The Public Administrationist As Civic Shaman: The Self-Reflective Integrator Of Policy Frames Of Reference And Social Character, Phillip A. Brown
Dissertations
This study discusses the discipline of Public Administration and the Public Administrationist in relation to policy frames of reference and social character. The relationship of policy frames of reference and social character is the basis for public trust As the American political system becomes more and more fragmented, public administrationists, sometimes by default, become the trustees for safeguarding the public trust.
The concept of policy frames of reference, as it evolves in this discussion, refers to the ability of the public administrationist to understand the interactions of changing issues impacting on the interactions of changing issues, or quantum thinking. Social …

What Do Response Journals Reveal About Children's Understandings Of The Workings Of Literary Texts?, Sylvia Pantaleo
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Children's literature has become a central component of many elementary reading programs. The multiple benefits of using children's literature in classrooms have been well documented (Cullinan, 1989a, 1989b; Fuhler, 1990; Galda and Cullinan, 1991; Huck, 1987). Reading programs using literature as their core content vary in organization and structure (Hiebert and Colt, 1989; Tunnel and Jacobs, 1989; Zarrillo, 1989; Zarrillo and Cox, 1992). Publications, workshops and university courses abound as educators continue to explore the use of literature and literary response in elementary and middle school classrooms.

Sharing Multicultural Literature Through Storytelling, Florence M. Newell
Sharing Multicultural Literature Through Storytelling, Florence M. Newell
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Literature can be used as a means to support children's development in the areas of cognition, language, social mores, creativity, personality, and aesthetics (Glazer, 1986). As the children in public schools today become more culturally and linguistically different, the diversity of literature should be expanded to reflect these differences among learners. Each child brings unique literacy strengths and serves as a resource to help teachers and other students understand one another (Templeton, 1991). Sharing literature from different cultures or literature that includes characters with different cultural or ethnic backgrounds offers a variety of benefits for teachers and students. Using multicultural …
Listening To Parents' Voices: Cross Cultural Perceptions Of Learning To Read And To Write, Jim Anderson
Listening To Parents' Voices: Cross Cultural Perceptions Of Learning To Read And To Write, Jim Anderson
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Traditionally, educators have been generous in dispensing advice to parents about how they can help their children learn to read and write when they enter school (e.g.,Mergentime, 1963; Vukelich, 1984). However, researchers in emergent literacy (Clay, 1966) have found that many young children enter school already possessing considerable literacy knowledge. Consequently, there is a burgeoning interest in working with parents to understand the important roles they play in their school aged children's literacy development.
Religious Fundamentalism In Indian Politics, Linda Elder
Religious Fundamentalism In Indian Politics, Linda Elder
Masters Theses
The Hindu nationalist movement, known as "Hindutva," which originated during the British colonial period in India, manifests itself in Indian politics today in the form of the Bharatiya Janata Party (B.J.P.). Its affiliates, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, V.H.P. consisting of Hindu priests and sadhus, and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, R. S.S., a paramilitary organization, form the core of this party. As the organized militant arm of Hindutva, the R.S.S. is compared to other religious fundamentalist organizations worldwide, based on characteristics provided by Martin Marty and R. Scott Appleby in the Fundamentalist Research Project at the University of Chicago.

The Politics Of Arthurian Legend In The Plantagenet Empire: A Study Of Literary And Historical Sources From The Time Of Henry Ii To Edward I, Laura J. Radiker
Masters Theses
This study looks at both medieval chronicles and romances--the primary sources of Arthurian legend--to seek mutual influences between the politics of the Plantagenet Empire and Arthurian legend. The authors of the works used in this study performed within the sphere of the Plantagenet Empire, during the time period with which this study concerns itself. Secondary sources provide background information, such as the historical, literary, and cultural milieu surrounding the primary works, archaeological and linguistic evidence, and current scholarly debate.
From the evaluation of the primary sources and their historical framework, several aspects of Arthurian legend emerge which have connections with …

