestibular stimulation phase of the study. The subject displayed greatest gains in the use of multiple word utterances and …
How Can We Use What We Know About Questioning Skills To Develop Literate Thinkers?, Bonnie B. Thomas
How Can We Use What We Know About Questioning Skills To Develop Literate Thinkers?, Bonnie B. Thomas
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
As the critical thinking movement has developed and corresponding research has been reported, a wide body of knowledge has developed around the skill of questioning as a means of developing critical thinking. Effective teachers from Socrates to the present day have sought to do more than transmit facts to students. Teachers have tried to help students develop skills in problem-solving, analyzing, evaluating and interpreting information. A typical teacher does this by asking hundreds of questions on a given day. The prevalence of this type of teaching has been found in reviews of research on teachers' questions which include studies going …

Factors Influencing Persistence Of Adult Students In High School Completion Programs, Joan E. Garbarino
Dissertations
This research was conducted to contrast adult persisters' and dropouts' perceptions of the importance of institutional, situational, and dispositional barriers to high school completion.
Institutional factors included staff support, curriculum , student services, and logistical considerations. Situational factors were family and friend support, time, employment, and health. Dispositional factors included attitudes toward education, academic preparedness plus expectations, and satisfaction.
Completers who graduated and noncompleters who dropped out before graduation were surveyed. Statistical analysis allowed the researcher to test differences between the perceptions of persisters and dropouts in regard to eleven factors found in the three major barriers. It also revealed …

Including All Students Within A Community Of Learners, Curt Dudley-Marling, Susan Stires
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
One of the inevitable consequences of schooling is this: a substantial number of children will experience some failure during their educational careers. In general, students fail when they are unable to learn the skills their teachers think they should learn, at the time the teachers think they should. We believe that efforts to reduce school failure must turn away from trying to fix students. Instead teachers should concentrate on transforming their classrooms to make them places which are more congenial to the linguistic, cultural, social, and intellectual backgrounds students bring to school. In short, teachers need to create a community …
