How Parents Perceptions Of Literacy Acquisition Relate To Their Children's Emerging Literacy Knowledge, Jim Anderson Feb 1995

How Parents Perceptions Of Literacy Acquisition Relate To Their Children's Emerging Literacy Knowledge, Jim Anderson

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

There is increasing recognition that literacy learning is a sociocultural phenomenon and that the ways in which the learning is mediated, the meanings which are ascribed to literacy, and the literacy activities in which members of a cultural group engage are determined by the beliefs and values held by the participants (Clay, 1993). For example, in her work with three different cultural groups in the southeastern United States, Heath (1983) documented qualitative differences between the early literacy experiences of working class children and their middle class counterparts. Tracking the children's literacy development in school, she found that the middle class …

Oral Participation In Shared Reading And Writing By Limited English Proficient Students In A Multiethnic Class Setting, Kathryn Laframboise, Margie Wynn Dec 1994

Oral Participation In Shared Reading And Writing By Limited English Proficient Students In A Multiethnic Class Setting, Kathryn Laframboise, Margie Wynn

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Meeting the educational needs of students with limited English proficiency is a challenge that is changing and will continue to change the direction of educational programs. There has been a huge influx of limited English proficient (LEP) students across all geographic regions of the United States (United States Department of Education, 1992). Of the 25 largest school districts in the country, 23 have a majority of minority students (Multicultural Education Review Task Force, 1991). The impact of this increase in LEP students has resulted in individual states and school districts examining their resources, priorities, and curricula to meet their needs.

Priority Of Reading Instruction Revisited: Evidence From A Regression Analysis Of Adult Esl Learners' Reading Ability, Zhihui Fang Dec 1994

Priority Of Reading Instruction Revisited: Evidence From A Regression Analysis Of Adult Esl Learners' Reading Ability, Zhihui Fang

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Historically, there has been an intense debate over the most effective approach to instruction: bottom-up versus top down (Adams, 1990; Chall, 1967; Grabe, 1991; McCarthy, 1991; Swaffar, 1988). With the increasing emphasis on the role of context in literacy activities (Anderson and Pearson, 1984; Lave, 1988; Steffensen, Joag-dev, and Anderson, 1979), reading research in English as a second language (ESL) has in the recent past focused on the effects of prior knowledge, or schemata, on comprehension (Carrell, 1984, 1987; Dubin and Bycina, 1991; Lee, 1986). Most of these studies generally reported significant effects of background knowledge on reading performance. Concomitantly, …

The Writing Response In Studies Of Topography-Based And Selection-Based Verbal Behavior, Osborn Cresson Dec 1994

The Writing Response In Studies Of Topography-Based And Selection-Based Verbal Behavior, Osborn Cresson

Dissertations

The position taken in this paper is that the observable world is the only one needed in our analysis, that behavior is a reaction to the environments in which it occurs, and that language is more behavior that can be studied effectively as a dependent variable that varies as a function of independent variables manipulated by the experimenter.

Our goal was to study topography-based and selection-based verbal behavior with emphasis on the writing response and then to produce a report that would serve as a guide for other students of behavior and environment.

Sixteen undergraduate college students participated in 115 …

Literacy Education In Kindergarten Classrooms, Arne E. Sippola Oct 1994

Literacy Education In Kindergarten Classrooms, Arne E. Sippola

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

A survey of literature regarding contemporary thought in early literacy acquisition reveals a strong focus upon emergent literacy. Emergent literacy theory asserts that literacy concepts are being developed at virtually all ages. Knowledge of communication functions and forms are being learned as an individual listens and speaks, and makes transactions with print. Life experiences, as well, affect the ways in which we will interpret communicative episodes. All of these are developing as an individual experiences life. No longer do early literacy theorists associate the onset of literacy learning with an age or stage (Raines and Canady, 1990). Literacy acquisition is …

... And We Keep On Building Prisons: Racism, Poverty, And Challenges To The Welfare State, Paula L. Dressel

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Prison-building is argued to be an intervention of last resort when a nation loses faith in the social welfare enterprise. Recent proposals for more punitive regulations for means-tested benefits, along with the recent dramatic growth in the construction of prisons and in the size of the inmate population, indicate that we are moving as a society toward heightened levels of scapegoating and victim-blaming as a response to troubles generated by significant structural shifts in the economy. This paper analyzes the connections between poverty, punishment, and prisons, with particular emphasis on the scapegoating of people of color. The role of racism …

Urban Teachers’ Views And Ranking Of Five Home And School Variables With Respect To Effective Teaching Of Disadvantaged Students, Loraine Constance Enniss Aug 1994

Urban Teachers’ Views And Ranking Of Five Home And School Variables With Respect To Effective Teaching Of Disadvantaged Students, Loraine Constance Enniss

Dissertations

There is a range of information on effective teaching of disadvantaged students, with educators supporting either the home or school, as the variable with the greatest impact. What are the opinions of classroom teachers on this topic?

In this exploratory study, Group 1 teachers included all those who ranked the impact (on their ability to effectively teach disadvantaged students), of the home variables: parental involvement, dialects of English, socioeconomic status as 3, 4. and 5 and the school variables: teaching methodology and teacher expectations, as 1 and 2. All others were in Group 0. Scores of these two groups of …

The Ethnic Aspects Of Population Change In Latvia After Independence, Ilmars Mezs Aug 1994

The Ethnic Aspects Of Population Change In Latvia After Independence, Ilmars Mezs

Masters Theses

This study examines current and historic ethnic and demographic trends and their spatial and cultural contexts within Latvia. Comparisons with the other two Baltic states are also presented and discussed. The Latvian population underwent fifty years of Soviet rule, with deliberate policies to dilute the homogeneity of Latvians through Russification, in-migration, and political dominance. The period from 1940 to 1991 greatly impacted Latvians and immigrants, who were mainly Russians, by placing stresses on the spatial structure of the ethnic groups and their cultural relationship.

Latvians in particular feared ethnic and cultural extinction. The process of ethnic dilution and mixing under …

Eclecticism, a common alternative to the model of unique instruction, "holds that multiple perspectives and approaches will be necessary to accommodate the needs of children who possess differences in abilities and learning histories" (Kameenui, 1993, p. 376-383). Here teachers select the best teaching and learning activities from various approaches to literacy as a means of meeting the diverse needs of learners.

A Comparison Of The Differences Of The Chinese Language And The English Language Using Voice Analysis, Chia-Lin Hsieh

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to see if differences exist in Taiwanese students when speaking in their native Chinese language as compared to a secondary language (English) using voice analysis. Not only was the study intended to compare pitches and octaves of 2 languages, but it also hoped to identify the possible factors that influenced the voices of 2 languages.

Fifty Chinese students were randomly selected from a population of 84 Chinese students who were from Taiwan, had established residence in the USA for at least 6 months, and were enrolled in WMU with TOEFL score of at least …

Crossing Boundaries: What Do Second-Language- Learning Theories Say To Reading And Writing Teachers Of English-As-A-Second-Language Learners?, Jill Fitzgerald Apr 1994

Crossing Boundaries: What Do Second-Language- Learning Theories Say To Reading And Writing Teachers Of English-As-A-Second-Language Learners?, Jill Fitzgerald

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Increasing presence of English-as-a-second-language (ESL) learners in United States schools creates more and more need for all teachers, including mainstream teachers, reading teachers, and other specialists, to have a firm understanding of some basic principles and beliefs about how individuals learn a second language. Teachers who have been trained in foreign-language education, bilingual education, ESL education, and related fields — such as linguistics — usually have learned about predominant second-language-learning theories and their correlated instructional implications.