Development In Drawings And Language Of Young Children With Hearing Impairments, Daniel Carey Nordenbrock
Development In Drawings And Language Of Young Children With Hearing Impairments, Daniel Carey Nordenbrock
Masters Theses
The use of free choice drawings and contingent questions as prompts to enhance oral language development in young children with moderate to profound hearing losses was the focus of this descriptive and experimental study. The effects of contingent queries (scaffolding) on drawing and oral language were measured using a single subject experimental design in which a staggered baseline was followed by treatment replicated across two sets of students at two levels of language abilities. An extensive coding system for dependent drawing and language variables was developed and utilized for analysis.
The major findings of this study were that the use …

The Effects Of Interactive Songs On Syllable Production In A Child With Agenesis Of The Corpus Callosum, Kelly D. Beens
Masters Theses
Agenesis of the corpus callosum is a disorder which has been the focus of clinical research on various tasks involving interhemispheric transfer of information. However, therapeutic intervention for individuals with this disorder has not been located in the literature by this researcher. Speech-language therapy for a five-year-old male incorporating interaction with songs was employed to activate various portions of the congenitally separated cerebral hemispheres and to encourage information transfer through non-traditional ways to facilitate syllable production.
The child received speech-language therapy for 15, 30-minute sessions. He was prompted to participate physically (with actions or manipulation of props) and verbally in …
Toward A Biocritical Sociology, John Neuhaus
Toward A Biocritical Sociology, John Neuhaus
Dissertations
This dissertation is a critical discourse with three prominent trends in contemporary sociology. It is a critique of Emile Durkheim's admonition that sociological analysis, by definition, requires the exclusion of biological and psychological data. It shows, in contrast, that the exclusion of biosocial data removes vast sources of information which are useful and necessary in any interpretation of human behavior. This work also demonstrates that a biosocial perspective facilitates the development of a transcultural theory of human needs, which, if utilized, would enable sociologists to clarify a number of unproductive disciplinary conflicts concerning the definition and extent of social problems. …
The Song Of Lies: A Collection Of Poems, James Scannell Mccormick
The Song Of Lies: A Collection Of Poems, James Scannell Mccormick
Dissertations
This creative dissertation is a book-length manuscript of poems. What holds up, what holds together, the collection is, fundamentally, a narrow examination of the interrelationship between the poetic speakers' physical and psychological landscapes, that is, how various psychological states (love, grief, fear) shape a speaker's perceptions of, and reactions to, the world. This psychological anatomizing and taxonomizing takes place in four stages, arranged as parts in the manuscript.
The first part, with its emphasis on the contrast between the "objective" (real or external) and the "subjective" (perceived or internal) worlds, establishes the speakers' essential inability to reconcile what they see …
Race And Language On A College Campus, William H. Dozier
Race And Language On A College Campus, William H. Dozier
Masters Theses
This research was used to measure the attitudes of students toward African American English at a predominantly European American University. It was hypothesized that significant differences would be found between the responses of the African American and European American students. Using a random telephone survey of the population, three (Language Legitimacy, Language Acceptance, and Cultural Value) of the four hypotheses were found to be significant. The fourth hypothesis (Employment Inhibition) was rejected indicating that both groups felt language was used as an employment stratification device. The data showed that although there were significant differences in the attitudes by race over …

Ethnic Sensitive Social Work Practice: The State Of The Art, Elfriede G. Schlesinger, Wynetta Devore
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The social work literature of the past ten years has paid increasing attention to the ideological, theoretical and practice issues related to ethnic sensitive practice. Major focus has been on the life styles, needs and oppression of people of color, with minimal attention paid to other ethnic groups. A literature focused on adapting prevailing practice modalities to work with diverse groups is beginning to emerge.

Ethnic Identity, Intergroup Relations And Welfare Policy In The Canadian Context: A Comparative Discourse Analysis, Adrienne S. Chambon, Donald F. Bellamy
Ethnic Identity, Intergroup Relations And Welfare Policy In The Canadian Context: A Comparative Discourse Analysis, Adrienne S. Chambon, Donald F. Bellamy
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
This paper illuminates the negotiation of group identities and intergroup relations in the Canadian context. It presents an empirical, comparative analysis of group claims around social assistance policy using discourse analysis. Lexical, semantic and narrative analyses of Aboriginal and multicultural documents show a complex organization of intergroup relations, with distinct and at times conflicting claims. In view of the tensions, responsive policy development requires that historical specificity, complexity, and even incompatibilities be taken into account.
